English mathematician who devised a precursor of the computer. He designed an analytical engine , a general-purpose mechanical computing device for performing different calculations according to a program input on punched cards (an idea borrowed from the Jacquard loom). This device was never built, but it embodied many of the principles on which digital computers are based. Babbage was a founder member of the Royal Astronomical Society, the British Association, the Cambridge Philosophical Society, and the Statistical Society of London. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society 1816. His book On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures 1832 is an analysis of industrial production systems and their economics. In 1991, the British Science Museum completed Babbage's second difference engine (to demonstrate that it would have been possible with the materials then available). It evaluates polynomials up to the seventh power, with 30-figure accuracy.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Babbage, Charles English mathematician who devised a precursor of the computer. He designed an analytical engine, a general-purpose mechanical computing device for performing different calculations according to a program input on punched cards (an idea borrowed from the Jacquard loom). This device was never built, but it embodied many of the principles on which digital computers are based. Babbage was born in Totnes, Devon. As a student at Cambridge, he assisted John Herschel with his astronomical calculations and thought they could be better done by machines. His mechanical calculator, or difference engine , begun in 1822, which could compute squares to six places of decimals, got him a commission from the British Admiralty for an expanded version. But this project was abandoned in favour of the analytical engine, on which he worked for the rest of his life. The difference engine could perform only one function, once it was set up. The analytical engine was intended to perform many functions it was to store numbers and be capable of working to a program. The first computer printer, also designed but never built by Charles Babbage, was completed and put on show at London's Science Museum in April 2000.

Babbage, Charles 1792-1871, English mathematician and inventor. He devoted most of his life and expended much of his private fortune and a government subsidy in an attempt to perfect a mechanical calculating machine that foreshadowed present-day machines. He was a founder of the Royal Astronomical Society. He wrote Tables of Logarithms (1827) and an autobiography (1864). See biographies by Maboth Moseley (1970) and Dan Halacy (1970).

    Babbage, Charles (1792-1871)

British inventor Charles Babbage is one of the great paradoxes of computing history. Although he is often credited with developing the first “general-purpose computer,” he never actually built any examples of his design. His steam-powered Analytical Engine, as it was called, would seem extremely primitive to us today, but in the 1830s, it was a groundbreaking design. It consisted of five main components—the store (which equates to today’s memory; it could hold 1,000 numbers of 50 digits each), the mill (which is analogous to a processor), the control (which equates to a group of simple programs; these were stored on punch cards), the input (data in), and the output (final result).
Babbage was born in Teignmouth, Devonshire (UK) into a middle-class banking family. He followed an educational path typical for his age and status, entering Trinity College at Cambridge in 1810 and receiving his master’s degree from Cambridge in 1817. As an active participant in the mathematical circles of the day, he founded the Analytical Society, the B....

    Config.sys Commands For Your Keyboard
Whether you’re a power user or a neophyte in the computing world, you can use DOS commands to set up your computer just the way you want it. Many of the commands referred to as you learn about DOS are a little on the strange side and probably won’t be employed much by the average PC user. There are special cases, however, when you may want to fine-tune your computer’s behavior as much as possible through the Config.sys file.
Changing Config.sys NOTE: Before changing your Config.sys file, make a backup copy of it in case you run into problems and need to restore the original file. To change your Config.sys file, type edit config.sys in its place. The OK command at the bottom of the Open dialog box should be highlighted; press ENTER to accept it and open the Config.sys file. Use the arrow keys to move between lines in the file. (If you’re adding a line to the file instead of changing an existing line, use the Down arrow until you’re on the first empty line after the existing lines in the file and type in your new line.) Once you’ve made your changes, activate the menu bar by pressing ALT again. Choose Exit from the File menu; you’ll get a prompt asking whether you want to save the loaded file. The Yes option should be highlighted; press ENTER to accept this option and save....
