State of the Art in transpersonal psychology, 1996. Charles T. Tart. Toput it bluntly, transpersonal psychology is not very effective.

State of the Art in Transpersonal Psychology, 1996 Charles T. Tart [Presented as part of a panel discussion at the annual meeting of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology, Asilomar California, August 2, 1996.] Abstract [none] Article To help us see what the state of the art in our field is at this time, I want to look at two extremes that clarify where we've been and where we want to go. At the lower extreme, when I went to graduate school in the early 60s, there simply was no Transpersonal Psychology. Behaviorism and psychopathology, Maslow's the first and second forces, were still dominant in psychology and the third force, humanistic, had not yet come along. I had always had an interest in things psychic and spiritual, but the closest areas I could find in orthodox psychology were the study of hypnosis and the study of dreams. Hypnosis was not really quite respectable, although the work of prominent psychologists like Ernest Hilgard at Stanford was starting to make it so. Dreams suddenly became "real" when it was discovered they occurred in conjunction with real physiological changes, brain wave changes. Given the materialistic bias of the times (still too much with us), experience was not "real" until it had a physiological substrate, so the EEG correlates legitimatized the study of dreams, even in their psychological aspects. As to things like mystical experiences, if they were mentioned at all, which was rare, they were relegated to the fringes of psychiatry as being undoubtedly schizophrenic in nature and just showed how sick religions were to be associated with superstitious nonsense like that.

Transpersonal Psychology I have no doubt whatever that most people live, whether physically, intellectually or morally, in a very restricted circle of their potential being. They make use of a very small portion of their possible consciousness... much like a man who, out of his whole bodily organism, should get into a habit of using only his little finger... We all have reservoirs of life to draw upon, of which we do not dream. ~ William James Transpersonal Psychology is concerned with expanding the field of psychological inquiry, beyond the personal intra-psychic realm which previously was the domain of psychology. It is interested in holism, holistic approaches, a humanistic health model and unlimited human possibilities and " a passion for the possible.". Introduction to Transpersonal Psychology By Lisa Meyler / Reality Center The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious... He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead. Albert Einstein What is Transpersonal Psychology? Transpersonal means "beyond the scope of personality", and transpersonal psychology is the psychological branch which encompasses features of the human mind conventional psychology does not put in focus, such as the spiritual, psychic and altered states of consciousness. For those wanting to explore their possibilities as human beings, or those in need of support on the life journey with experiences or phenomena where conventional psychology can not help to shed light, there are clues to be found in the field of transpersonal psychology. According to transpersonal psychology, human growth occurs beyond the scope and limitations of personality, and moves on to larger realms of consciousness. The transpersonal view acknowledges the possibility and potential of all human beings to achieve states which traditionally have been ascribed exclusively to eastern yogis and mystics, and includes the study of experiences and processes in man western science just recently has begun to explore. Within the spiritual teachings of the East and traditional medicine practices, these states have been known for thousands of years and thoroughly examined, such as psychospiritual growth and transformation by awakening and expressions of kundalini in hindu practice, charts of the chakras, the subtle energy centers in yogic techniques, and the science of Chi, the universal life force in traditional Chinese medicine.

What is transpersonal psychology? Transpersonal psychology is the study of the whole human being - intellect, emotions, body, spirit, creativity and community. As a discipline within psychology, it draws upon the earlier psychodynamic, behavioral and humanistic forces but also incorporates the spiritual, peak and transcendent dimensions of experience, as well as interconnections between people, between humans and other species, and the spirit world. Typical areas of study in transpersonal psychology include mind-body relationships, the effects of meditation and various physical disciplines, dreams, transformative experiences, altered states of consciousness, paranormal experience, pre- and peri-natal and post-death experience, nonlocal phenomena and and archetypal determinants of human behavior. Early transpersonalists include C.G. Jung, William James, Roberto Assagioli and Abraham Maslow. Key thinkers in the field currently include Stan Grof, Ken Wilber, Jenny Wade, Angeles Arrien, Charles Tart, Jeanne Achterberg and Frank Lawlis. The field as it currently stands has drawn deeply from a variety of spiritual traditions, including Theravadan, Mahayana and Zen Buddhism, Taoism, Sufism, the Yogic traditions, mystical Christianity and cross-cultural shamanism. Psychospiritual-physical disciplines such as aikido, Tai chi and yoga have influenced the way in which the mind-body-spirit connection is understood. Some transpersonal sites:

