Danish physicist. His theoretical work produced a new model of atomic structure, now called the Bohr model, and helped establish the validity of quantum theory. He also explained the process of nuclear fission. Nobel Prize for Physics 1922.
Bohr's first model of the atom was developed working with Ernest Rutherford at Manchester, UK. He was director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen from 1920. During World War II he took part in work on the atomic bomb in the USA. In 1952 he helped to set up CERN, the European nuclear research organization in Geneva. He proposed the doctrine of complementarity: that a fundamental particle is neither a wave nor a particle, because these are complementary modes of description.
Bohr was born and educated in Copenhagen. In 1911 he went to the UK to study at the Cambridge atomic-research laboratory under J J Thomson, but moved 1912 to Manchester to work with New Zealand physicist Rutherford. Bohr developed models of the atom in which electrons are disposed in rings around the nucleus, a first step towards an explanation of atomic structure.
In 1913 Bohr developed his theory of atomic structure by applying quantum theory to the observations of radiation emitted by atoms. The authorities in Denmark made him a professor 1916 and then built the Institute of Theoretical Physics for him. Leading physicists from all over the world developed Bohr's work there, resulting in the theories of quantum and wave mechanics that more fully explain the behaviour of electrons within atoms. Bohr's atomic theory was validated 1922 by the discovery of an element he had predicted, which was given the name hafnium.

On his mother's side, he was of jewish descent. Bohr had an older sister, Jenny, and a brother Harald, who became a famous mathematician. In 1911, Bohr finished his doctoral work on the electron theory of metals. He did postdoctoral studies in 1912 and 1913 in England, first in Cambridge under Thomson (who discovered the electron), then in Manchester, under Rutherford. Rutherford had just discovered the atomic nucleus. The young Bohr proved able to unify the new discoveries into a theory, that permitted prediction of atomic spectra for atoms with one electron. The archetypical representation of the atom, also present as an icon on this page, is derived from Bohr's theory. Bohr published his insights in 1913. A most important aspect of his theory was the introduction of Planck's constant in atomic theory. Moreover, his theory introduced a profound break with classical mechanics. The discontinuous 'quantum jump' is a basic part of the theory. In 1922, Bohr received the Nobel prize 'for his investigations of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them'. In that same year, he met the young physicists Heisenberg and Pauli. Bohr, Heisenberg and Pauli were going to constitute the kernel of the Copenhagen School in physics.

Niels Bohr stammte aus einer Familie von Wissenschaftlern: Sein Vater Christian Bohr war Physiologe, sein Bruder Harald Bohr Mathematiker. Bereits seiner ersten Forschungsarbeit (einer Präzisionsmessung der Oberflächenspannung des Wassers) wurde im Jahre 1906 eine Goldmedaille der Königlich Dänischen Akademie der Wissenschaften verliehen. Bohr wurde 1911 mit einer Arbeit über die Theorie der Metallelektronen promoviert. Er zeigte darin, daß die magenetischen Eigenschaften der Metalle mit den Vorstellungen der klassischen Physik nicht verstanden werden können. Er ging im Oktober desselben Jahres nach England, zuerst zu Joseph John Thomson, bald aber (im März 1912) nach Manchester zu Ernest Rutherford, mit dem ihn bald eine tiefgehende Freundschaft verband ...
