/ owned by Bridget Olsen Scolex (as in INSPECTOR GADGET) likes Acoelomates because :
I'm named for an acoelomate body part! Rajiv likes Pseudocoelomates because :
Grooovy, Millie! And since you're a deuterostome (I presume), you had a place for your kind of pets even before you could breathe! Anna Macule likes Pseudocoelomates because :
Gastrotrichs, Kinorhynchs, Rotifers, and Loriciferans are so groovy, man. Love 'em. Kinorhynchs even look kinda like Coke Bottles. They're the real thing! Liz likes Pseudocoelomates because :
Anguillula is my favorite animal. Where it lives is so amazing! What an acid trip!
Millie likes Pseudocoelomates because :
As a child I was never allowed officially to have any pets. So the pinworms that came out of my poophole were my best companions

15 SeptemberMulticellularity What are the limitations on cells size for unicellular organisms? Partially related to cell processes such as
  • Diffusionmovement of a substance from area of higher concentration to lower
Osmosis-movement of water through a selectively semi-permeable membrane from area of higher concentration to lower concentration
  • Partially related to consumption and being consumed

Multicellularity as a compromise between large size and the problems associated with diffusion and osmosis. With multicellularity can come a division of labor

Labs:
Platyzoan animals
Again this week there is a fair bit of material that we need to cover, especially since we're actually looking at a whole Infrakingdom The platyzoa. While initially these are the spiralian animals that didn't fall into the lophotrochozoa and ecdysozoa it's becoming clear that this may actually be a natural assemblage that's unified by being acoelomate triploblasts. Most prominant of the bunch are the Platyheliminthes and we'll spend most of our time in the lab looking at them. Last year you had a chance to examine Dugesia , and Chlonorchis and a tapeworm, this year we add a few more to round things out. Bdelloura is this years example of a turbellarian and you'll see a lot more of the internal features with this specimen than you did with Dugesia . We've also got the ectoparasitic monogenean and completely new trematodes for you to look at. We round out our look at the flatworms with our old friend the tapeworm. One of the reasons for the success of the phylum is that they have left the free living life and are now mostly parasites. We refer to Platyhelminthes as being preadapted for parasitism and you'll want to find as many examples of this in the specimens that you will be looking at. Other platyzoans are available either as live preps or prepared microscope slides. These include Gastrotrichs, Acanthocephala and Rotifers.

5. simplest excretory and circulatory system
mesenchyme (paranchyma)
8. Three phyla are:
a. platyhelminthes
b. nemertea
c. Gnathostomulida
Main characteristics:
1. triploblastic
2. bilateral symmetry
3. flat dorsoventrally 4. tegument 5. true muscles 6. acoelomate 7. incomplete digestive system in some; i.e. gastrovascular type absent 8. some have eye spots 9. flame cells or protonephridia 10. mostly monoecious 11. class Turbellaria mostly free living
Phylum Platyhelminthes:
- paranchyma -msot monogenea are ectoparasitic -indirect and direct life cycle -final host is vertebrates in most cases -Triploblastic, Cniderians were not -body fluid moves by muscylar contraction
Class Turbellaria:
-free-living, mostly marines -Planarians -epidermis ciliated on ventral side -mouth on ventral side, no anus -simple life cycle -spiral cleavage -gastrodermis has phagocytes -they are carnivorous -metabolic waste by diffusion thru the body wall -Rhabdite cells -parenchyma cells -protonephridia = flame bulbs -Planaria excrete water out, why?