Who are you? Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, an adventure marked by trials and triumphs. The better we know our selves, the better we are able to meet the challenges that life tosses at us, and the more we can make of the gifts we encounter along the way. Growth is not easy: growing pains can be excruciating. But do we have any other choice than to heed the call to become who we really, most authentically are? If you have ever wished that there were a roadmap for this journey, one that could point out some of the pits before you fall into them, show you where you are when you are feeling confused, and give you a perspective on where you have been and the options ahead, then you will find the benefits of an astrological reading rewarding. Astrology from a transpersonal psychological perspective is ideally suited for understanding ourselves, where we are and how we fit together with other people. It provides a valuable companion to psychotherapeutic and spiritual growth work, compatible with a wide variety of paths, including twelve-step, eastern and western spiritual practices and the creative life.

Transpersonal Psychology What is Transpersonal? The word ‘transpersonal’ breaks down into two roots: ‘trans’ meaning ‘beyond or through’ and ‘personal’ which is derived from the word ‘persona’ i.e. our identity, mask or personality. The word transpersonal, thus, represents those elements of ourselves which are ‘beyond’ the identity to which we ordinarily associate ourselves. Within the context of how this specific field of psychology defines itself, and in the words of Dr. Beth Hedva: The term ‘transpersonal’ implies that these special elements which are ‘beyond’ our personality, beyond the standard identity of who and what we are, are available for us to use, to help us ‘through’ life. Waiting to be discovered in the core of who and what we are as human beings, is an expanded consciousness not outside of us but rather running ‘through’ each person. In fact, it is frequently the process of going through very human experiences, including a crisis or challenge, that we awaken to unknown strengths, and come to experience greater resources within our being.

Transpersonal Counseling What is Transpersonal Psychology? Transpersonal psychology originated in 1969 when psychologist Abraham Maslow and colleagues concluded that the field of humanistic psychology, which they helped to originate, was itself still too limited in its scope of study of human experience. The transcendent, the 'ultimate', the transpersonal aspect of human nature still was excluded from Western scientific study. The field of transpersonal psychology originated to remedy this. In the words of Anthony Sutich (1969), founding editor of The Journal of Transpersonal Psychology: Transpersonal Psychology is the title given to an emerging force in the psychology field by a group... who are interested in those ultimate human capacities and potentialities that have no systematic place in... behavioristic theory (“first force”), classical psychoanalytic theory (“second force”), or Humanistic psychology (“third force”).... T ranspersonal therapy is also concerned with the psychological processes related to the realization, or making real, of states such as "illumination," "mystical union," "transcendence," and "cosmic unity." It is also concerned with the psychological conditions or psychodynamic processes which directly or indirectly form barriers to these transpersonal realizations.

Fax (512) 327-6043 I pulled away from mainstream addiction work and dropped my identity as an addiction therapist. I needed fresh air and a broader perspective. I couldn't find validation for some of my experiences through the disease lens of addiction: I was in need of a philosophy large enough to explain the newly expanding me. And I found this broader context and support in the field of transpersonal psychology, a field that incorporates both Western and Eastern thought and spiritual traditions from throughout the world. I brought with me my knowledge of addiction, and when I eventually returned to the field of addiction, I brought back the concepts and perspective I had gained while studying(and living!)transpersonal psychology. This new-paradigm psychology focuses on the inner life and the psycho-spiritual realities that reside deep within us: the mystical life. The transpersonal definition of the self includes both the ego and the soul or spirit. It sees as legitimate both the ancient spiritual healing traditions and more contemporary psychological methods.
