From the beginning the blind, the deaf and the lame were excluded from the church, but it was the Lord's ministry which raised these touchables to a place of dignity among the people. Indeed, Jesus had to cleanse the temple before the blind and the lame could enter. The religious authorities responded to their inclusion with anger. (Matthew 21:12-17) A visit to one of our best-loved cathedrals, three years ago, resulted in my friend being asked on my behalf: "Does he take Holy Communion?" I was attending the ordination of a fellow ordinand! I wonder, at the start of the 21st Century, are we any further forward? I pose this question because I have been approached by Affirming Catholicism's Common Justice Sub-Committee to express my own disappointment that the biannual Conference is again due to be held at St Chad's College, Durham. I am disappointed because, very sadly, St Chad's in 2001 was largely inaccessible to people with disabilities. In fact, the Conference was impossible for a wheelchair user to negotiate. As a wheelchair user myself I know that participation in the Conference for people in similar positions is unlikely to be workable - a real pity when Affirming Catholicism's conferences are of a high standard with such reputable and well-known speakers.

Roman Catholicism
Is It A Cult?*
To many Christians, the Roman Catholic Church is an enigma a mysterious ecclesiastical system of laws, rituals, and religious orders. For centuries there have been angry denouncements from Roman Catholics against Protestantism for the schism created by the Reformation, and from Protestants against Roman Catholicism for its theological errors and its claim to be the only one true church.
Out of this controversy, charges have arisen that Roman Catholicism is not truly Christian, but is in fact, the largest and oldest "Christian" cult in the world.
The Christian Research Institute , (CRI), founded by the late Dr. Walter Martin , is regarded by many as the foremost authority on cults and the occult. They also see themselves as experts on what constitutes Biblical theology. CRI has produced position papers on Roman Catholicism, addressing some of the doctrines with which they are in disagreement. They have stopped short, however, of acknowledging Roman Catholicism as a cult. They are, in fact, adamant in their defense of Roman Catholicism as an orthodox Christian religion. In this regard, they have come against others for their insistence that Roman Catholicism meets the criteria of a cult.
That there are grave problems with many Roman Catholic doctrines and interpretations of Scripture, no knowledgeable non-Catholic would dispute. But to what degree does Roman Catholicism present a danger to the purity of Biblical truth? Are their teachings, practices, and liturgy commiserate with cultism? Or are they truly Christian, differing only in minor interpretations and applications? To answer these questions, it is necessary to define just what constitutes a cult.

WAR IN HEAVEN:
Rome versus Jerusalem Revelation 12:1: And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: Revelation 21:10: And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 21:11: Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; 21:12: And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 21:13: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. 21:14: And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Revelation 17:3: So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 17:4: And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 17:5: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 17:6: And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

PAGAN SUN WORSHIP AND CATHOLICISM
THE MONSTRANCE and the WAFER GOD
Exo 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Exo 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: ... Note that the commandment of God forbids making and bowing down to images. Among pagans, perhaps the most common form of idolatry is sun worship, and the above prohibition would clearly exclude bowing down before images of the sun or moon (things in the heaven above). But then God gets even more explicit: Deu 17:2 If there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant,
Deu 17:3 And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;
Deu 17:4 And it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and inquired diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel:

    Welcome to Orthodoxy and Catholicism: A Comprehensive Guide to Issues and Materials. On this site I have attempted to bring together all the material I could find about relations between the Catholic and Orthodox churches. You will find overviews of all the issues that separate the two sides, church documents, discussion groups, news and so forth. There are currently over 200 links I have tried to be impartial in every way I can think of. My occasional topic introductions attempt to reproduce what a committee of well-meaning experts from both sides would agree to. In describing the links I have attempted to keep my religious opinions separate from my duty to find and describe the material. Occasionally I describe something as "poorly-written" or "tedious." These are not religious mistakes. Very occasionally I describe someting as "biased," when, for example, an author says that the other side believes something that no member of that side would agree to. I am not opposed to vigorous disagreement. I have, I am sure, missed important pages and made factual mistakes, particularly in categorization. Email and I will amend.

The present book is a record of that symposium.
    Formal papers on the nature of interreligious dialogue, the role of social praxis in religion, and the relationship between faith and institutional structures make up the core of the book. Each paper is followed by an opening comment and an extended discussion, which is presented here in full. "The publication of this book represents a profound advance in mutual understanding between Catholicism and Soka Gakkai... Nothing could be more satisfying than it if were also to assist others in rethinking the raison d'être of religion in modern society and the contribution it can make to solving the problems of today's world.”

Affirming Catholicism began with a conference on Saturday 9 June, 1990, at St. Alban's church, Holborn - just outside the City of London. The clarion call from Rowan Williams, now Archbishop of Wales and nominee for the next Archbishop of Canterbury, was for Anglo-Catholics to affirm tradition 'in its proper and fullest sense', not as a 'lifeboat in which to escape the present' but as 'a crucible in which the experiment of Christian life is constantly tested'.
