The broad philosophy of the work is to concentrate on the development of fundamental principles, although such areas of research are often identified from particular applications. As a result of this approach, the results of a number of research projects have been exploited commercially either by established companies or by companies established specifically for the purpose. Current research themes include:
Audio and Image processing and coding Image segmentation Nonstationary, nonlinear, non-gaussian signal processing. Blind signal separation and deconvolution Support vector machines for signal classification and estimation Bayesian statistical methods Numerical MCMC methods Adaptive filtering Analysis of Audio and Music DNA sequence analysis Complex wavelet transforms Image watermarking Computer vision and optical motion capture Modelling and tracking articulated human motion Applications of geometric algebra in engineering Cambridge Music Processing Colloquium

The Role of Signal Processing
It is news to many that there is a specific engineering field devoted to the math-based analysis of signals and sensor data. Signal processing is the use of mathematical and statistical techniques to extract useful information from noisy sensor data. It has evolved from algorithms and tools useful in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, statistics, physics, and mathematics. The goal is to answer questions about the state of a system based on measured signals. What do we mean by a signal? Any sequence of measurements collected over time may be considered a signal. These include recordings from microphones, accelerometers, and strain gauges. Temperature readings, stock quotes, and radiation counts are also signals which can be analyzed. For a signal to be useful, it must contain the desired information. In many cases, that information will be corrupted by noise and interference. The power of signal processing lies in its ability to provide information in the presence of undesirable or interfering phenomenon.
