About the FWBO (Friends of the Western Buddhist Order)
The FWBO is a Buddhist movement founded in London in 1967. It seeks to create all of the conditions needed for the effective practice of Buddhism in modern society, and has grown into a varied and energetic tradition of practice. The FWBO was founded by Urgyen Sangharakshita, an Englishman who had returned to the West from Asia with twenty years experience as a Buddhist monk and scholar. While in Asia he studied under teachers of the Theravada, Chinese Ch'an, and Tibetan Vajrayana traditions. His understanding of the teachings of Buddhism and his solid grounding in Western culture have enabled him to present a body of teachings that are particularly suited to Western practitioners. At the heart of the FWBO is the Western Buddhist Order (WBO), an association of more than 1000 men and women who have formally committed themselves to wholeheartedly pursuing their own spiritual development and facilitating that of others. Order members, Mitras (people who are deepening their contact with Buddhism and the Order), and Friends (those who participate in FWBO activities but have made no formal commitment to practicing the Dharma within the context of the FWBO) often live, work, and practice together - some of them running public centers, some working in team-based right livelihood businesses, and many living in Buddhist residential communities. The FWBO is a remarkably diverse organization, including people of many nationalities, from all walks of life, and living a wide range of lifestyles, both lay and monastic. Practice within the FWBO does not require a monastic lifestyle, and many Order members, Mitras, and Friends are married or have children. The essence of membership of the Order is simply a commitment to put Buddhist principles into action in ones life.

Introduction
The society covers all forms of Buddhism, offering both an introduction without commitment and an opportunity for involvement by the more serious. There is a weekly meditation class and a discussion group. The meditation class is for beginners. Its secular techniques for improved mindfulness are as valid for someone wishing to improve their concentration span as for a person committed to the search for enlightenment. The discussion group is an informal meeting where aspects of Buddhism and its philosophy are studied. Both events are led by a qualified member of the Western Buddhist Order. There will also be other occasional events, including all day meditation retreats, talks and trips. So if you're just hoping to improve your concentration, have an interest in Buddhism or are searching for a more spiritual side to your life, we'll welcome you wholeheartedly to any of our events!
Buddhism
Buddhism is a non-theistic philosophy. It is essentially a means to psychological and spiritual wholeness. In its own language, Buddhism is the 'way to Enlightenment'. In more modern terms it is the instrument of the Higher Evolution of mankind, that is to say, the instrument of the evolution of each individual human being from an unenlightened condition to the condition of Supreme Enlightenment (Perfect Peace of Mind, Freedom, Insight, Wisdom and Compassion).

The Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) is a Buddhist movement founded in London in 1967. It seeks to create the conditions needed for the effective practice of Buddhism in modern society. It has grown into a varied and energetic tradition of practice, and communal institutions.
The Western Buddhist Order, around which the FWBO is focused, is a spiritual community of men and women who have committed themselves to following the Buddhist path to Enlightenment. Order members have made that commitment - traditionally known as going for Refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha - the central point of their lives. In particular, they have chosen to make the WBO the context in which they are trying to gain Enlightenment.
Having returned to England in the mid-1960s, FWBO founder Sangharakshita saw the need for a new Buddhist movement that was faithful to the values and teachings of the Buddhist tradition and was relevant to the conditions of the modern world. This meant avoiding the twin dangers of transplantation and adaptation. Sangharakshita believed it would be a mistake to try to practise an Asian form of Buddhism in the very different conditions he now found himself. At the same time he did not want to water Buddhism down to suit modern tastes. Instead he attempted to base the new movement on the core teachings that underlie all the schools of Buddhism, and to apply their principles in the modern world.

About Urgyen Sangharakshita
center program meditation buddhism ... links Sangharakshita, who founded the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order in 1967, is one of the founding fathers of Western Buddhism. He was born Dennis Lingwood in South London, 1925 and had a Church of England upbringing, but he developed an interest in the cultures and philosophies of the East early on. He realised he was a Buddhist at the age of sixteen, after reading The Diamond Sutra. He became involved in London’s germinal Buddhist world in wartime Britain, and started to explore the faith through study and practice. Conscription in the Second World War took him to Sri Lanka, and after the war he stayed on in India. For a while he lived as a wandering mendicant, and later he was ordained as the Theravadin Buddhist monk Sangharakshita (‘protected by the spiritual community'). Sangharakshita lived for many years in Kalimpong where he encountered many leading teachers from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, so he had the opportunity to study for some years under leading teachers from the major Buddhist traditions. He went on to teach and write extensively, and he is now the author of over forty books. Most of these are expositions of the Buddhist tradition, but he has also published a large amount of poetry and several volumes of memoirs, as well as works on aspects of western culture and the arts from a Buddhist perspective. Sangharakshita played a key part in the revival of Buddhism in India, particularly through his work among the ex-Untouchables, and he has also been concerned throughout his life with issues of social reform. After twenty years in India, he returned to England to establish the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order in 1967 (called Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha Sahayak Gana, or TBMSG, in India) and the Western Buddhist Order in 1968.
