SEXUAL REALITY AND HOW WE DISMISS IT Paper presented as part of Panel: "What is Sex For?", Annual meeting, American Association of the Advancement of Science, S.F. State University, November, 1984.
THE BIOLOGICAL-ROMANTIC MYSTIQUE
In the play Harvey , Elwood P. Dowd declares that he struggled with reality all his life and finally overcame it. I think he was speaking for all of us. How we overcome sexual reality is a case in point.
Let's begin with the question facing our panel: What is sex for? The first answer that most people give is that sex is for procreation. Now suppose that we were to point out the unreality of this answer by suggesting that if the purpose of sex was procreation there would be no way to account for our experience of year 'round estrus since procreation is efficiently accomplished in infrahuman species even when limited to one month out of the year. (Homosexuality, if cited as an example of nonprocreative sex, would only be dismissed as an aberration.)
This would cause our respondents no difficulty, of course. They would simply reply (much as they would about homosexuality) that these are

American Theories of Polygenesis
Introduction
Monogenesis, as the term was understood by natural historians in the middle of the nineteenth century, was the theory that all human beings shared the same origin. Polygenesis, by contrast, was the theory that at least some of the races had a separate origin. Because the Bible had been almost universally understood as maintaining that all human beings were descended from a single pair, there had been few upholders of polygenesis in Christian Europe throughout most of its history. However, in the middle of the nineteenth century polygenesis became widespread, particularly in the United States. Part of the reason for this was the problem of reconciling the biblical account with certain new pieces of historical and scientific evidence. Prae-Adamitae was published in 1655, but within a year of publication, he was forced to recant. However, the persistence of his ideas is shown by the fact that Matthew Hale thought it necessary to address them in 1677 in his The Primitive Origination of Mankind, Considered and Examined According to the Light of Nature

A Guided Tour of Morningside Campus
The text is adapted from The Tourguide Handbook produced by the Columbia Undergraduate Admissions Office As a custodian of the Western intellectual tradition and a leader in addressing the issues of the moment, Columbia continues to make important contributions to American life through the teaching and research conducted within its 15 schools and 69 departments.
A Guided Tour of Morningside Campus
The following is an informal tour around Columbia's Morningside Campus starting at Low Library, continuing to Hamilton Hall the South East side of campus, Butler Library, the South West side of campus and then up again for the Northern end. Explanations for building names are given, as well as short histories and some lesser known Columbia trivia.
Low Memorial Library
This was the first academic building erected on the Morningside campus. It was the gift of President Seth Low, in memory of his father, Abiel Abbot Low, who was a wealthy merchant in the China tea trade. Begun in 1895 and completed in 1897, it is the largest all-granite, domed structure in North America (105.5 feet high and 70 feet across) and was once voted one of the ten most handsome buildings in North America by a jury of leading architects. Now the main administration building of the University, Low was originally built as the main University Library.

Core History: "the insistent problems of the present"
Taken From An Oasis of Order by Timothy Cross
Previous
Next Contents
It all started quietly enough. On 20 January 1919 the faculty of Columbia College resolved that "the requirement in Philosophy A and History A be replaced by a course in Contemporary Civilization." Curricular decisions usually don't reverberate beyond the college campus where they're implemented, and the founders had no idea that they were creating what has been described as "probably the most famous course ever in the American curriculum." And this committee in turn enlisted the aid of several younger faculty members and set about writing a syllabus to be used the following fall. What was this new course in contemporary civilization? How was it going to provide wisdom and a new understanding? Butler was closest to the mark when he spoke of "the realities of life," for the phrase most commonly used - in Columbia College announcements, in the course's syllabus, in descriptions of the course to outsiders, by the course's teachers - was that CC, as the course quickly came to be abbreviated, was an attempt to deal with "the insistent problems of the present."

History PREFACE The compiling of the following pages has been a labor of love. The unveiling and dedication on the battlefield of Gettysburg, July 3, 1913, of the memorial erected in honor of Major-General Wells and officers and men of the First Vermont Cavalry, on the confederate Avenue, in front of Round Top, was an occasion never to be forgotten by all who were present, men of the North, and men of the South. This charge of the First Vermont Cavalry was so swallowed up in the multitudinous incidents of the great battle that few have followed it as it deserves. I am prod to say that Vermont, however, remembers well her gallant sons in this soul-stirring feat, and that by a happy though the Legislature of the state made an appropriation for a monument to be erected near the spot from which the regiment started upon its memorable charge. /s/ N. Nelson Jackson

An additional plat adjoining the Bushman tract, containing 1.09 acres, will be required to be purchased to complete said avenue, and belongs to C. C. History of Undergraduate Mathematics in America At the HUMA meeting, we will have two book displays. The first will be held in the West Point Room on the fourth floor of the library (the building is across the street from Thayer Hall; enter via the "gun door," so named because it is bracketed by the first cannon fired during the Civil war, and the last). A few of the books below were chosen for their rarity, beauty, and mathematical significance, but most of them were chosen because of the impact they have had on undergraduate education. You can access the West Point library on the web by
