John Couch Adams showed great mathematical ability while at school, and he became known for his considerable abilities for accurate numerical calculations. During this period he first became interested in astronomy and, by the age of 16, he had worked out when an annular eclipse of the Sun would be visible in Lidcot. His brother lived at Lidcot, which is near Launceston about 10Km from where John was born. Adams was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. He began his undergraduate course in October 1839 and graduated Senior Wrangler four years later. He is said to have been awarded double the marks of the Second Wrangler which, if true, is an incredible achievement. Also in 1843 he became first Smith's Prizeman and he became a Fellow of Pembroke College. He was to hold this Fellowship, in addition to other posts, until his death. In 1841, while still an undergraduate, he decided to investigate

Can you believe it? Couch is one of over 300 mathematicians that have a lunar crater named after them. John Couch Adams made many other contributions to our knowledge of astronomy. For example, he studied the Leonid meteor shower and correctly concluded that the shower was the result of a comet passing close to Earth once a year. Adams was a mathematics professor at Cambridge and eventually became director of the Cambridge Observatory. He refused a knighthood offered by Queen Victoria to honor him for his accomplishments. Adams did not want the extra attention nor did he feel he had the money to maintain the lifestyle of a knight. He died in 1892 in Cambridge. Adams and his wife are buried under a 70 foot high granite cross in Cambridge. Three years after his death, he was honored with a memorial tablet in Westminster Abbey. The tablet is near the tablet that honors Sir Isaac Newton, another brilliant English mathematician.

John Couch Adams
June 5 1819 - Jan 21 1892
Born Laneast, England. Died Cambridge, England.
Adams was an astronomer and mathematician who, at the age of 24, was the first person to predict the position of a planet beyond Uranus. Adams was educated at Cambridge and became a fellow. While an undergraduate he decided to investigate 'the irregularities of the motion of Uranus...in order to find out whether they may be attributed to the action of an undiscovered planet beyond it'. In September 1845 Adams gave accurate information on the position of the new planet to James Challis, director of the Cambridge Observatory. Action was not taken by Cambridge and Urbain Leverrier's later prediction was published before Adams's and led directly to the discovery of Neptune on September 23, 1846 by the Berlin Observatory. Adams became Regius Professor of Mathematics at St Andrews in 1858 and Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at Cambridge in 1859. He was named director of the Cambridge Observatory in 1861. Adams's made many other contributions to astronomy, notably his studies of the Leonid meteor shower (1866), his description of the motion of the Moon which was more accurate than that of

John Couch Adams John was a very intelligent child. He was best known for his ability of accurate numerical calculations. During this time he became interested in astronomy and by the age of 16, he figured out when andeclipse of the sun would be visible in Lidcot. As time went on John was labeled as an English astronomer and mathematician. In 1841, at the age of 24, while still in Collage, he decided to investigate the strange motions of Uranus....in order to find out if an undiscovered planet was the cause of them. And he was right. After Johann Gottfried Galle confirmed the existence of Neptune based on calculations done by Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier, the two became embroiled in a dispute over priority. Adams spent much of his time studying the complex problem of the motion of the Moon and the terrestrial magnetism. Adams will be remembered most for his role in the co-discovery of Neptune.

The History of its discovery.

John Couch Adams and the discovery of Neptune
Fifty years ago, in October 1946, I came up to John's wrestling with the problem of whether to read Natural Sciences or Mathematics. I was much attracted by Mathematics which offered Astronomy as an option in the final year, and unfortunately at that time it was possible to do only half-subject Mathematics in Natural Sciences Part I. In the event, however, I decided on Natural Sciences, more particularly Physics in Part II. On the first day of the Michaelmas Term 1946 a lecture was given by the Astronomer Royal, Sir Harold Spencer Jones, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Discovery of Neptune. Since John Couch Adams, the British astronomer involved in the discovery, was a Johnian, I decided to have a look at his papers in the College Library and write an account of what happened to mark the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the discovery. John Adams was born in 1819 in Cornwall, of farming stock, and from an early age confounded his family and teachers with his mathematical ability. He earned a place at St John's and was awarded a Scholarship. At the end of his undergraduate studies in 1843 he was Senior Wrangler, with more than twice the marks of the Second Wrangler. Despite this success he was always modest, retiring and self-effacing, but always sincere and ready to help people. He had become interested in the problem of Uranus in 1841 when he read a report on Astronomy by the Astronomer Royal Sir George Airy. The five planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn had been observed for centuries, distinguished from stars because they moved relatively to the stars from night to night. Through a telescope each planet was seen as a small disc, whereas a star was a point. Johannes Kepler had shown that each planet orbited the Sun in an ellipse - one of his laws - and Sir Isaac Newton explained these laws by the Inverse Square Law of Gravitation (doubling the distance between two bodies divides by four the gravitational force of attraction).

The Scientific Papers of John Couch Adams, 4to, vol. i. (1896), and vol. ii. (1900), edited by William Grylls Adams and Ralph Allen Sampson, with a memoir by Dr J. W. L. Glaisher, were published by the Cambridge University Press. The first volume contains his previously published writings; the second those left in manuscript, including the substance of his lectures on the Lunar Theory. A collection, virtually complete, of Adams's papers regarding the discovery of Neptune was presented by Mrs Adams to the library of St John's College. Made by Adams, maker to HRH Prince Albert, 36 Lombard Street, London. Number 3294. Brass mechanism in mahogany box with brass fittings. Base 17cm square, height 18cm. William Swan was Professor of Natural Philosophy in the United College of St. Andrews University from 1859 to 1880. In 1880 he compiled an extensive catalogue listing all the scientific equipment in the department, including the historic instruments. Swan's catalogue entries are meticulous, and also reveal a dry sense of humour: for example, he describes a wooden clock as, "ferociously coarse and useless." Some of the instruments he catalogued still exist today in the School of Physics and Astronomy, such as the armilliary sphere, Gregorian telescope and astrolabes. Swan's main passion was optics, especially spectroscopy. He is credited with inventing the `Swan Spectrometer', which is little known today, although Swan published numerous articles on the subject. He was awarded the Royal Scottish Society of Arts Gold Medal for his work in November 1843. As was the case with many Victorian gentlemen, Swan was interested in many diverse topics and not just his chosen speciality. From the comments in his catalogue, and his correspondence with other scientists, he appears to have been an inquisitive, witty and intelligent character, who was always keen to learn more.
