Who was the Reverend Thomas Bayes?
The following is quoted from the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Bayes, Thomas (b. 1702, London - d. 1761, Tunbridge Wells, Kent), mathematician who first used probability inductively and established a mathematical basis for probability inference (a means of calculating, from the number of times an event has not occured, the probability that it will occur in future trials). He set down his findings on probability in "Essay Towards Solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances" (1763), published posthumously in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. The only works he is known to have published in his lifetime are Divine Benevolence, or an Attempt to Prove That the Principal End of the Divine Providence and Government is the Happiness of His Creatures (1731) and An Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions, and a Defence of the Mathematicians Against the Objections of the Author of the Analyst (1736) which countered attacks by Bishop Berkeley on the logical foundations of Newton's calculus. Here is some more information about Bayes taken from the book The Official Guide to Bunhill Fields . Bunhill Fields is a park in London, England where Bayes is buried (see The Burial Place of Bayes below).

Thomas Bayes (1702-1761) Given the number of times in which an unknown event has happened and failed: Required the chance that the probability of its happening in a single trial lies somewhere between any two degrees of probability that can be named." In a (now) famous essay published posthumously (1764), Thomas Bayes asked this question, and gave an answer. The question is a version of "inverse problem":if you know that a certain kind of event E (e.g., head appears on a coin toss) occurs with probability x , you can calculate the probability that E occurs s times out of n trials, and this is a "direct problem"; but Bayes's question goes into the opposite direction, looking for the correct value of x (e.g., what's the probability of head on this coin?), based on the result of n trials, and hence it is "inverse". First, it must be noticed that he defined probability as follows: The probability of any event is the ratio of the value at which an expectation depending on the happening of the event ought to be computed, and the value of the thing expected upon its happening. In short, he regarded probability as a sort of (rational) betting ratio , and he tried to derive the laws of probability (including what we now call Bayes's Theorem) from this definition. Thus it is quite understandable why modern Bayesians call themselves by his name.

Thomas Bayes Dates:
Born: 1702
Died: April 7, 1761 Biography: Thomas Bayes, and English clergyman and mathematician, proposed an interesting argument regarding the nature of evidence and propositions in his Essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances (1764). According to Bayes, evidence confirms the likelihood that a proposition is true only to the degree to which the appearance of this evidence is more probable when accompanied by the proposition than not. For example, the appearance of smoke confirms the proposition "There is a fire" very strongly because the appearance of smoke with fire is much more probable than the appearance of smoke without fire. On the other hand, the appearance of an eye in nature does not confirm the proposition "God exists" because the appearance of an eye

Models and Physical Reality
Probability Theory is a mathematical model of uncertainty. In these lectures, we introduce examples of uncertainty and we explain how the theory models them. It is important to appreciate the difference between uncertainty in the physical world and the models of Probability Theory. That difference is similar to that between laws of theoretical physics and the real world: even though mathematicians view the theory as standing on its own, when engineers use it, they see it as a model of the physical world. Consider flipping a fair coin repeatedly. Designate by and 1 the two possible outcomes of a coin flip (say for head and 1 for tail). This experiment takes place in the physical world. The outcomes are uncertain. This week, we try to appreciate the probability model of this experiment and to relate it to the physical reality.

Instead, all that I can offer you is one of the two known surviving examples of Bayes's signature. It is from a letter to Philip Stanhope held in the Centre for Kentish Studies. The other surviving signature is on a document related to a lawsuit, and is held in the Public Record Office. The letter to Stanhope is among several manuscripts of Thomas Bayes that were sent to Stanhope. I have written a paper describing this manuscript collection that I found in February of 2001. The paper will appear in a forthcoming issue of Historia Mathematica
