WHERE'S BUFFALO BILL CODY NOW THAT WE NEED HIM?
LAWRENCE - The 1,700 dime novels written about Buffalo Bill Cody may be more crucial to the nation's optimistic spirit than anyone realizes. Those novels, produced from 1870 to 1930, reinforced values already present in the nation, says Richard W. Clement, KU associate special collections librarian at the University of Kansas. "You have Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, George Marshall - a whole set of figures who would have a terrific impact on the world and who hold an optimistic, progressive view of what the nation can do," Clement said. "I would argue that much of this view came through the medium of these dime novels." Clement recently spent time at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo. He examined the Cody novels with a travel grant from KU's Hall Center for the Humanities. And in late June, he delivered a paper at the Huntington Library, San Marino, Calif., about Cody, Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone as they are portrayed in frontier publications. Clement is under contract with Fulcrum, a trade publisher, and the Library of Congress to produce a work titled "Books on the American Frontier."

Judge throws out $258,000 bad check charge against Erpenbeck
    By Bob Driehaus
    Post staff reporter
Boone District Judge Michael Collins threw out the charge, which carries a maximum five-year sentence, on Monday, ruling that state criminal law on bad checks made an exception for postdated checks. The ruling means the charge was dismissed, and the $50,000 cash bond that Erpenbeck posted in May to remain free will be refunded. Bill Engel, assistant Boone County attorney, said the case could be revived if it is brought before the Boone County grand jury by one of three parties: the victimized contractor, Morris Heating and Cooling Co. of Boone County; Commonwealth Attorney Linda Tally Smith; or Boone County Detective Steve Hill.

Christina Adams, Age 16 - Vapor Exchange/Pressure Control Wheelchair Seat
Christina's invention is designed to simultaneously control pressure and moisture, the two biggest factors leading to pressure sores in wheelchair users. It incorporates adjustable interlacing straps of material that allows free flow of air for cooler, dryer and more comfortable experience for the user. The invention has earned two U.S. patents. Lindsey Clement - Age 12 - The Gumball Machine
A real problem for residents of the southern United States is cleaning up the gumballs dropped by the myriad sweet gum trees that grow in the region. A sweet gumball is a walnut-sized seed pod covered with spiny thorns. These gumballs fall throughout the autumn and winter months and are a nuisance to anyone who has a sweet gum tree. Lindsey's invention is constructed of PVC pipe and resembles a small lawnmower. The user simply pushes it along, and any gumballs in its path are automatically picked up and dropped into the attached gumball catcher.

-The Boone family has been passing down the family tradition of blacksmithing for at least twelve generations. Working for almost 12 years in his Colorado smithy, Mike uses his inherited talent and natural ingenuity to create original forms of ornamental and functional art. His designs, a combination of efforts with his wife Robin, break through the conventional barriers to transform his projects into unique sculptural statements. The resulting effect expresses harmony of design and function.

By Aaron Reincheld When photojournalism graduate student Regina Boone came to Ohio University in the fall of 2001, something didn't feel right. It wasn't that she was homesick. Boone, who was then 32, had spent three years teaching in Japan and backpacking alone across Asia, Africa and Europe. But the Richmond, Va., native did feel isolated. Having completed her undergraduate degree at a historically black college in Atlanta, Boone, herself African American, experienced culture shock in spite of the rich history surrounding the Athens region including the Underground Railroad. "Initially I was totally shocked," Boone says. "I was seeing very few blacks or people of color outside of campus. I wanted to find where blacks were in the greater community and what they were doing." So Boone set out on a mission: Find African Americans beyond the University's gates. One day, she traveled to Gallipolis for a celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation, the document signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 that ended slavery. Many African Americans from Gallipolis and surrounding regions attended the event.
