Pietro Cataldi was educated in Bologna although he does not seem to have attended the university there, rather he began teaching mathematics at the age of seventeen. He taught in Florence in the Academy of Design from 1569 until 1570 then he went to Perugia, in Umbria in central Italy. He taught mathematics both at the University of Perugia and also at the Academy of Design in Perugia until 1584. In 1584 Cataldi returned to Bologna were he taught mathematics and astronomy at the Studio di Bologna until his death. Cataldi wrote around 30 books on mathematics, and some on other topics. He wrote on arithmetic ( Practica aritmetica was written in four parts between 1606 and 1617), perfect numbers and algebra. He found square roots of numbers by use of an infinite series leading to an early investigation into continued fractions . This work on continued fractions appears in Trattato del modo brevissimo di trovar la radice quadra delli numeri (1613). His methods make precise some ideas which went back to

3. Nationality : Birth: Italy; Career: Italy; Death: Italy
4. Education: Religious Orders; D.D. He attended the Jesuit college in Parma. Heilbron says Ferrara. I did not find any mention of university study. He clearly received the equivalent of a B.A. within the order and as a full Jesuit he would have had a theological degree.
5. Religion: Catholic. He was a Jesuit, having entered as a novice in 1602.
6. Scientific Disciplines: Magnetism; Natural Philosophy; Elc; Subordinate Disciplines: Mechanics. Cabeo is remembered partly because he was acquainted with Giovanni Battista Baliani, who experimented with falling weights, and wrote about Baliani's experiments. His interpretation that two different weights fall in the same length of time without regard to the medium became the indirect cause of other experiments conducted by Vincenzo Renieri. He experimented with pendulums. He published two major works, Philosophia magnetica (1629) and In quatuor libros meteorologicorum Aristotelis commentaria (1646), an anti-aristotelian work.

Cataldi began teaching mathematics in 1567 at the age of seventeen. I assume that there had not been any university degree by that time and probably no university study. Note that he insisted on teaching in Italian.
When he return to Bologna in 1584, he took doctorates (sic) in both medicine and philosophy that same year. To say the least, this is perplexing. (As I later found out, this was the standard Italian practice.) There is no trace of the medical degree either in his publications or in what is known of his life.
I assume, as always in such cases, a B.A. or its equivalent.

7. The Largest Known Prime By Year: A Brief History

The Largest Known Prime by Year
A Brief History
Chris Caldwell The largest known prime today is the 4,053,946 digit Mersenne prime , but how big have the "largest known primes" been historically? When might we see the first billion digit bevaprime ? And historically, how have these primes been found? We will briefly discuss each of these questions below.

Many early writers felt (incorrectly) that if p was prime, then so was M p p -1. These numbers, now called the Mersenne Numbers , were the focus of most of the early searches for large primes. The early history of these numbers is strewn with many false claims of primality, even by such notables as Mersenne, Leibniz, and Euler. So we give credit to our first record holder with some doubt: by 1588 Pietro Cataldi had correctly verified that 2 -1 = 131071 and 2 -1 = 524287 are both prime.

Continued fractions proved to be of profound importance in number theory. In his Arithmetica infinitorum (1655), Wallis gave an infinite product expansion for 4/p, and this was cleverly transformed by Brouncker into a continued fraction formula for the same quantity. A century later this was later used by Lambert to prove that p is an irrational number. The theory was further developed by Euler and Lagrange; the latter showed that any positive root of any polynomial equation can be expressed as a continued fraction.
