List of Sea Captains resident in Barrow and Ulverston The following lists have been taken from a book, "Furness Folk and Facts", published in 1930 by William White, himself a descendant of an Ulverston shipbuilder. Undoubtedley they are incomplete, especially the list for Barrow. I suspect also that some of the captains listed under Ulverston were actually resident in Barrow, or at least some of them such as Robert Charnley and Henry Bond moved to live there as that port superceded Ulverston in the 1860's. List of Sea Captains who were resident in Ulverston The list is said to be arranged chronologically but no dates were given - my estimate is that it is from about 1850 to 1890.

Isaac Newton I saac Newton was born on Christmas Day of 1642 at Woolsthorpe in Lincolnshire, England. His father, who died before Isaac was born, was a gentleman lord of a manor on a small estate. Isaac was born prematurely to his mother Hannah, and it was not expected that he would survive. As a boy, Isaac was very quiet and reserved, spending his time alone making models instead of the typical play of the time such as hunting and horseback riding. This silent, withdrawn nature is a characteristic that would endure throughout his life. Isaac spent his early years attending the local village schools, but when he was twelve he traveled to Granthon, seven miles away, to attend the King's School. At Granthon, Isaac was placed in the lodgings of Mr. Clark, the local apothecary. Mr. Clark was very sympathetic towards Isaac's attention to building models and encouraged to his mechanisms during his free time. Even though Isaac Isaac gradually worked his way to the top of his class, he did not show any signs of his future brilliance while attending the King's School. Aristotle

Isaac Newton (1642-1727)

Isaac Newton's papers up for sale
By Ann Talbot 26 September 2000 Use this version to print A collection of Sir Isaac Newton's papers has been put up for sale, in what is probably the most important auction of scientific manuscripts for 70 years. The papers date from 1669, the most productive period in Newton's life, when he was developing his calculus and his theories of gravity and optics. The Earl of Macclesfield, who is selling the papers, has offered Cambridge University the opportunity to buy them rather than putting them up for auction at Sotheby's. Newton studied at Cambridge from 1661 and he occupied the Lucasian chair of mathematics from 1669 to 1701. The university already owns the bulk of Newton's papers, while another collection is kept in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. This new collection will enable researchers to throw fresh light on a crucial period in the intellectual development of a man who shaped modern scientific thinking. The plan is to put the papers on public display and to digitise them so that they can be made available on the Internet.

Isaac Newton, Principia mathematica
