However he grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana where he attended the Arsenal Technical High School. After high school he studied at the University of Wisconsin where he received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. During college Aiken worked for the Madison Gas Company; after graduation he was promoted to chief engineer there.
In 1935 Aiken decided to return to school. In 1939 he received a Ph.D. from Harvard University. It was while working on his doctoral thesis in physics that Aiken began to think about constructing a machine to help with the more tedious of calculations. Aiken began to talk about his idea and to do some research into what could be done. With some help from colleagues at the university, Aiken succeeded in convincing IBM to fund his project.
The idea was to build an electromachanic machine that could perform mathematical operations quickly and efficiently and allow a person to spend more time thinking instead of laboring over tedious calculations. IBM was to build the machine with Aiken acting as head of the construction team and donate it to Harvard with the requirement that IBM would get the credit for building it. The constructing team was to use machine components that IBM already had in existence.

Howard Hathaway Aiken
Born: 9 March 1900 in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
Died:14 March 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA In 1937, electrical engineer and physicist, Howard H. Aiken of Harvard University conceived the idea of wiring together the components of a unit record system and controlling them by a roll of paper punched tape. While he completed his doctorate at Harvard, Aiken continued the computer's development with the assistance of IBM and its engineers until 1944. That year he unveiled the Harvard Mark I. It was not an electronic computer, but an elctro-mechanical computer in which mechanical registers were used to store numbers. Grace Hopper worked with Aiken from 1944 on the Mark I computer which was used by the US navy for gunnery and ballistics calculations. Aiken completed the Mark II, a completely electronic computer, in 1947. He published articles on electronics and switching theory. References:

That's when he began work on the Harvard Mark II. This system, which employed an electrical memory, was finished in 1947. One important advance in the second system was the concept of 'constants' - fixed values which are referenced by the program the machine is running. This was a new concept in programming at the time, but it is taken for granted in today's programming languages.

July-September 1998 (Vol. 20, No. 3) p p. 27-32 Howard Aiken on the Number of Computers Needed for the Nation I. Bernard  Cohen According to a remark by Howard Aiken, one that is often quoted, only a very small number of computers would be needed to serve the needs of the whole world, perhaps a dozen, with eight or 10 for the United States. Sometimes the number is given as six or even two or three. As we shall see, documentary evidence confirms that Aiken did, indeed, once say that one or two "computers" would suffice, but he was referring to a special kind of use and not to all possible needs for computer power in every aspect of activity in the whole of the United States. The context shows that his remark did not have the general context that may be supposed and that it was not, therefore, as incorrect as might at first appear. Report on Howard Aiken
The Creator of the ASCC Howard Aiken was the original founder of the ASCC computer, Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator. It carried out five operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and references to previous results. He developed this type of computer with IBM engineers. He was a doctorate at Harvard University 1939. When he became an instructor in the Department of Physics in Harvard he was beginning to get the idea to build a large computer. The ASCC was powered by electricity and weighed 35 tons. To connect everything Howard and the IBM engineers had to use 500 miles of wire and could compute 23 figures. The ASCC had 72 storage units to do all its functions. All the functions took much longer than they do today. Single addition took about 6 seconds while division took 12 seconds. These operations would take only about less than a second or even a second at the most today. Also the computer was controlled by a series of punch cards. The ASCC was completed at the IBM laboratories in 1943, it was moved to Harvard in 1944 and was used. The ASCC was later named the Harvard Mark 1. Howard Aiken completed the Harvard Mark 2 which was completely electronic, in 1947. He continued working on more computers like the Harvard Mark 3 and 4 until 1952. He worked on computer theories as well as working on computers.
