Hij behaalde in 1927 zijn B.Sc. in Physics and Engineering aan het California Institute of Technology, en ontving zijn Ph.D. daar in 1930. In de periode 1930-1933 was hij Research Fellow daar en vervolgens (1933) Assistant Professor of Physics, en Professor of Physics (1939). Gedurende de tweede wereldoorlog was hij ook actief in projecten voor het National Defence Research Committee en het Office of Scientific Research and Development. Zijn eerste onderzoeken waren op het gebied van röntgenstraling. Voor zijn doctoraalthesis bestudeerde hij de ruimtelijke verdeling van foto-electronen uit verschillende gassen door röntgenstraling. In 1930 begon hij kosmische straling te bestuderen met professor Millikan , wat leidde tot de ontdekking van het positon in 1932. Sinds 1933 werkte hij vooral aan straling en fundamentele deeltjes. In 1946 trouwde Anderson met Lorraine Bergman; ze kregen twee zonen, Marshall en David. Ph 12 Versuch Johann Jakob Balmer Johann Jakob Balmer wurde am 1.Mai 1825 in Lausen im Baselland geboren. Er starb am 12.März 1898 in Basel. Er studierte Mathematik und Architektur in Karlsruhe und Berlin. Der zeichnerisch und musikalisch Hochbegabte begnügte sich zeitlebens mit der Wirksamkeit als Schreib- und Rechenlehrer an der Töchterschule in Basel. Daneben lehrte er von 1865 bis 1890 als Privatdozent darstellende Geometrie an der Uni Basel. l = h[m /(m - n )] mit h = 3645,6 Å und n = 2, m = 3, 4, 5 ..., für die Linien H a , H b , H g usw.), die sich später als wesentliche Bestätigung der Quantentheorie und als eine der Grundlagen der Bohrschen Atomtheorie erwies. Balmer's Relationship for the Hydrogen Spectrum In 1885 Johann Jacob Balmer (1825-1898) produced an empirical relationship between the four prominent lines in the hydrogen spectrum. Utilizing the wavelengths (lambda) published earlier by the Swedish physicist and astronomer Anders Jonas Ångstrom, he showed that these agreed with the wavelengths calculated by the formula where n is a whole number, 3 for the red line, 4 for the green, 5 for the blue and 6 for the violet. Using other values of n in addition to these, the equation produces a series of lines which crowd together as n gets successively larger. If n is taken as infinity, the series converges at a wavelength limit of 3645.6 Å. Without having seen such a line, Balmer suggested that there should be one at the edge of the visible violet. A colleague informed him that this line and several more in the ultraviolet region had been detected. These corresponded almost exactly with the frequencies calculated by Balmer's formula. In his paper, Balmer suggested that there might be other series of lines in the hydrogen spectrum corresponding to wavelengths calculated by replacing 2 in his formula by 1 , etc.
