Looking Out, Looking In: the 'Other' in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education
JANICE MONK, University of Arizona, Tucson, USA ABSTRACT
The Journal of Geography in Higher Education has a vision of being inclusive. This paper examines what the journal, throughout its history, has published on teaching and learning in relation to people and places referred to in contemporary scholarship as the 'Other'. It addresses themes of gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, and the 'Third World', noting especially the surprising paucity of material on the latter. In particular, the article explores ways in which teaching addresses aspects of students' values and attitudes, and the importance of linking knowledge, emotion, experiential learning and action. KEYWORDS
The ‘Other’, values, attitudes, experiential learning.

    Journal : Celia Edwards (London)
I first heard about the Magistrate Shadowing Scheme while reading an article published in the Times newspaper in July last year (2001). I rang the Times straight away to find out more information about this innovative and powerful project. I was referred to the Operation Black Vote (OBV) website. I was fascinated by OBV's projects which aimed to assure a wide participation of ethnic minority groups in both the political and legal processes. I decided to apply for the Shadowing Scheme, and was later delighted to be chosen to be part of the London scheme alongside seven other shadowers. We had a press launch in November 2001, and this was a wonderful experience. I had a chance to meet not only the other shadowers, but also leading public figures such as Mr Harry Mawdsley, the Chairman of the Council, Magistrate Association, and Baroness Patricia Scotland. Baroness Scotland's speech was very encouraging and enlightening. The next step to follow was the initial contact with my mentor magistrates at South Western Magistrate Court.

    THE WEIRS IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY
The WEIRs listed below arrived in Northumberland County, Ontario from Ireland between about 1829 and 1837. Census and church records indicate that they were Protestant Irish. My assumption is that they were all related, but more research is required to be certain. The notes following the table below outline the connections I have found so far. If you are descended from any of these lines, please contact me. I have lots of information to share. Maybe we can untangle this mystery together.
