George Birkhoff 's parents were David Birkhoff, who was a medical doctor, and Jane Gertrude Droppers. George was educated in Chicago where he was a student at the Lewis Institute from 1896 to 1902. In 1901 he began a correspondence with Harry Vandiver on a problem in number theory. Together they studied the prime factors of a n b n and later wrote up their work for publication. Graduating from the Lewis Institute in 1902, Birkhoff began his university education. He entered the University of Chicago in 1902, spending a year there, then moved to Harvard University where he studied from 1903 to 1905. While at Harvard he submitted the results he had obtained with Vandiver to the Annals of Mathematics in 1904 and this joint number theory paper became his first publication. Also in 1904 he submitted a paper on analysis to the American Mathematical Society. During these two years at Harvard the teacher who influenced him most was who taught him algebra and classical analysis. Birkhoff was awarded his A.B. by Harvard in 1905 and his A.M. in 1906.

George David Birkhoff (18841944) Birkhoff attended Harvard and the University of Chicago. He received his PhD from Chicago in 1907 for his dissertation on differential equations. Most of his work was done at Harvard, where he became a full professor in 1919. His major contributions were in dynamical systems (difference equations) and differential equations . He extended the work of Poincaré . He also worked on the four-color problem (colors required to produce a map) and applying mathematics to aesthetics in art, poetry, and music.

The Norbert Wiener Prize
The George David Birkhoff Prize
Principal Guideline
These two prizes, established in 1967, are awarded jointly by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Both are awarded for an outstanding contribution to applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense.
Prize Committees
The committees are ad hoc committees appointed jointly by the presidents of AMS and SIAM. Each committee has three members, one being designated as chair. Committee appointments should be made at least one year before the prize award date. The secretary of the AMS has the responsibility to notify the presidents of AMS and SIAM to make the appointments. Committee members will be members of SIAM and/or the AMS. At least one of the members of each committee will be a SIAM member. The committees are to report their findings at least three months before the prize award date. The committees complete their duties with the awarding of the prize. If the committees report that no prizes can be awarded and this report is accepted by the Executive Committee of the SIAM Council and the appropriate Body of the AMS, then the duties of the committees will be completed.

Overisel, Mich.; father of Garrett Birkhoff. The son of a physician, he was educated at Harvard (B.A., 1905) and the Univ. of Chicago (Ph.D., 1907) After teaching shortly at Chicago and Princeton, he joined the faculty at Harvard (1912) where he taught until his death. Birkhoff, perhaps the first American mathematician of international repute, is known for his work on linear differential equations and difference equations. He was also deeply interested in and made contributions to the analysis of dynamical systems, celestial mechanics, the four-color map problem, and function spaces. In addition he wrote on the foundations of relativity and quantum mechanics and on art and music, e.g., Aesthetic Measure See his Collected Mathematical Papers (3 vol., 1950).

    Birkhoff, George David (1884-1944)

This entry contributed by Michel Barran The greatest American mathematician of the early 20th century. Birkhoff was educated at the University of Chicago, where he received his Ph.D. in 1907. He then taught at University of Wisconsin (1907-1909), Princeton (1909-1912), and Harward (1912-1939). He served as president of the American Mathematical Society (1924-26), as dean of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences (1935-39), and as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1936-37). He was also editor of Annals of Mathematics Transactions of the American Mathematical Society (1920-25), and the American Journal of Mathematics (1943-44). Over the course of his career, Birkhoff was honored with numerous prizes and awards. Birkhoff conducted research mainly in mathematical analysis and analysis applied to dynamics. He formulated the ergodic theorem, which transformed the Maxwell-Boltzmann ergodic hypothesis of the kinetic theory of gases into a rigorous principle. He also investigated linear differential equations and theory of difference equations. He studied periodic orbits and three-body problems within general theory of dynamic systems and ergodic theory, and found the existence of an infinite number of periodic solutions to the restricted three-body problem Birkhoff also studied regularization in a 1915 paper. In topology, Birkhoff proved
