USA Dear President, I understand that you are contemplating major changes in the Mathematics Department at the University of Rochester. The American Mathematical Society, of which I am a member, has expressed its concern and is setting up a task force under Professor Arthur Jaffe of Harvard University to investigate the matter. I hesitate to interfere in the internal affairs of another university and I can quite understand that universities have to respond to financial pressures by reassessing their activities. However, I am concerned that the role of Mathematics may not be fully appreciated and I hope you will allow me to address the matter from that viewpoint. Perhaps I should explain that, as the recently retired President of the Royal Society (the UK equivalent of the US National Academy of Sciences). I have had responsibilities across the whole of science. In addition I currently direct the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, where we run programmes that involve the interaction of mathematics with other fields. From all this experience I am firmly of the view that Mathematics still occupies a central role in both the Natural and Social Sciences. Increasingly the complex problems that scientists now face require more sophisticated mathematical understanding. The advent of more powerful computers has in no way decreased the fundamental relevance of mathematics.

Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Commemorates 20 Years with Special Presentations and a Film Series
By Genevieve Shiffrar October 16, 2002 In the hills above the Berkeley campus, eucalyptus and cedars create a shimmering earth-toned curtain to frame the majestic views from a subtle yet elegant building. This is the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute ( MSRI ), where mathematicians from around the world gather to explore together the most significant questions in their fields. Opening its doors in 1982, MSRI now hosts over 1300 mathematical scientists a year to participate in programs, workshops, and postdoctoral training. The institute celebrates its 20th anniversary this month with a series of public lectures and a film series, all of broad interest to the general public. Although the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute is primarily funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), it is connected in many ways to Berkeley's Department of Mathematics . In fact, three Berkeley Mathematics faculty members submitted the original successful funding proposal to the NSF in 1979: Shiing-Shen Chern, Calvin Moore and I. M. Singer. Since then, 430 Berkeley faculty and students have registered and participated in MSRI programs and workshops. Berkeley faculty have also been deeply involved in the direction of MSRI activities, contributing 47 of its program organizers and 34 of its workshop organizers.

  • Sir Michael Atiyah , Professor, University of Edinburgh Michael Atiyah received his Ph.D. from Cambridge in 1954, and has held positions at Oxford and Cambridge, prior to moving to Edinburgh. He has contributed to a wide range of mathematics centering on the interaction between geometry and analysis, and was awarded a Fields medal in 1966. Among his many accomplishments are the development of K-theory (with F. Hirzebruch) and the well known Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem. 91. Geometry And Physics A Marriage Made In Heaven
Geometry and Physics A Marriage Made in Heaven Lecture by Sir MichaelAtiyah ( University of Edinburgh ) University of Michigan

WLAP UMICH PHYSICS COLLOQ ... WINTER 2002 > ATIYAH
Geometry and Physics: A Marriage Made in Heaven
Lecture by Sir Michael Atiyah University of Edinburgh University of Michigan, Ann Arbor 03 Apr 2001
duration: slides
Summary of Talk: Geometry and Physics have lived together in close association for centuries. The relationship has had its ups and downs, but for the past 25 years it has blossomed in a remarkable manner. New physical theories require very sophisticated mathematical models and have in turn had a profound influence on contemporary mathematics. Sir Michael Atiyah will present an overall view of the history and current state of this cosmic marriage. Choose the format you wish to use to view the lecture:

Additional Notes: Sir Michael Atiyah received both his B.A. and Ph.D. (1955) from Trinity College, Cambridge, England. He held postdoctoral appointments at Cambridge and the Institute for Advanced Study. He arrived in Oxford in 1961 as a Reader and then from 1963 to 1969 he held the Savilian Chair of Geometry. He spent 3 years as Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study before returning to Oxford as a Royal Society Research Professor. In 1990 he became Master of Trinity College and the first Director of the Newton Institute for Mathematical Studies in Cambridge. He retired from these positions in 1997 and 1996 respectively. Professor Atiyah is currently an Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh.
