NEWS RELEASE
International Team Shows that Primes Can Be Found in Surprising Places
For more information, contact: Andrew Granville, Department of Mathematics, University of Georgia, phone 706-542-2560, email andrew@math.uga.edu December 5, 1997 Providence, RI-Prime numbers are the most basic objects in mathematics. They also are among the most mysterious, for after centuries of study, the structure of the set of prime numbers is still not well understood. Describing the distribution of primes is at the heart of much mathematics and has many important applications to such areas as cryptography. To study primes, researchers have developed what might be termed mathematical ``lenses'' that allow them to bring into focus certain aspects of prime numbers. Recently two mathematicians-John Friedlander of the University of Toronto and Henryk Iwaniec of Rutgers University in New Jersey-astounded the mathematical world by announcing that they had developed a new, more refined lens for the prime numbers. Their work was particularly surprising because it solved an important mathematics problem on which no progress had been made for the past one hundred years. The significance of the work of Friedlander and Iwaniec can be seen in its historical context. It was Euclid, in ancient Greece, who first showed that there are an infinity of primes among the integers. Much later, in 1837, Gustave Lejeune Dirichlet showed that there are infinitely many primes among the numbers a, a+d, a+2d, a+3d, ... Here a and d must have no common divisors greater than 1.

For an exhaustive story of soap bubbles in mathematics, in art, in chemistry, in architecture and in biology, refer to the volume "Bolle di sapone: un viaggio tra matematica, arte e fantasia" (Soap bubbles: a journey into mathematics, art and fantasy). Visual Mathematics. The Endless Ribbon, that Moebius Band, enormous and made of stone, granite, was a real revelation. Its shape, its physical nature, tridimensionally real, making it live in space. A mathematical form, alive. This was the idea that was missing: mathematics, mathematicians in all the historical periods and in all the civilisations have created shapes, forms, relationships. Some of these shapes and relationships are really visual, they can be made visible. The idea for the great success of the use of computer graphics in some sectors of mathematics. In these same years the mathematician Thomas Banchoff was making his first short films in animation of mathematical surfaces but at that time I was not aware of his work. - to make a film was (and is) very expensive; one thing was very clear to me. I did not intend to make an amateur's film. I wanted to make a real professional movie, of high quality, and all the technicians involved had to be well qualified.

A Panorama of Number Theory or The View from Baker's Garden
Edited by Gisbert Wustholz
In stock Alan Baker’s 60th birthday in August 1999 offered an ideal opportunity to organize a conference at ETH Zurich with the goal of presenting the state of the art in number theory and geometry. Many of the leaders in the subject were brought together to present an account of research in the last century as well as speculations for possible further research. The papers in this volume cover a broad spectrum of number theory including geometric, algebrao-geometric and analytic aspects. This volume will appeal to number theorists, algebraic geometers, and geometers with a number-theoretic background. However, it will also be valuable for mathematicians (in particular research students) who would like to be informed of the state of number theory at the start of the 21st century and in possible developments for the future.
