    back to Math main page back to robcol main page Tübitak Project Competition Bilge Demirköz , as a Lise 2 student at Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1996 used the Geometer's Sketchpad and NuCalc to explore the question, "If a circle is the set of all points in a plane at a fixed distance from one point, and an ellipse is the set of all points in a plane whose distance from two points is a fixed sum, then what is the set of all points in a plane whose distance from three points is a fixed sum?" The resulta project she titles "A Family of Curves" won her a Tübitak Project Competition award from the Turkish National Science Foundation.
    Ivars Peterson's MathLand September 2, 1996 Beyond the Ellipse There's a simple trick one can use to draw an ellipse. Tie the ends of a length of string to two pins (or thumbtacks) stuck in a sheet of paper on a drawing board. Then, keeping the string taut with the point of a pencil, allow the pencil to trace a path around the pins. The resulting curve is an ellipse, with the two pins, or fixed points, representing its foci. This drawing method takes advantage of the geometric fact that the sum of the distances from the foci of an ellipse is the same for all points on the curve. Thus, If A and B are the foci of an ellipse, the total distance (AP + PB) from the foci to any point P on the curve is constant.

The programs were shown to directors of Bell Atlantic Consumers Services Group during a September meeting in New York. Both video programs were graphic intensive and utilized a great deal of production on the Flame and Avid.
    Eric Temple and John Butz of Canyon Productions served as producers, Judith Crocker was the writer and David Taschler was the Flame artist and compositor. Production took place at Bell Atlantic’s Digital Production Studio in Reston, Virginia.

    Excerpt from MATH ODYSSEY 2000 Perhaps one of the reasons that Carl Friedrich Gauss was able to create so much mathematics in his lifetime was that he got a very early start. Just consider the following two events: when he was 3 years old he corrected his father's arithmetic, and in school, when he was in the third grade, he developed a formula for finding the sum of any arithmetic progression. Gauss was born in Brunswick, Germany as the only son of poor peasants living in miserable conditions. He exhibited such early genius that his family and neighbors called him the "wonder child". When he was two years old, he gradually got his parents to tell him how to pronounce all the letters of the alphabet. Then, by sounding out combinations of letters, he learned (on his own) to read aloud. He also picked up the meanings of the number symbols and learned to do arithmetical calculations. The story as told by Eric T. Bell: "One Saturday Gerhardt Gauss was making out the weekly payroll for the laborers under his charge, unaware that his young son was following the proceedings with critical attention. Coming to the end of his long computations, Gerhardt was startled to hear the little boy pipe up, 'Father, the reckoning is wrong, it should be ..."     Math Department Colloquium Series
    Colloquia are usually on Thursdays. This week we have a talk on Friday. There will be another colloquium on the following thursday. Colloquium:

    • Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Taback, from the UC Berkeley Mathematics Department
    • Title: "Hyperbolic Tessellations and Escher's Art"
    • Description: Everyone is familiar with the regular Euclidean tessellations of the plane by equilateral triangles, squares and hexagons. What kind of geometry would we have to impose on the plane to make regular octagons tessellate, say 8 to a vertex? I will talk (interactively) about this type of geometry, called hyperbolic geometry, and contrast some basic properties of hyperbolic geometry with those of Euclidean geometry. We have all seen examples of hyperbolic geometry in some of Escher's tessellations. Together we will examine these drawings, and look for their hyperbolic symmetries.

    Introduction
    Mathematician, physicist, geodesist, astronomer... those are just a few of the roles that Carl Friedrich Gauss played in his 77 years. Gauss was born on April 30, 1777 in Brunswick, Germany, and died on February 23, 1855, after a full and prolific lifetime.
    Childhood
    Gauss had an early start on his education. When he was two, he convinced his parents to tell him how the letters of the alphabet sounded. On his own, Gauss put letters together, sounded them out, and taught himself how to read. He also figured out number symbols on his own and started doing calculations. It is said that he knew how to calculate before he could speak (Cung). A famous story about Gauss' childhood is that when he was around three years old, he corrected his father's calculations. As told by Eric T. Bell, "One Saturday Gerhardt Gauss was making out the weekly payroll for the laborers under his charge, unaware that his young son was following the proceedings with critical attention. Coming to the end of his long computations, Gerhardt was startled to hear the little boy pipe up, 'Father, the reckoning is wrong, it should be ..." A check of the account showed that the figure named by the young Gauss was correct" (Bell). Another famous story is about Gauss' early education. When Gauss was around seven or eight years old, his elementary school class was told to sum up all the numbers from 1 to 100. This was supposed to serve as busy work; the teacher also planned to show them the shortcut. However, Gauss beat him to itwith one glance, he was able to figure out that all he had to do was to match the numbers up in pairs. There would be 50 pairs of numbers, each summing to 101, so all Gauss did was to multiply 50 by 101. This amazed his teacher, who then continued to encourage Gauss in his studies, sending for special math books. When Gauss' teacher was no longer able to teach Gauss anything, he was referred to the Duke of Brunswick, who gave him a stipend so that he was able to continue to pursue his studies (Falbo).
