Rabbi Ben Ezra
In 1864, Rabbi Ben Ezra was first published in "Dramatis Personae," and the poem had thirty-two stanzas of six lines each. William Devane believes that Browning was inspired to write Rabbi Ben Ezra by Edward Fitzgerald’s The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Although this theory has not been proven, the philosophy of the Rabbi and the Persian tent-maker possess remarkable similarities. For example, the potter’s wheel is a strong figure in both poems (Devane p. 293). In order to understand the character of Rabbi Ben Ezra, it is important to know that Abraham Ibn Ezra was pushed out of his home land of Spain and forced to become a sojourner in foreign lands. This experience allowed him to see the world and enrich his philosophies of theology and science. Ibn Ezra’s greatest achievements were his commentaries on the books of the Old Testament, and he was a strong believer in the immortality of the soul. Because the religious beliefs of the Rabbi Ben Ezra are so similar to Browning’s beliefs, the poem can be studied as an expression of Browning’s own religious faith (Devane p.294). The main theme of Rabbi Ben Ezra is the "unity of life." Using the present life as best possible is important for advancement into the future. The Rabbi believes in balancing the body and the soul so that "nor soul helps flesh more than flesh helps soul" (Powell p.198). Through the lines, "Our times are in His hand/ Who saith, A whole I planned," the reader can identify the religious confidence that Rabbi Ben Ezra has. He has a hope for the future and an acceptance of the present. According to Naish, "The teaching of the Gospel serves as present inspiration of a faith content to leave the future in the confidence. Life eternal is there defined, not with reference to a future state, but as the knowledge of God" (p.201-202).

Twilight of a Golden Age
Selected Poems of Abraham Ibn Ezra
Edited and Translated With Introduction and Notes by Leon J. Weinberger Weinberger presents for the first time in an English translation a broad range of Abraham Ibn Ezra's sacred and secular poetry. Abraham Ibn Ezra (1092-1167), the last of an illustrious quintet of Hispanic "Golden Age" poets that included Samuel Ibn Nagrela, Solomon Ibn Gabirol, Moses Ibn Ezra, and Judah Halevi, was a transitional figure. He anticipated the decline of Hispano-Hebrew courtly culture in Spain even as he participated in the newly emerging centers of learning in Italy and France, which he visited and influenced. With Abraham Ibn Ezra's departure from Spain an illustrious chapter of Jewish learning and culture came to an end in the region, even as that culture was to spread its influence throughout the rest of Europe. One of the best-known and admired Jewish figures in the West, Ibn Ezrawhose Pisan Tables was the authoritative astronomical guide for Roger Bacon, Nicolas of Cusa, and Pico della Mirandolais remembered for his pioneering efforts in introducing the mathematics of the Arabs to the Europeans. In Victorian England, Ibn Ezra was the model for Robert Browning's "Rabbi Ben Ezra," whose philosophy reflected "robust hope and cheerfulness." Author of more than 100 books on medicine, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, poetry, linguistics, and extensive commentaries on the Bible and the Talmud, Ibn Ezra was the model itinerant sageteaching and writing both in his native Spain and in North Africa, Italy, Provence, Northern France, and England.

Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra's Commentary to the Torah:
Title
This original title for Ibn Ezra's commentary on the Torah is rarely used. It is taken to mean "the book of the upright" and is the title of a work that is cited in the Bible.(e.g., Joshua 10:13).
Author
Rabbi Abraham ben Meir Ibn Ezra was born and educated in the "Golden Age" of Muslim Spain. He excelled as a poet, philosopher, grammarian and Biblical commentator.
Dates
c. 1089 - c. 1164.
Place
Originally from Tudela, Spain. The latter part of his life (after 1140) was spent wandering in poverty through Italy, Provence, France, England, Egypt and Israel. It was during his wanderings that he composed most of his many influential literary works.
Description
Ibn Ezra's works of Biblical interpretation were based primarily on a meticulous foundation of Hebrew grammar and philology, and attention to the realia of Biblical life. His critical sense leads him to raise questions regarding the traditional ascriptions of authorship to Biblical books, anticipating some of the conclusions of modern scholarship. Ibn Ezra was aware of his departures from Rashi 's approach; though fact he was not entirely above applying homiletical or allegorical interpretations, as in his commentaries to Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs.

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

A Window into Jewish Medieval Life
TAU celebrates 100 years since the discovery of the Cairo Geniza with a special Centennial Conference, held in conjunction with the Hebrew University by Daniella Ashkenazi Storage of manuscripts, books and various documents in an attic of the Ben Ezra synagogue in Fostat (ancient Cairo).
(Diorama. Beth Hatefutsoth, Permanent Exhibition) Most people have heard of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Ask the average person if he's ever heard of the Cairo Geniza, however, and chances are that the response will be a shrug of the shoulders, or a suggestion that " perhaps you mean Giza - home of the Great Pyramids?" In fact, the Geniza is a treasure house of information far more important from a Jewish standpoint than the Dead Sea Scrolls, says world-renowned expert in the Geniza records, Prof. Mordechai A. Friedman, incumbent of the Joseph and Ceil Mazer Chair in Jewish Culture in Muslim Lands and Cairo Geniza Studies at TAU's Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies, the Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of the Humanities. Discovered 100 years ago, most of the Geniza's 250,000 fragments, including full page documents and a handful of books preserved in their entirety, were penned by members of the Jewish community in Cairo over a period of 250 years, between 1000 and 1250. They shed light on the mainstream of Jewish life and society during a period that had long remained in the dark due to scanty documentation, says Prof. Friedman.
