Vilhelm Bjerknes is considered by many to be one of the founders of modern meteorology and weather forecasting. Born on March 14, 1862, in the Norwegian town of Christiania, Bjerknes was destined for a career in science. As a young boy, Bjerknes assisted his father, Carl Bjerknes (a professor of mathematics at the University of Christiania), in carrying out experiments to verify the theoretical predictions that resulted from his father's hydrodynamic research. He continued this collaboration during his undergraduate studies at the University of Kristiania in 1880 (the city was renamed Kristiania in 1877). After studying mathematics and physics, Bjerknes received his Master's Degree from Kristiania in 1888. During this time, he decided to cut all collaborative ties with his father, as he showed an increasing tendency toward professional isolation and a fear of publishing the results of his research. Young Vilhelm believed that continuing work with his father would be detrimental to his career, a tough decision for a son who was devoted to his father. Soon after graduation, Bjerknes was awarded a state scholarship that enabled him to continue his studies abroad. Arriving in Paris in 1889, he attended lectures on electrodynamics given by Jules Henri Poincare. Then, in 1890, he moved to Bonn, Germany, and became an assistant to, and eventually a scientific collaborator with, the German physicist Heinrich Hertz. Together, Hertz and Bjerknes conducted a comprehensive study of electrical resonance (an effect in which the resistance to the flow of an electrical current becomes very small over a narrow frequency range) that was influential in the development of radio. In 1892, Bjerknes returned to Norway and completed his doctoral thesis on the work that he did in Bonn.

Vilhelm Firman Koren BJERKNES (1862 - 1951) Bjerknes was born in Oslo in 1862, the son of a professor who specialised in hydrodynamics. He is best known as the founder and inspirer of the Bergen school of frontal meteorology, but before that period he had already made a number of important original contributions, including the circulation theorems, the construction of contour charts of isobaric surfaces, and the introduction of absolute units of pressure. At the age of 20 he had already published original papers. Throughout his working life he made many contributions to pure hydrodynamics in addition to his work in meteorology. In 1893, the year of his marriage, he received a professorship at Stockholm, and there he developed his circulation theorems. He was not at first interested in geophysics, but his ideas found a receptive audience in the atmospheric and oceanographic communities. He first considered the solenoids formed by the isobaric-isosteric surfaces, which become significant when the horizontal temperature gradient is large, in relation to such problems as the vertical circulation of sea-breezes. Some years afterwards he brought in the earth's rotation. An important proposition included in these theorems is that when the area of a quasi-horizontal slab of air contracts, the circulation round its periphery is changed by the addition of cyclonic rotation, with the reverse effect when the area expands. In co-operation with Sandstrom he proposed the millibar as the best unit of pressure and afterwards pressed for its general adoption. In 1907 he went to Oslo and some years later published a book on

http://www.copernicus.org/EGS/egs_info/bjerknes.htm
European Geophysical Society Vilhelm Bjerknes The Section on Oceans and Atmosphere has established a new medal for distinguished research in atmospheric sciences. The medal is named after Vilhelm Bjerknes (1862-1951), one of the leading atmospheric scientists of the first half of this century. In the following there is a summary provided by Arnt Eliassen, Honorary Member of the EGS:
In a programmatic paper from 1904 he proposed the procedure Which is now called numerical weather prediction. He advocated that weather prognosis should be considered as an initial value problem of mathematical physics, and carried out by integrating the governing equations forward in time, starting from the observed atmospheric state.
The problems of analysis were further studied during Bjerknes's stay in Oslo and Leipzig. In 1917 Bjerknes settled in Bergen with two research assistants, his son Jack and Jack's fellow student Halvor Solberg; they were later joined by the Swedish meteorologist Tor Bergeron. This team put forward the polar front theory of cyclones, which has for 75 years served as an effective tool in weather analysis and forecasting.
Vilhelm Bjerknes had a rare ability to attract and inspire gifted students. He promoted progress in his field not only through his own work, but also by recruiting into geophysics a considerable number of students who later became prominent meteorologists or oceanographers. He was also efficient in making his and his co-worker's achievements known, not only to the scientific community, but to politicians and the public as well.

Vilhelm Bjerknes was a son of Carl Bjerknes and Aletta Koren. Vilhelm began this work with his father when he was still quite a young boy and he continued the collaboration after he began his undergraduate studies at the University of Kristiania in 1880. We should note that the different spelling of Christiania or Kristiania is not an error. The city was named Christiania when Vilhelm was born, became Kristiania in 1877, then was renamed Oslo in 1925. Throughout Vilhelm Bjerknes's life he was associated with this city with three different names and all three names appear in this biography. Carl Bjerknes 's father was Abraham Isaksen Bjerknes and his mother was Elen Birgitte Holmen. His parents both came from poor farming backgrounds, and Carl's father was a veterinary surgeon. When Carl was twelve years old, his father died and Carl's mother was left to bring up their three children with very little income. In 1844 Bjerknes studied entered the University of Christiania (now Oslo), where he studied mining. He was awarded a degree in mining engineering in 1848 and for the next four years he worked at the Kongsberg silver mines. Silver was mined at Kongsberg, in southeastern Norway, from the early 17th century until the mid-20th century. The oldest school of mines in the world, founded 1757, was in the town and Bjerknes worked there from 1848 until 1852. Dirichlet In 1859 Bjerknes married Aletta Koren whose father was a minister in the church. Their son

http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/B/Bjerknes/1.htm
Bjerknes, Vilhelm Firman Koren
Norwegian scientist whose theory of polar fronts formed the basis of all modern weather forecasting and meteorological studies. He also developed hydrodynamic models of the oceans and the atmosphere and showed how weather prediction could be carried out on a statistical basis, dependent on the use of mathematical models.
Bjerknes was professor at Stockholm, Sweden, and Leipzig, Germany, before returning to Norway and founding the Bergen Geophysical Institute 1917.
During World War I, Bjerknes instituted a network of weather stations throughout Norway; coordination of the findings from such stations led him and his co-workers to the theory of polar fronts, based on the discovery that the atmosphere is made up of discrete air masses displaying dissimilar features.
He coined the word 'front' to denote the boundary between such air masses.

Bjerknes, Vilhelm Frimann Koren 1862-1951, Norwegian physicist and pioneer in modern meteorology . He worked on applying hydrodynamic and thermodynamic theories to atmospheric and hydrospheric conditions in order to predict future weather conditions. Bjerknes was professor at the universities of Oslo (1907-12, 1926-32); Leipzig (1912-17); and Bergen (1917-26), where he set up a geophysical institute. His work in meteorology and on electric waves was important in the early development of wireless telegraphy. His publications include Fields of Force (1906) and the classic book On the Dynamics of the Circular Vortex with Applications to the Atmosphere and to Atmospheric Vortex and Wave Motion Dynamic Meteorology and Hydrography (Vol. I and II, 1910-11; Vol. III, 1951). He evolved a theory of cyclones known as the polar front theory with his son Jakob Aall Bonnevie Bjerknes, 1897-1975, who became a U.S. citizen in 1946. Jakob Bjerknes served as professor of meteorology at the Univ. of Bergen (1931-40) and at the Univ. of California (from 1940).
