    British Methodist Episcopal Church
The church was the most important institution in most Black communities. Church leaders were often spokespersons to the larger community. The denominations were usually Baptist or Methodist. Baptist congregations encouraged a democratic participation by the election of their ministers. Black Methodists, coldly received in White congregations, turned to the African Methodist Episcopal church, which entered the colony from the United States in 1838 and by 1840 had organized an Upper Canada Conference. The Conference was instrumental in supplying the church with ministers and sending bishops occasionally to oversee its work. In 1856, feelings arose that reforms had to take place, and an independent British Methodist Episcopal Church was formed. Although seldom mentioned in the press, the British Methodist Episcopal congregation (or "Colored Methodists" as they were usually called) had an interesting history. The original congregation had been made up of escaped slaves, but after the America Civil War, a considerable number of immigrants from other areas appear to have joined the original group. The Town of Guelph Directory for 1873 shows their "place of worship on Market Street and entered from Essex Street. Pastor Rev. Johnson. Trustees Louis Bolden, William Thomas, Eli Buckner".

    Author: Mary Alward
Published on: February 2, 2002 In 1793, the Upper Canada Act Against Slavery was passed. The Act was inspired by Governor J. G. Simcoe and made Upper Canada (now Ontario) the first British Colony to legislate against slavery. Slavery had been the norm in Upper Canada for people of African ancestry since the beginning of the 17th Century. The Act did not free existing slaves, but did prohibit the import and assured that the children of slaves would be freed when they reached the age of twenty-five years. After the Act was passed, slavery in the colonies declined. In 1833, the Imperial Act, which abolished slavery in all British Territories was passed, though it didn't become law until 1834. Sandwich First Baptist Church In present day Windsor, Ontario stands the Sandwich First Baptist Church. It is one of the oldest Black Baptist churches that have survived the Underground Railroad era in Canada. In the early 1800's, Sandwich was a popular spot for escaped slaves who had just crossed the Detroit River from the U.S. into Canada. Slaves were able to maintain ties with family in the U.S. from both Sandwich and nearby Amherstburg. These Black communities flourished.

Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe Inspired by the abolitionist sentiment emerging in the late 18th century, Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe made Upper Canada the first British territory to legislate against slavery, which had defined the conditions of life for most people of African ancestry in Canada since the early 17th century. The Act of 1793 did not free a single slave, but prevented their importation and freed the future children of slaves at age twenty-five. Faced with growing opposition in the colonies, slavery declined. The Imperial Act of 1833 finally abolished slavery in the British territories in 1834.

(to appear in HarperCollins' "Religion in Canada ") The Methodist Tradition in Canada The Methodist tradition arose chiefly from the activity of John Wesley (1703-1791), born to Samuel Wesley and Susanna Annesley, Dissenters in the Puritan mould who affiliated with the Church of England in their youth. John was nurtured in Anglicanism, was ordained priest and remained a life-long member of it. At Oxford University he, together with several others, formed a group derisively labelled the "Holy Club." It met to encourage study of the classics and the Church Fathers, frequent attendance at Holy Communion, and assistance to the poor and imprisoned. Still groping spiritually after ordination, in 1736 Wesley moved to Georgia hoping that his work among English colonists and aboriginals would imbue him with spiritual vitality. Upon his return to England in the wake of an unsatisfying ministry in the new world he came to the assurance of saving faith and of sins forgiven on May 24, 1738. Thereafter his ministry, formerly a not uncommon 18 th century Anglican blend of mysticism and moralism, was grounded in the Reformation understanding of justification by grace through faith on account of Jesus Christ.

A brief history about Harriet Tubman in St. Catharines, Ontario Canada. (By Rochelle Bush) Harriet Tubman was born a slave in Bucktown, Maryland around 1820. In1849, she escaped bondage to become the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad (UGRR). Neither underground nor a railroad, it was an informal system known for its swift and secret way in which the fugitive slaves escaped. When Harriet escaped from bondage, she first settled in Philadelphia. Here she assisted the famous UGRR stationmaster, William Still at the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. After the passing of the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law Act, Harriet moved her anti-slavery activities further North, to the Promised Land - Canada. She chose the town of St. Catharines in Canada West, as her new location. From this new location, Harriet made at least 11 trips back into the Southern United States to guide hundreds of Freedom Seekers to St.Catharines. She was very successful in her mission and never lost a passenger. Working with black freemen, abolitionists and trusted slaves, Harriet traveled by night, arranging to meet in swamps and forests with small groups of fugitive slaves whom she guided by the North Star. Harriet made Rochester, NY a key stop over on her trips before journeying onto Canada. In Rochester, her passengers received help from the Great Black Emancipator, Frederick Douglass and the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) Church.

Since secrecy was crucial to the survival of the Underground Railroad freedom seekers, few facts were written down, and any personal journals that were kept were often destroyed. But by using a combination of folklore and historic fact, we can reconstruct the story of the Underground Railroad spanning three centuries. Portuguese explorers enslave fifty Amerindian men and women in Labrador or Newfoundland. Mathieu de Costa a "negro servant" to the Governor of Port Royal. Oliver Le Jeune is the first Black to appear in records as being brought directly from Africa and sold as a slave in New France. Upper Canada's first Legislature passed a law prohibiting the introduction of more slaves and for the gradual emancipation of slaves born after that date. First Fugitive Slave Law passed in the U.S. providing for the return of runaway slaves. British parliament abolishes slave trade. U.S. Congress passes law prohibiting importation of slaves. War of 1812 to 1814 between the U.S. and British. Companies of Coloured Soldiers fought in several battles. The Lieutenant Governor offers land in Oro area, Simcoe County to Black veterans of the War of 1812.
