Aya Sofia Page Down Page Up Back to Thumbnails Turkey Map ... List Turkey Photos Page 10 of 21 Aya Sofia stands on the site of two former Basilicas, both destroyed by fire. Emperor Justinian had a fireproof replacement built in 532-37. The architects, Anthemius of Tralles and Isidorus of Milenus achieved the near impossible with their design for the apparently unsupported dome. It was built from special hollow, porous bricks imported from Greece. This time it was not fire but an earthquake which brought it tumbling down just 11 years after it's completion. Many Emperors and Sultans have been involved in buttressing and strengthening the foundations. When we visited a massive and much needed interior restoration job was under way. Following the siege and subsequent fall of Constantinople, Aya Sofia became a mosque and all images and Christian symbols were removed. Fortunately the mosaics were coated with plaster and some survived. The altar and pulpit were replaced by the Muslim equivalents. Four minarets, were added to the corners thought not at the same time and the cross on the dome became a crescent .

The Emperor Justinian the Great built the present structure with the expertiseof the great architects anthemius of tralles and Isidorus of Melitus.
http://users.forthnet.gr/ath/frc/hsophia.html
The Great Church of Christ: Hagia Sophia
First completed on 15 February 360 by the Emperor Constantius, son of St. Constantine the Great. This first building was burnt down in 404 during a riot by the supporters of St. John Chrysostom, when he was deposed by the Empress Eudoxia. The second church was built by the Emperor Theodosius II in the same year. This structure stood until 532, when it was destroyed in the Nika Revolt. The Emperor Justinian the Great built the present structure with the expertise of the great architects Anthemius of Tralles and Isidorus of Melitus. The Church was consecrated on 16 December in the year 537. This is the structure which stands today, 56 meters high (a 15-storey building). The day before Constantinople fell to the Ottoman army, 28 May 1453, the last Christian services were held and attended by the last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI Dragases. Shudder thou sun, groan thou earth: the City has fallen. The hour has passed for us to fight. Let us take thought for our own safety. Thus our enemy took possession of our City on Tuesday, May 29, about two and a half hours after dawn.

Sophia, Divine Wisdom. Icon, 16th century.
The Greek word “Sophia” for the Ukrainian ear sounds like a woman’s name Sofia. The Greek word means “wisdom”. In the course of time, philosophers, both ancient and modern, pondered the hidden meaning that seemed to lurk in the word. Solomon, son of David and one of the greatest kings of ancient Israel, was the first, ten centuries before Christ, to attach a special importance to wisdom. He prayed God to give him wisdom rather than riches, power or fame.
Central Dome of the Cathedral, with the representation of the Pantocrator. Mosaic, 11th century.
Holy Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, 11th century.
In the 4th-century Constantine the Great, the Roman Emperor at last, after three centuries of persecution, embraced Christianity as the official religion of his Empire. His new capital, New Rome, or Constantinople, was a rival in architectural glory to Rome itself. Constantine built a church devoted to the Holy Wisdom. The church was burned to the ground in 404. The cathedral was rebuilt (415) by Theodosius II; this church was also destroyed by fire in the great Nika riot of 532. Emperor Justinian I immediately set out to erect an even more splendid cathedral. The new church was completed, at fantastic expense (over 10,000 workers were said to have been employed), within the amazingly short period of five years.

Aya Sofia

Another miniature illustration of the no-longer extant church is found in a representation showing the removal of St. John Chrysostom's relics, in the Menologion of Basil II, Cod. Vat. Gr. 1613 The historians Eusebius, Philostorgius and Theodore Anagnostes provide ample information on the "magnificent and wondrous" church of the Holy Apostles, originally built by Constantine the Great. Similarly, Procopius and after him a great number of historians and travellers have written on "the splendid" edifice erected by Justinian. Constantine of Rhodes (lOth century) composed a metrical "Description of the building of theApostles" , dedicating this long poem to Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus, and Nicholas Mesarites (12th century) has given a description, which is however incomplete.
