abstract
Introduction
Scientific theory is necessarily based on certain philosophical assumptions that define the foundations on which that science is built. The philosophical underpinnings are not always apparent in mature sciences, where the correct philosophical groundwork has been established for so long that alternative philosophies appear too absurd for serious consideration. However in the case of sciences in an embryonic state of development, errors in the philosophical foundations can lead to grave errors in the science built on them. Nowhere is this more true today than in the science of mind and brain. Theories of visual perception can be separated into two classes, depending on their relation to a most significant philosophical distinction, i.e. the distinction between epistemological monism , or naive realism , versus epistemological dualism , or the two- worlds hypothesis . Therefore debates over the relative merits of opposing theories of vision are often at cross-purposes whenever the competing theories are founded on different philosophical assumptions. Such theories cannot be meaningfully compared without discussion of the differences in the underlying philosophy. Curiously this most central issue of vision has not received much attention in recent decades, and failure to understand this most significant issue has led to endless confusion in theories of visual representation. For the naive realist view suggests a very much simplified concept of the nature of the internal representation in vision. In the context of naive realism, introspective examination of the internal representation of vision, i.e. examination of the sensation within one's apparent head while viewing the world, reveals an abstract non-spatial entity as the internal code for external objects. This naive realist perspective therefore makes plausible many of the simplistic models of vision proposed over the centuries, and continues to cause confusion in modern neural network models of visual representation.

Gestalt Psychology Today [
First published in American Psychologist
In 1949, the late Herbert Langfeld gave a lecture in Europe in which he described what appeared to him to be the major trends in American psychology. He also mentioned Gestalt psychology; but he added that the main observations, questions, and principles characteristic of this school had become part of every American psychologist's mental equipment. I was not so optimistic. And, in fact, the very next year attempts were made to explain the molar units in perception by processes which gradually connect neural elements. Soon afterwards, a theory of conditioning was developed, according to which more and more components of a stimulus object are gradually conditioned, and the course of the whole process can be explained in this fashion. Such theories may prove to be very useful, but one can hardly say that, at the time, their authors were greatly influenced by Gestalt psychology. It is for this and similar reasons that a new discussion of old questions seems to me indicated. Wertheimer did not offer a more specific physiological explanation. At the time, this would have been impossible. He next turned to the problem of whether the characteristics of stationary perceptual fields are also influenced by interactions. I need not repeat how he investigated the formation of molar perceptual units, and more particularly of groups of such objects. Patterns which he used for this purpose are now reproduced in many textbooks. They clearly demonstrate that it is

Footnotes are given in square brackets as well, though as hypertext links. Reference numbers are given in round parentheses as hypertext links.) [p. 531]When it was suggested to me that I should write a general critical review of the work recently carried on in the field of perception, I saw an opportunity of introducing to American readers a movement in psychological thought which has developed in Germany during the last ten years. In 1912 Wertheimer stated for the first time the principles of a Gestalt-Theorie which has served as the starting point of a small number of German psychologists. Wherever this new method of thinking and working has come in touch with concrete problems, it has not only showed its efficiency, but has also brought to light startling and important facts, which, without the guidance of this theory, could not so easily have been discovered. The Gestalt-Theorie is more than a theory of perception; it is even more than a mere psychological theory. Yet it

Mach and Ehrenfels:
The Foundations of Gestalt Theory
Kevin Mulligan and Barry Smith

From Barry Smith (ed.), Foundations of Gestalt Theory , Munich and Vienna: Philosophia, 1988, 124-57.
We shall find in what follows that we can come to terms with the implications of the ideas of Mach and Ehrenfels on the perception of what is complex and on the complexity of perception only by paying especially detailed attention to their respective understandings of the notion of non-causal dependence . The clarification of this notion - first effected in a truly systematic way in the writings of these two authors and in those of their contemporaries Brentano and Stumpf - is, we shall argue, one of the great achievements of Austrian philosophy of science. Mach, it will turn out, was unable successfully to incorporate his descriptions of complex perception within his general atomistic framework in no small part because his understanding of dependence was in a quite specific sense too narrow. The great significance of the work of Ehrenfels and of other members of the Brentano tradition from our point of view is that, because they were more faithful to the structures of what is given in perception, they were able to develop a richer theory of dependence, the implications of which were to extend far beyond the narrow sphere of perceptual psychology.
To talk of a 'perception of what is complex' is, from the atomistic perspective which held sway amongst the majority of nineteenth century psychologists, already to employ a form of speech that is illegitimate in the sense that it is not grounded in any underlying reality. There is at most, according to the atomistic psychologist, the possibility of a

    The Gestalt Approach
In contrast to the structuralist approach , the emphasis in the Gestalt approach was on the configuration of the elements, rather than on the elements per se. This emphasis is seen in the credo of the Gestalt psychologists: the whole is different than the sum of the parts Although the Gestaltists did not provide an accurate physiological model of how the visual system processed configuruations, they did come up with a set of "Laws" that help us predict what will be grouped with what and what we will perceive as figure versus ground
    Proximity
Objects that are closer to one another tend to be grouped together.
    Similarity
Objects that are more similar to one another tend to be grouped together. The similarity can be in terms of any dimension: shape, size, colour, or luminance (or motion, as we'll see in Chapter 8).
    Closure
Objects that form closed units tend to be grouped together. Here you see two diamonds (each a closed unit), although when I drew the figure, I drew an "M" on top and a "W" on the bottom.
    Good continuation
Both of the following figures contain one misoriented "T". Notice how much easier it is to find the T when it is not contained in the same "line" as all the other elements. When the T is embedded in a line of elements, all of the elements in that line are grouped together forming a larger unit, which makes it harder to see the T. In the other case, the T stands out on its own, which makes it easier to see. Good continuation says that elements forming continuous lines or curves are grouped together.
