Salomon Bochner studied at the University of Warsaw. His Ph.D. from the University of Berlin in 1921 was on orthogonal systems of complex analytic functions. It was supervised by Schmidt Bochner worked with Harald Bohr Hardy and Littlewood in Copenhagen, Oxford and Cambridge respectively. Much of this work was on the zeta function Bochner lectured in Munich from 1924 to 1933 and developed major results in harmonic analysis . His work developed into the theory of distributions. Driven out of Germany in 1933 he accepted a position at Princeton where he remained until he retired. He worked at this time on summation of Fourier series and was considered as one of the greatest experts on Fourier analysis. Bochner worked jointly with von Neumann for a while. His major books include Harmonic Analysis and the Theory of Probability (1955). In the 1960s he worked on the history and philosophy of mathematics.

The word "mathematics" is a Greek word and, by origin, it means "something that has been learned or understood," or perhaps "acquired knowledge," or perhaps even, somewhat against grammar, "acquirable knowledge," that is, "learnable knowledge," that is, "knowledge acquirable by learning."

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Salomon Chaim Bochner, a mathematician, historian, and teacher of international fame, was born on 20 August 1899 in the small town of Podgorzu, Austria-Hungary, now in Poland. His early schooling included grammar school and attendance at the Academia w Krakowie. Reputedly, he had already mastered the calculus by age 13, and completed his first original research in his fifteenth year. In 1915 he moved to Berlin to attend the Konigstadtisch Oberrealschule until he was conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian army in May 1917. In the army Bochner received medical training at a military school near Vienna, and eventually obtained the rank of corporal in the medical corps. He was stationed at Feldpost # 3, a military hospital, until November of 1918. Soon thereafter he matriculated at the University of Berlin where he studied mathematics for three years. He received the D.Phil. on 8 April 1921, his examiners being Max Planck, Ehrhardt Schmidt, Issai Schur and Alois Riehl.

Collected Papers of Salomon Bochner
Edited by: Robert C. Gunning
"To reminisce about the various parts of mathematics that bear Bochner's name is to be struck by their diversity and importance ... We owe Gunning a debt for giving us these collected works." Mathematical Reviews "Most mathematicians will find work in these volumes which they will appreciate and admire. These books should be in every serious research library." Description During his long and productive career, Salomon Bochner worked in a variety of different areas of mathematics. These volumes bring together his collected papers, illustrating the range and depth of his mathematical interests. The papers are grouped into eleven different categories: almost periodic functions, Fourier analysis, real analysis (topics in real analysis that do not fit into the first two categories), complex analysis (general and special analytic functions of one complex variable), several complex variables, differential geometry, Lie groups, differential equations (both ordinary and partial), probability, history, and miscellaneous (including a few papers that did not fit naturally elsewhere and a few obituary articles).

    http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~scientia/bochner
    Salomon Bochner, 20 August 1899-2May 1982
Salomon Bochner's publishing career in the history of science began in 1962 with an article entitled "The Role of Mathematics in the Rise of Mechanics," in American Scientist . He was nearing the end of an extraordinarily productive career as a mathematician, having to his credit at that point almost two hundred papers and a number of books on various aspects of mathematical analysis. Four years later Princeton University Press published his main contribution to the history of science, The Role of Mathematics in the Rise of Science , a collection of essays and biographical sketches. Thereafter Bochner went on to publish Eclosion and Synthesis: Perspectives on the History of Knowledge (1969) and about a score of articles on the history of science. Bochner was born in Krakow (then Austria-Hungary, now Poland) in 1899. After receiving his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Berlin in 1921, he worked with Harald Bohr in Copenhagen, G. H. Hardy in Oxford, and J. E. Littlewood in Cambridge from 1924 to 1926. In 1926 he was appointed lecturer at the University of Munich. In 1933 he came to the United States and spent the next thirty-five years at Princeton University, where from 1951 until his retirement he was Henry Burchard Fine Professor of Mathematics. In 1968 Bochner became Edgar O'Dell Lovett Professor of Mathematics at Rice University and served for seven years as the chairman of the Mathematics Department. He remained active in departmental affairs until his death in 1982. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and served as vice-president of the American Mathematical Society, which awarded him the Leroy P. Steele Prize in 1979 for the cumulative effect of his researches.

Abstract : From the Enlightenment onward, the notion that the evolution of Companion Continuing Studies Course (started February 19 2002-2003 Scientia Program Evolutionary Biology as Paradigm Science In his 1859 book "The Origin of Species," Charles Darwin amassed vast evidence for the thesis of evolutionary change in the forms of life. Synthesizing virtually all the relevant biological knowledge of his time, he went on to offer natural selection as the most important mechanism for the adaptive improvement of species. Darwin thereby elevated Biology to a legitimate science, created the fields of ecology and ethology, made significant contributions to geology and psychology, and caused a rethinking of Victorian philosophy and religion. The echoes of Darwin's great revolution continue to resonant in the 21st century. In this series of lectures, Scientia presents experts on evolution from the biological and social sciences as well as from the humanities. Our speakers will invite us to follow the threads of evolutionary biology into the scientific and cultural fabric of contemporary society. Our goal is to illuminate the ways in which the theory of evolution has affected our vision of ourselves and of our place in the world.
