The Tomb of Thomas Bayes
From owner-bayes-news at stat.cmu.edu Sat May 11 03:05:09 1996 From: Professor A O'Hagan Date: Fri, 10 May 96 17:28:30 BST To: allstat at mailbase.ac.uk, bayes-news at stat.cmu.edu Subject: Bayes and Bunhill Fields All good Bayesians know that the tomb of Thomas Bayes is in Bunhill Fields in London, near the new RSS premises. I visited there yesterday, as I often do to pay homage :-) For the first time in years I found the attendant's hut occupied, and I was able to buy a copy of "The Official Guide to Bunhill Fields". Many years ago there was a flimsy leaflet which did not mention Bayes, and around 1987 when I arranged for the tomb to be cleaned I had some correspondence with the Corporation of London (who are responsible for Bunhill Fields) about Bayes. They promised to show his tomb on the big display map in Bunhill Fields itself, which they have done - the tomb has been clearly marked in this way for several years now. They also promised that some information about him would be included when they next printed the leaflet. At last I have got a copy of the smart new booklet, printed in 1991.

Thomas Bayes ' father was one of the first six Nonconformist ministers to be ordained in England. Thomas was educated privately, something that appears necessary for the son of a Nonconformist minister at that time. Nothing is known of his tutors but Barnard in [4] points out the intriguing possibility that he could have been tutored by de Moivre who was certainly giving private tuition in London at this time. Thomas Bayes was ordained, a Nonconformist minister like his father, and at first assisted his father in Holborn. In the late 1720s he became minister of the Presbyterian Chapel in Tunbridge Wells, 35 miles southeast of London. On 24 August 1746 William Wiston describes having breakfast with Bayes who he says is:- ... a dissenting Minister at Tunbridge Wells, and a Successor, though not immediate, to Mr Humphrey Ditton, and like him a very good mathematician. Bayes apparently tried to retire from the ministry in 1749 but remained minister at Tunbridge Wells until 1752 when he retired, but continued to live in Tunbridge Wells.

Bayesian Statistics
Who was the Reverend Thomas Bayes?
The following is quoted from the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Bayes, Thomas (b. 1702, London - d. 1761, Tunbridge Wells, Kent), mathematician who first used probability inductively and established a mathematical basis for probability inference (a means of calculating, from the number of times an event has not occured, the probability that it will occur in future trials). He set down his findings on probability in "Essay Towards Solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances" (1763), published posthumously in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. The only works he is known to have published in his lifetime are Divine Benevolence, or an Attempt to Prove That the Principal End of the Divine Providence and Government is the Happiness of His Creatures (1731) and An Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions, and a Defence of the Mathematicians Against the Objections of the Author of the Analyst (1736) which countered attacks by Bishop Berkeley on the logical foundations of Newton's calculus. Here is some more information about Bayes taken from the book The Official Guide to Bunhill Fields . Bunhill Fields is a park in London, England where Bayes is buried (see The Burial Place of Bayes below).

    Bayes Theorem
"This is Bayes' Theorem. It is named after Rev. Thomas Bayes, an 18th century mathematician who derived a special case of this theorem. Bayes' calculations [2] were published in 1763, two years after his death. Exactly what Bayes intended to do with the calculation, if anything, still remains a mystery today. However, this theorem, as generalized by Laplace [3], is the basic starting point for inference problems using probability theory as logic." [1]
