Jacob studied theology at Basel and at the same time taught himself mathematics. After a short period as a private tutor in Geneva and France, he travelled through the Netherlands, England and Germany. During this journey he became acquainted with the contemporary mathematics and physics of Descartes, Huygens, Wallis and Barrow. In 1687 Jacob was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Basel. In the following years he rediscovered, together with his brother Johann, the secrets of Leibniz's calculus and began a correspondence with Leibniz. Jacob published his discoveries in more than sixty papers in the scientific journals of his time. For himself, he recorded his thoughts in a scientific diary ( Meditationes ), which is an outstanding testimony to his mathematical genius. Jacob published no books; his Ars Conjectandi remained unfinished and did not appear until eight years after his death. Recognized as one of the greatest mathematicians of his time, Jacob died in Basel in 1705. "The devices of this calculus are yet known to few people, and I do not know anybody who has understood my meaning better than this famous man."

Jacob Bernoulli
Jacob Bernoulli is sometimes called Jacques Bernoulli. His father was Nicolaus Bernoulli, a mathematician. During the time that Jacob Bernoulli was taking his university degree in theology he was studying mathematics and astronomy against the wishes of his parents. In 1676, finishing his degree, Bernoulli moved to Geneva where he worked as a tutor. He then travelled to France spending 2 years studying with the followers of Descartes. In 1681 Bernoulli travelled to the Netherlands where he met many mathematicians. Continuing his studies with the leading mathematicians and scientists of Europe he went to England where, among others, he met Boyle and Hooke. As a result of his travels, Bernoulli began a correspondence with many mathematicians which he carried on over many years. Jacob Bernoulli returned to Switzerland and taught mechanics at the University in Basel from 1683, giving a series of important lectures on the mechanics of solids and liquids. Bernoulli studied the work of Descartes, Wallis, and Barrow and through these he became interested in infinitesimal geometry. Jacob began publishing in 1682. Jacob's younger brother, Johann Bernoulli, began to work on mathematical topics, and asked him to teach him mathematics. Jacob Bernoulli was appointed professor of mathematics in Basel in 1687 and the two brothers began to study the calculus as presented by Leibniz in his 1684 paper on the differential calculus. It must be understood that Leibniz's publications on the calculus were very obscure to mathematicians of that time and the Bernoullis were the first to try to understand and apply Leibniz's theories.

Jacob Bernoulli was born in December 27, 1654 in Basel. First he studdied theology because his father wanted him to. Soon after that he soon became interested in math. Jacob traveled in, France, Holland, Belgium, and England. He founded a seminary for experimental physics at Basel in 1682. In 1676 he became a professor of math at the University of Basel. He made important contributions to analytic geometry, the theory of probablity and he developed differential and integral calculus. His most important publication was the first meaningful exposition of the theory of probability. Jacob Bernoulli died on August 16, 1705. Return to 1700-1800 Main Page

Jacob Bernoulli 's father, Nicolaus Bernoulli (1623-1708) inherited the spice business in Basel that had been set up by his own father, first in Amsterdam and then in Basel. The family, of Belgium origin, were refugees fleeing from persecution by the Spanish rulers of the Netherlands. Philip, the King of Spain, had sent the Duke of Alba to the Netherlands in 1567 with a large army to punish those opposed to Spanish rule, to enforce adherence to Roman Catholicism, and to re-establish Philip's authority. Alba set up the Council of Troubles which was a court that condemned over 12000 people but most, like the Bernoulli family who were of the Protestant faith, fled the country. Nicolaus Bernoulli was an important citizen of Basel, being a member of the town council and a magistrate. Jacob Bernoulli's mother also came from an important Basel family of bankers and local councillors. Jacob Bernoulli was the brother of Johann Bernoulli and the uncle of Daniel Bernoulli . He was compelled to study philosophy and theology by his parents, which he greatly resented, and he graduated from the University of Basel with a master's degree in philosophy in 1671 and a licentiate in theology in 1676.

Jacob(II) Bernoulli was one of the sons of Johann(II) Bernoulli . Following the family tradition he took a degree in law but his interests were in mathematics and mathematical physics. In 1782 Jacob(II) Bernoulli's uncle Daniel Bernoulli died and his chair of physics in Basel became vacant. Jacob(II) applied for the chair and presented a work on mathematical physics to support his application. The decison as to who should fill the vacant chair was not made on academic grounds but was made by drawing lots. Jacob(II) Bernoulli was unlucky and he was not offered this position he would really have liked. He was then appointed as secretary to the Imperial Envoy to Turin and Venice. However, he was soon given the chance of another academic post when he received an offer from St Petersburg. He went to St Petersburg and began to write important works on mathematical physics which he presented to the St Petersburg Academy. These treatises were on elasticity, hydrostatics and ballistics. Despite the rather harsh climate, the city of St Petersburg had great attractions for Jacob(II) Bernoulli since his uncle

Bernoulli, Jakob (1654-1705)

Swiss mathematician (also known as Jacque I or James I) who was the brother of Johann Bernoulli . With his brother, he is considered the most important founder of calculus with the exception of Newton . Nonetheless, the two had bitter arguments about the quality of each other's work. In his Ars conjectandi (1713), which was published posthumously, he developed the properties of Bernoulli numbers It has still not been determined how Bernoulli was able to derive many of the properties of Bernoulli numbers he discovered (Smith 1994, p. 85). In a paper of sums, he remarks how useless Bullialdus's voluminous work Opus novum ad arithmeticum infinitorum (1682) was, which "did nothing more that compute with immense labor the sums of the first six powers, which is only a part of what we have accomplished in the space of a single page" (Smith 1994, p. 90). Ars conjectandi was also the first substantial treatise on probability It contained the general theory of permutation and combination the weak law of large numbers as well as the binomial theorem (for which the first adequate proof for positive integers was given) and multinomial theorem He solved the Bernoulli differential equation
