POSTURE...
In recent years, ergonomists have attempted to define postures which minimize unnecessary static work and reduce the forces acting on the body. All of us could significantly reduce our risk of injury if we could adhere to the following ergonomic principles: 1. All work activities should permit the worker to adopt several different, but equally healthy and safe postures 2. Where muscular force has to be exerted it should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available. 3. Work activities should be performed with the joints at about mid-point of their range of movement. This applies particularly to the head, trunk, and upper limbs. (Cortlett, 1983) THE PROBLEM...
Here, however, we arrive at a problem: In order to put these recommendations into practice, a person would have to be a skilled observer of his or her own joint and muscle functioning and would have to be able to change his or her posture to a healthier one at will. No one develops this sort of highly refined sensory awareness without special training. Therefore, in order to derive the benefits of ergonomic research, we must learn how to observe our bodies in a new way.* A SOLUTION...

Workstation Ergonomics - material obtained from Workcover NSW, Feb 2001 Workstation Adjustment Chair
  • Is the chair easily adjusted from a seated position? Can the user get close to the workstation without impediment? (ie desktop thin, chair arms aren't in the way and there is clear leg room) Is the seat height adjusted with the users' thighs parallel or slightly inclined downwards to the floor? Is the backrest height adjusted to fit the small of the users' back and adequately support the spine? Is the backrest angle adjusted for the user to sit upright whilst keying?
Desk
  • Are the users forearms parallel to the floor or angled slightly downward? Is the desk height adjustable? if YES is the desk easily adjustable? if NO has the user been provided with a footrest? Is the footrest wide enough for both feet?
Screen
  • When sitting tall and looking straight ahead, is the user looking at the top edge of the screen? Is the screen at a comfortable reading distance? Are all the characters in the display easily legible and is the image stable?

Netfirms Web Hosting Chairs, Posture, Ergonomics and the Alexander Technique by Robert Rickover As a teacher of the Alexander Technique(1), I am frequently asked about chairs by my students, and about which designs are best. Some have been given very expensive, ergonomically designed chairs at work and wonder if they are actually any better than ordinary ones. Others complain about their car seats, or about the curved plastic chairs often found in waiting rooms and in many airport lounges. our body that sits in a chair, and if we want to improve our comfort and health, our primary attention must be directed at improving our own functioning - that is, what we do with our body when we sit. The Alexander Technique is a very powerful method of learning to do just that. It teaches you ways to direct your body so that you can have an easy upright posture in virtually any sitting situation you find yourself in. I learned that these new seats were, in fact, designed by ergonomists and that the way they went about their design was to match the chair to posture of the average rider. But the average rider has pretty poor sitting posture to begin with so these chairs were simply reinforcing that prevailing pattern.

Search IEA:
In August 2000, the IEA Council adopted an official definition of ergonomics as shown below: The Discipline of Ergonomics Ergonomics (or human factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance. Ergonomists contribute to the design and evaluation of tasks, jobs, products, environments and systems in order to make them compatible with the needs, abilities and limitations of people. Domains of specialization Derived from the Greek ergon (work) and nomos (laws) to denote the science of work, ergonomics is a systems-oriented discipline which now extends across all aspects of human activity. Practicing ergonomists must have a broad understanding of the full scope of the discipline. That is, ergonomics promotes a holistic approach in which considerations of physical, cognitive, social, organizational, environmental and other relevant factors are taken into account. Ergonomists often work in particular economic sectors or application domains. Application domains are not mutually exclusive and they evolve constantly; new ones are created and old ones take on new perspectives. There exist domains of specialization within the discipline, which represent deeper competencies in specific human attributes or characteristics of human interaction.
