Dictionary of Vocational Psychology Creativity
Traits and skills that influence behavior leading to the construction of original ideas, products, services, or processes that are viewed as desirable and valuable. Eccentricity is best viewed as creativity without the production of outcomes valued by others. Several theories of creativity have been proposed; many have applications in vocational psychology and career interventions. Lowman (1993) offers a chapter (pp. 213-238) on work counseling with the creative. References email vocational psychology

PS 021 Psychology of Art and Creativity (Fall: 3)
This course will satisfy the Social Science Core requirement but does not provide credit toward completion of the Psychology Major.
This course examines how five major fields of psychology have approached the study of art and creativity: clinical/personality psychology, social psychology, neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, and developmental psychology. Thus, this course provides an overview of different areas of psychology as well as an examination of how each of these areas has studied art and creativity. The course focuses on the psychological processes involved in both the creation of and response to art: how these processes operate in the normal adult, how they develop in the child, and how they break down under conditions of psychosis and brain-damage.

    Creativity
Creativity is a special kind of thinking that involves originality and fluency, that breaks away from existing patterns and introduces something new. Creativity may be applied to problem solving, in which case it facilitates the generation of a range of possible solutions, in particular to problems which have no single right answer. Alternatively, and most productively, it may be applied to the process of creating - this means the realising of a held vision, empowered by a tension-resolution system which is put in place by the existing reality being differentiated from a desired vision. So creativity is obviously something that happens frequently in everyday life, rather than something confined to poets, painters and musicians. The creative process appears typically to follow four stages: Preparation - considering the situation is a telic and paratelic process, playing around with ideas and deliberating on their feasibility; then, identifying the problem, issue, theme or vision, finding out what one really wants to achieve, causes a reversal to paratelic excitement (or sometimes telic anxiety, particularly if this is an other-determined should or must). Incubation - the matter sinks into the unconscious; if access to the unconscious is blocked (such as by anxiety) this resource (the processing power of whole brain) may be limited or slow to emerge. Also, within consciousness, current reality is further compared to the envisioned outcome, to energise the incubation and provide more data.

    http://users.aol.com/douglaseby/Page8.html
Creativity and Flow Psychology by Douglas Eby "The best moments usually occur when a person's body or mind is stretched to its limits
in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile." M. Csikszentmihalyi T he author of "Flow - the Psychology of Optimal Experience" and a number of related books, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced me-high chick-sent-me-high) says we can facilitate the conditions for this quality of optimal functioning, and that it may be found in a wide range of careers and activities. For his doctoral thesis on "how visual artists create art" he studied photos taken every three minutes as artists created a painting. He says he was "struck by how deeply they were involved in work, forgetting everything else. That state seemed so intriguing that I started also looking for it in chess players, in rock climbers, in dancers and in musicians. He cautions that many people misunderstand flow as a kind of "spacing out" and seek it in passive leisure activities. "Most people look so much forward to being home, relaxing. Then they get home and don't know what to do. They aren't challenged, so they sit in front of the TV, depressed." [from "He's Going With Flow", LA Times, May 24, 1998] Athletes call flow experience being in the "zone" - an optimal psychological and physiological climate for peak performance. Brazilian soccer player Pele has described days when everything was going right, and feeling "a strange calmness I hadn't experienced in any of the other games. It was a type of euphoria; I felt I could run all day without tiring, that I could dribble through any of their teams or all of them, that I could almost pass through them physically. I felt I could not be hurt."

Cultivating Creativity Many of us are creative in our daily lives, in ways that impact us and those around us. Occasionally, someone makes a discovery or creates a work of art that changes our culture. Children from about age 4 to 7 are usually at a developmental stage where they are bursting with creativity. What makes some of us more creative than others? All human brains are very much alike. However, some of us choose to use our resources, such as free time, in more creative ways. How your creativity manifests itself is based on your personality and life experience, your knowledge, the environment you work and play in, and your culture. You can influence or change these variables to increase your creativity. Everyone has creative potential. The following are suggestions for developing creativity in your life.
    • Read - read anything that sparks your interest. If you have access to a library, use it. There are books on practically every topic you can imagine.

Assignment example: Creativity strategy lesson plan Sensory Awareness (middle school psychology, science lesson)
    Objectives
  • Students will learn how our senses influence how we react to our surroundings. Students will react to the experiences in their journals.
  • Materials
  • Blind fold Nose plugs Ear plugs
  • Procedure
  • Obtain permission from parents and principal to get consent before beginning activity. I usually put a memo out to the teachers so they will know what is going on. Discuss how important our senses are and how they effect our perception of the world. Have students brainstorm as to what it would be like to lose one of these three senses: sight, hearing, or smell. Students doing the sight part will be partnered up with a guide. Those doing the hearing part will be given a buddy for situations like fire drills and going across streets. Students will be able to sign up for the one that they would like to try first. I usually do some balancing if need be. I start by having fifteen students each day being sensory deprived for the entire school day. We then rotate until all students have experienced each form of sensory deprivation. Students journal about their experiences. Comment starters are given to give them some guidance: How did it make you feel, what things were frustrating for you, etc.
