William Burnside was of Scottish ancestry on his father's side. He graduated from Pembroke College Cambridge in 1875 as second wrangler , bracketed with George Chrystal . Burnside was considered to have the most elegant mathematical style. He was then awarded a fellowship at Pembroke which he held from 1875 to 1886. Among his teachers at Cambridge were Stokes Adams and Maxwell in Applied Mathematics and Cayley in Pure Mathematics. They were to influence greatly the direction that Burnside's research was to take. His first paper in 1883 considered elliptic functions but after 1885, the year he was appointed professor of mathematics at the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, his work turned to hydrodynamics. Much of Burnside's work on hydrodynamics involved the use of complex variable and in papers of 1891 and 1892 he considered the group of linear fractional transformations of a complex variable. His work quickly turned to the study of groups and from 1894 onwards he was to be occupied almost entirely with the study of group theory.

GOOD HOPE COMMUNITY Prepared by Harriet Thrash
Located in the most beautiful part of Harrison County along the West Fork River and tributaries about half way between Clarksburg and Weston is the county community known as Good Hope. The state road from Pittsburgh to Charleston now under construction, passes directly through this community, and other roads leading into this, viz: Twolick and Isaacs Creek, are to be hard surfaced in the near future. Sixty-four families comprise the community of Good Hope with a population of 270, all American born, no foreign blood of any kind. Most of the families are descendants of the pioneers who settled in this community from 125 to 150 years ago. The most prominent of these families who were among the first settlers are the Washburns, Posts, Laws, McConkeys, Cheuvronts, Burnsides, Carders, Hinkles, Somervilles, Ramages, Tinglers, Yerkeys and Browns. The land in this community lays well and is highly cultivated. Some of the best farming land in Harrison County is in this vicinity and the farmers take great pride not only in cultivating their farms but in raising the best cattle, hogs, chickens, etc., some of which have carried off premiums at the county fairs. The upland is fine for grazing and there is no unsightly filth decorating the hills as can be seen in some localities. The community is blessed with natural resources; gas on every farm, oil, coal, timber, sand, clay and building stone. Bethel Church The present church here is the third Bethel. The first one was known as "Old Bethel" but at this time the date of its foundation is not definitely known. It was located on the Somerville farm about one mile below Good Hope. There is a large grave yard there with tombstones marking many a grave. Bethel M. E. Church has more than one hundred members.

William Burnside was one of the three most important algebraists who were involved in the transformation of group theory from its nineteenth-century origins to a deep twentieth-century subject. Building on work of earlier mathematicians, they were able to develop sophisticated tools for solving difficult problems. All of Burnside's papers are reproduced here, organized chronologically and with a detailed bibliography. Walter Feit has contributed a foreword, and a collection of introductory essays are included to provide a commentary on Burnside's work and set it in perspective along with a modern biography that draws on archive material. Subject: William Burnside Author: A.Mann@greenwich.ac.uk Organization: the University of Greenwich Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 11:36:12 GMT (With apologies for any cross-posting) With Peter Neumann and Julia Tompson, I am editing the collected papers of William Burnside (the group theorist). We are interested in any photographs of Burnside: we've got a number through the Royal Society, London Mathematical Society, Royal Naval College, National Protrait Gallery and Pembroke College, Cambridge (and I know of one at the Institut Mittag-Leffler) but does anyone know of any others? We'd be particularly interested in anything of Burnside as a young man, as the ones we have all show him later in life. http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/B/Burnside/1.htm
    Burnside, William
English mathematician who made advances in automorphic functions, group theory, and the theory of probability.
Burnside was born in London and educated at Cambridge, where he became a lecturer. In 1885 he left Cambridge to take up the chair of mathematics at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London; he retired 1919.
Burnside's study of elliptic functions led him, over the years, to study the functions of real variables and the theory of functions in general. One of his most influential papers, written 1892, was a development of some work by French mathematician on automorphic functions.
His study of automorphic functions in turn brought him to the field of group theory, particularly the theory of the discontinuous group of finite order. In 1897 he published the first book on group theory to appear in English; the revised edition 1911 is considered a standard work. A nearly completed manuscript on probability theory was published after his death.
