Letter to the Editor May 2001
The Scotsman, UK By Sir Michael Atiyah
President, Pugwash Conferences
Tam Dalyell ( The Scotsman , May 14) is quite right to draw attention to the important international issue of National Missile Defence and to regret the absence of any reference to it in the General Election campaign. The decision of President George W. Bush to press ahead with NMD has aroused widespread concern. It raises the danger of a new arms race. The view of the UK Government appears to be that the decision has been taken and that opposition by the UK would be ineffective and would damage the "special relationship". But this is to ignore both the complexities of American politics and the very lengthy process of developing a new weapons system. The debate will, in one form or another, continue down the years and a strong and articulate opposition from Europe (including the UK) would be a significant factor affecting the final outcome. There are many in the United States who would welcome such a stand by Europe and would not feel that it was, in any way, anti-American. Many political analysts, including George Kerevan in

Geometry and Physics : A Marriage made in Heaven
Wednesday, April 3, 2002. 4:00 pm in Hale Auditorium Geometry and Physics have lived together in close association for centuries. The relationship has had its ups and downs, but for the past 25 years it has blossomed in a remarkable manner. New physical theories require very sophisticated mathematical models and have in turn had a profound influence on contemporary mathematics. I will present an overall view of the history and current state of this cosmic marriage.

Polyhedra in Geometry, Physics and Chemistry
Tuesday, April 23, 2002. 12:00 pm in 340 West Hall Polyhedra, particularly regular ones, have been studied by Geometers for over thwo thousand years and have connections with various parts of Mathematics. In the natural sciences they also occur in crystals and more recently in the Fullerenes of Carbon Chemistry. I will discuss models of "particles" in equilibrium under various force laws and the polyhedral shapes that they take up. Even for the simplest models computer simulation is needed and I shall illustrate the answers with computer generated pictures.

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Fullerenes as Minimum Energy Configurations
Michael Atiyah
A number of quite different problems appear to lead to similar minimum energy configurations. Surprisingly these turn out to be of the type familiar in carbon chemistry under the name of Fullerenes. I shall survey these problems and provide pictures of computer simulations due to Richard Battye and Paul Sutcliffe.

Sir Michael Atiyah to visit Vassar College, April 10-11
Sir Michael Atiyah of the University of Edinburgh will deliver the eighth annual Asprey Lectures in Mathematics on April 10 and April 11, at Vassar College. Professor Atiyah's lecture for a general audience, titled "Atoms, Knots, and Elementary Particles," is scheduled at 8 p.m. on Monday, April 10, in Rockefeller Hall, room 300. It will be followed by a reception for the speaker. His second lecture, "A Problem in Elementary Geometry," is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. On Tuesday, April 11, in Rockefeller Hall, room 312, and will be preceded by tea at 4 p.m. in Rockefeller, room 305. The April 11 lecture is intended for a mathematical audience. Both lectures are free of charge and open to the public.
Atiyah is one of the world's most distinguished mathematicians. He is noted for his contributions to geometry, topology, and mathematical physics, for which he was awarded the Fields Medal the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in mathematics in 1966. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and has served as its president. During his distinguished career he has been the Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford University and Master of Trinity College, Cambridge.
Atiyah holds honorary doctorates from several universities including the universities of Bonn, Dublin, and Chicago. He was knighted for his contributions to mathematics and science in 1983.
