ON THE TERM DARSANA IN JAINISM
K.P. SINHA In Jainism, the term darsana is used in three remarkable cases, namely, darsana-upayoga, kevala-darsana or ananta-darsana and samyak-darsana. In the first two cases, the term darsana carries more or less the same meaning, namely, a general grasping of the object, which clearly shows that it is a cognitive fact. The difference between the two is simply this that, in the case of darsana- upayoga, cognition is limited, while in the case of darsana-upayoga, cognition is limited, while in the case of kevala-darsana, it is unlimited. In the case of samayak-darsana, however, the term darsana is explained as bearing a different meaning, i.e. sraddhana. The term sraddhana in its turn is explained differently by different commentators and writers as will be found in our following discourse. Now, the problems before us are these: First, why has the same term darsana been used in the case of samyak-darsana to give a meaning different from that in the other two cases? Secondly, does the meaning of the term darsana used in samyak-darsana have got any relation with that of the same term in the other two cases? To solve the problems, let us discuss in detail the meanings of darsana-upayoga, kevala-darsana and samyak-darsana, with special attention to the last one, i.e. samyak-darsana.

Preface Kulapati's Preface The Author ... Somanatha TRYAMBAKESHVAR - TRYAMBAK The rituals had hardly ended when the numerous contestants started returning one after the other. The gods were the first to arrive with the kings and the sages closely following. When all had reassembled Brahmadeva announced that the sage Gautama had won the race and along with it the much coveted hand of the fair lady. He also disclosed that the marriage had already taken place and invited everybody to bless the newly weds. The disappointment and fury of the gods new no limits. They had all along led the runners and Gautama was never seen anywhere near them and how could he be the winner? Nor had the kings seen him around them. The sages swore that many of them had marked Gautama dropping out of the race. This created a great furore and the leaders went to Brahma to ask for an explanation. The good old man had great difficulty in convincing thedisgruntled crowd that Gautama was really the one to win the competition. However, most of them thought that it was a dirt), trick and there was good deal of ill-will now about the sage. The sage asked Brahma for a home that would be safe. The latter told him that Shiva was then residing on the Brahmagiri and the vicinity of the Lord would afford him a nice and comfortable home. Gautama and his wife then proceeded towards Brahmagiri and erected a small ashram on a suitable spot. And he lived happily thereafter-that should have been the end of the story.

Home SATYAVAN AND SAVITRI Once upon a time there ruled over the Madva people a great king called Asvapati or lord of horses. His subjects loved him, his fame was great and his riches immense. But he was not wholly happy, because he had no children. As he grew older his longing for children increased. And he fervently worshipped Brahmadeva's Queen, the goddess Savitry, and became an anchorite that he might win her favour. For eighteen years he worshipped her, until at last he won her favour and she vouchsafed him a vision. Out of a sacrificial fire which he had built up for her, she rose in all her splendour and glory. "O King Asvapati," she said, "O Lord of Horses, for eighteen years I have watched you piety and your pure life. I have vouchsafed you this vision in order that you may ask me a boon. Ask me a boon, therefore, and whatever it is, unless it is something evil, I shall willingly great it to you." "Great Goddess," said King Asvapati, "I long for children. I practised austerities and worshipped at you shrine that you might grant me them. If therefore you are pleased with me, graciously grant me this boon." "O King," said Savitry, "I knew your desires before you told them to me. Before I left Brahmagiri I entreated the Lord Brahmadeva on your behalf. He has a graciously listened to my entreaties and has promised me that soon a beautiful daughter shall be born to you. This is the Lord Brahmadeva's commands. But do not thank him for he has no need of a mortal's thanks." "So be it," said the king reverently and with bowed head. "When he again lifted his eyes Savitri had vanished.

THF WAY FOR REVIVAL FOREWORD P Parameshwaran - ANTIQUITY OF BHARATEEYA WOMANHOOD THE BHARATEEYA IDEAL OF WOMANHOOD THE POSITION AND CONTRIBUTION OF WOMEN-VEDIC AGE The position of women in the society is the first and foremost index of its advancement. If this index is applied, then the Bharateeya Samaj (Indian society), in the Vedic age was the most advanced and civilised society in the world. In the Vedic age, women occupied a respectable place. We find many women referred to with great admiration and respect in the context of domestic affairs, social organisations, education, warfare, religious debates etc. The Satapatha Brahmana says: "woman as mother is the best and foremost preceptor of children and she is not merely an object of pleasure but a colleague in the spiritual life of man".

Jian, China This hunting scene is well known as a vibrant expression of the brave, energetic spirit of the Goguryeo people. Mounted hunters, some with headgear decorated with feathers and others with black caps, chase tigers and with bows and arrows. The poses are similar to those found in the stone engravings of Han China and in the tomb murals of Liaoning province. However, this scene is free of Chinese conventions and appears to have provided the basis for the stylized rendering of mountains and trees found in later Korean landscapes.e. Our Guru is the Great Mother. All Her Shakti and Yogini aspects are available for Her children. By reading The Kavach of The Devi, we mobilise these powers to purify and enlighten our Koshas (our mental, emotional and physical bodies). Thus by the Power of the Gurumata The Atma becomes The Guru of the body. While reading the Kavach of The Devi one should put one's attention on the aspect or the part of the body which is protected. One may also, while reading, pause between the Names and silently take the corresponding mantra, for example: Om Twameva Sakshat, Shri Chandi Namoh Namah The Kavach should be read aloud. It washes away the 'catches' and bathes the children in Divine Vibrations. May the wisdom and compassion of our Satguru flow through us and reach the four quarters of the earth. JAY SHRI MATAJI!
