Biography: Paul Langerhans’s father (1820-1909), for whom he was named, was a well-known physician and President of the Berlin City Council. He had two younger stepbrothers who were also physicians. One of them, Robert (1859-1904), was an assistant to Rudolf Virchow and later became professor of pathology. Langerhans attended the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster in Berlin and graduated at the age of sixteen. From 1865 to 1866 he studied medicine at the University of Jena, where he was strongly influenced by Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) and Karl Gegenbaur (1826-1903). He continued his medical studies in Berlin under Heinrich Adolf von Bardeleben (1819-1895), Emil du Bois-Reymond (1818-1896), Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902), Julius Cohnheim (1839-1884), and Friedrich Theodor von Frerichs (1819-1885). In un articolo del 1829 sul "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik", trattando il problema della rappresentazione delle funzioni in serie di Fourier, Dirichlet solleva il problema del caso di funzioni con un numero infinito di discontinuità, portando anche l'esempio della funzione che porta il suo nome. Nel 1854 Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866) scrive la tesi di abilitazione per ottenere la libera docenza intitolata Über die Darstellbarkeit einer Funktion durch eine trigonometrische Reihe , ossia "sulla rappresentabilità di una funzione mediante una serie trigonometrica", che resta sconosciuta fino al 1867 quando è pubblicata a cura di Dedekind. door Erik Stekelenburg Wat kunnen architecten met de samplepraktijk uit de muziek-, design en internetbranche? Deze vraag stond centraal op het symposium 'public_domain' dat de BNA woensdag 8 december na haar algemene ledenvergadering in het Minnaert gebouw te Utrecht organiseerde. Aan de orde kwamen sampling als ontwerpmentaliteit, als ontwerpproces en als eigenschap van een ontwerp in de gebruiksfase. Het symposium werd geopend met een optreden van DJ Kid Sundance. Het zal voor het eerst in het bestaan van de BNA zijn geweest dat tijdens de opening van een door haar georganiseerd symposium de woorden 'fuck', 'shit' en 'motherfucker' werden aangestipt. In snel tempo wisselden de platen, en op het projectiescherm de platenhoezen, elkaar af. Het optreden had als titel 'samplen, scratchen en loopen'. De beats beukten soms even lekker op de architecten in. Het was enigszins verwarrend; een BNA-symposium dat start met een sfeer die is gesampled uit de betere disco. Na de opening sprak Ole Bouman over 'Mixen en Muteren; plundering of weldaad?'. Hij ziet sampling als een reactie op de ideologie van het nieuwe, verklaarde de populariteit van sampling uit het gemak waarmee het kan en uit de verschuiving van de aandacht voor producten naar de afzet ervan, naar consumeerbare verleidelijkheid. De uitvoerbaarheid is, door kliksystemen, cataloguscultuur en bouwdeelbibliotheken, in afnemende mate een probleem; 'waanzin wordt uitvoerbaar'. Sampling gaat volgens hem verder dan knippen en plakken, namelijk om omarming van het toeval als leidend beginsel. De aanvaarding van het toeval biedt oneindige mogelijkheden, maar vereist volgens Ole Bouman wel het opgeven van individueel auteurschap omdat anders het toeval nooit serieus wordt genomen. Samplen is het combineren van, tot datapakketjes herleidde, bestaande elementen tot nieuwe vormen. Bij sampling gaat het niet om met de vorm iets anders te willen betekenen dan de vorm zelf, de nieuwe vorm moet niet meer doen terugdenken aan de onderdelen. Voor het merendeel van de voorbeelden uit de andere bijdragen gaat dat echter niet op. Deze voorbeelden ontlenen hun charme ook aan verwijzing naar de oorspronkelijke betekenis of context.
