EDITOR's
COMMENTS
In a monograph published in the spring 1996 Elizabethan Review , John Baker contended that Shakespeare's manuscript copy of the play Henry IV is located in the Folger Shakespeare Library, catalogued there as document V.b.34 and known as the Dering Manuscript. Acknowledgement of Baker's thesis would add a new drama to the Shakespeare canon. Further, it would move back the play's original date of composition to 1593 from the traditional datings of 1596 and 1598 for and 2 Henry IV , respectively. It also would provide scholars with a look at how Shakespeare originally conceived the drama in a unified version before expansion into two plays. Moreover, it would explain why a gap of 23 pages exists in the 1623 First Folio, between pages 43 and 67. The manuscript was discovered in 1845 in the private library of Sir Edward Dering (1598-1644). The proposition that the 55-page manuscript was the author's fair copy of a unified version of the two-part play originated with American scholar Hardin Craig in 1954. When his argument was misrepresented by critics, wrote Baker, the Folger Shakespeare Library chose to downgrade the provenance of the manuscript, from being Shakespeare's fair copy of his original, to being a condensed version of the drama that Sir Edward Dering prepared from several quartos of the two-part play published between 1613 and 1622. However, many pages in the Dering manuscript are written in two distinct hands, the standard method by which authors of the period formally checked against the original manuscript for scribal errors.

    Henry M. Jackson Wilderness Area
The Henry M. Jackson Wilderness, created by the 1984 Washington Wilderness Act, is located adjacent to the southwest corner of the Glacier Peak Wilderness. This 102,673-acre area is northwest of Stevens Pass on Highway 2 and northeast of the town of Skykomish. While this Wilderness straddles the Cascade Mountain Range, most of it is in the Westside ecotype. The vegetation includes cedars, Douglas-fir, true firs, spruce, western and mountain hemlock, and at higher elevations, alpine meadows. The terrain is rugged, with steep slopes, and finger ridges dissected by small intermittent or permanent drainages. Streams in the northern portion of this area drain into the Sauk River, while the southern portion drains into the Skykomish River. Main features of this area include Cady Creek Ridge and Cady Creek. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail traverses the southern portion of the Wilderness. The area is rich in mining history with several acres of patented mining claims within its borders.

We camped on the creek, outside the town, and kept him in the camp with us as much as possible, and did all we could for him. Andy got the constable in charge of the police station to lock him up for a night, but it only made him worse: we took him back to the camp next morning and while our eyes were off him for a few minutes he slipped away into the scrub, stripped himself naked, and started to hang himself to a leaning tree with a piece of clothes-line rope. We got to him just in time. His brother Ned turned up on the last day, and Bob thought he was the devil, and grappled with him. It took the three of us to hold the Boss down sometimes. Bulletin and other Sydney papers. She had her hair done and was dressed in the city style, and that took us back a bit at first. There was something the matter with one of the children in a back-room, and the sister went to see to it. Mrs Baker cried a little quietly.

Baker Farm I set out one afternoon to go a-fishing to Fair Haven, through the woods, to eke out my scanty fare of vegetables. My way led through Pleasant Meadow, an adjunct of the Baker Farm, that retreat of which a poet has since sung, beginning, "Thy entry is a pleasant field, Which some mossy fruit trees yield Partly to a ruddy brook, By gliding musquash undertook, And mercurial trout, Darting about." I thought of living there before I went to Walden. I "hooked" the apples, leaped the brook, and scared the musquash and the trout. It was one of those afternoons which seem indefinitely long before one, in which many events may happen, a large portion of our natural life, though it was already half spent when I started. By the way there came up a shower, which compelled me to stand half an hour under a pine, piling boughs over my head, and wearing my handkerchief for a shed; and when at length I had made one cast over the pickerelweed, standing up to my middle in water, I found myself suddenly in the shadow of a cloud, and the thunder began to rumble with such emphasis that I could do no more than listen to it. The gods must be proud, thought I, with such forked flashes to rout a poor unarmed fisherman. So I made haste for shelter to the nearest hut, which stood half a mile from any road, but so much the nearer to the pond, and had long been uninhabited:
