Banneker, Benjamin
(b. Nov. 9, 1731, Ellicott's Mills, Md.d. Oct. 25, 1806, Baltimore, Md., U.S.), mathematician, astronomer, compiler of almanacs, inventor, and writer, one of the first important black American intellectuals. A free black who owned a farm near Baltimore, Banneker was largely self-educated in astronomy by watching the stars and in mathematics by reading borrowed textbooks. In 1761 he attracted attention by building a wooden clock that kept precise time. Encouraged in his studies by a Maryland industrialist, Joseph Ellicott, he began astronomical calculations about 1773, accurately predicted a solar eclipse in 1789, and published annually from 1791 to 1802 the Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia Almanac and Ephemeris. Appointed to the District of Columbia Commission by President George Washington in 1790, he worked with Andrew Ellicott and others in surveying Washington, D.C. As an essayist and pamphleteer, Banneker opposed slavery and war. He sent a copy of his first almanac to Thomas Jefferson, then U.S. secretary of state, along with a letter asking Jefferson's aid in bringing about better conditions for American blacks. Banneker's almanacs were acclaimed by European scientists to whom Jefferson made them known.

Background Information: Benjamin Banneker was born in 1731. He was the son of Robert and Mary Bannaky. His mother was the daughter of an Englishwoman and an African slave. His father was a former slave who had his freedom purchased from slavery. They lived on a farm along the Patapsco River approximately 10 miles from Baltimore. The farm was known as "Bannaky Springs" because of the fresh water springs on the land. Benjamin grew up helping his family raise tobacco crops. As a child, Benjamin learned to read from his grandmother. She taught him using her Bible, which was the only book she owned. Later Benjamin was able to attend a Quaker school for boys where he learned how to write and do simple arithmetic. It was also at this school that the spelling of his name was changed. It was Benjamin's schoolmaster who changed his last name from Bannaky to Banneker. Benjamin had obtained an 8th grade education by the age of 15. It was then that he took over the family farm. He spent most of his adult life as a tobacco farmer. When Benjamin was 21 years old, he saw a patent watch. He was fascinated with how the watch worked so he took it apart. By studying the pieces he created similar pieces that he carved out of wood. Benjamin used the pieces he carved to build the first clock to ever be fully assembled in America. His clock kept accurate time for over 40 years.

    Banneker, Benjamin
American astronomer, surveyor, and mathematician who published almanacs 1792-97.
He took part in the survey that prepared the establishment of the US capital, Washington DC.
Banneker was born near the Patapsco River in Baltimore County.
He was self-taught and worked most of his life on a tobacco farm.
He engaged in a long correspondence with politician Thomas Jefferson, defending the mental capacities of black people and urging the abolition of slavery.
In 1753, at the age of 21, having studied only a pocket watch, Banneker constructed a striking clock.
This was the first clock of its kind in America and operated for more than 40 years.
Having taught himself to calculate an ephemeris and to make projections for lunar and solar eclipses, Banneker compiled an ephemeris for each year 1791-1804, though not all were published.
He also wrote a dissertation on bees and did a study of locust plague cycles.

Banneker was known and respected throughout America and Europe for his mathematics skills. Using only a pocket watch as a model, he built the first wooden striking clock in America which kept accurate time for 53 years. In 1791, President Jefferson chose Banneker to assist in developing plans for laying out the streets of Washington D.C. Banneker also published a "Farmer's Almanac" from 1792-1797. He calculated the positions of the sun, moon, and planets, which enabled him to predict eclipses and weather conditions. Banneker died in 1806.

    Benjamin Banneker (Grades 3-12)
November 9 Issued in 1980, this U.S. postage stamp honors Benjamin Banneker. Benjamin Banneker, the great African American scientist and inventor, was born on November 9, 1731, on his parents' farm in Maryland. Though his father was once a slave, Benjamin was born free to Robert and Mary Bannaky (later changed to Banneker). Banneker's grandmother taught young Benjamin how to read and write using the Bible as a textbook. He later attended an integrated school for boys run by a Quaker. By the age of 15, Banneker had completed the equivalent of an eighth-grade education. As a young man, Banneker helped his parents on their farm. Demonstrating his ingenuity, he developed an irrigation system that used ditches and small dams to feed water from freshwater springs to the crops. Banneker inherited the farm after his father's death, and because of his irrigation system, his crops flourished even in years of drought.

Benjamin Banneker, the son of Robert and Mary Bannaky, was born in 1731. His grandfather was a slave from Africa and his grandmother was an indentured servant from England. His grandfather was known as Banna Ka, then later as Bannaky, his grandmother as Molly Walsh. His grandmother was a maid in England who had been sent to Maryland as an indentured servant. When she finished her seven years of service, she bought a farm along with two slaves to help her take care of it. Walsh freed both slaves and married one, Bannaky. They had several children, among them a daughter named Mary. When Mary Bannaky grew up, she bought a slave named Robert, married him and had several children, including Benjamin. Benjamin Banneker grew up on the family farm. Around town it was known as "Bannaky Springs" due to the fresh water springs on the land. Bannaky used ditches and little dams to control the water from the springs for irrigation. His work was so reliable that the Bannaky's crops flourished even in dry spells. The family of free blacks always raised good tobacco crops. Molly, Banneker's grandmother, taught him and his brothers to read, using her Bible as a lesson book. There was no school in the valley for the boys to attend. Then one summer, a Quaker school teacher came to live in the valley. He set up a school for boys. Benjamin Bannaky attended this school. The schoolmaster changed the spelling of his name to Banneker. At school he learned to write and do simple math.
