Counseling Psychology Supervised Field Training Coordinated supervised field training in clinical and clinical/research skills is a critical component of the program. Fieldwork activity follows a developmental model consisting of a sequence of nine-month training experiences of increasing complexity and responsibility. Each level of training is designed to accommodate the student's particular level of professional development. Students in the Standard Curriculum complete a minimum of two nine-month supervised field experiences, and those in the Two Plus Curriculum complete three. The specific goals of the fieldwork sequence are:
  • to acquire and practice direct service (assessment and intervention skills)
  • to develop the capacity for critical self-observation and evaluation
  • to observe and conceptualize various aspects of human behavior and interaction
  • to confront and resolve complex issues related to human service delivery
  • to formulate novel theoretical constructs and hypotheses about client systems and social contexts
The three levels of field training are:
  • Pre-practicum: 10 - 15 field site hours/week and 2 classroom hours/week
  • Practicum: 12 - 20 field site hours/week, 3 classroom hours/week and 2 hours/week of "Back-Home" supervision.

Training and Philosophy
Developmental considerations are foremost in our training approach. We recognize the need and necessity for our interns to apply, in an intensive manner, the science of psychology they have learned in their graduate programs and further develop competencies in assessment, diagnosis, intervention and consultation. We strive to provide a supportive environment that allows interns to take on increasing levels of responsibility over the course of the internship, thereby building their confidence along with their competence. As part of this process, interns have the opportunity to observe and collaborate with senior clinicians in a variety of activities ranging from individual and group therapy to consultation and outreach. As the interns and their supervisors become comfortable with the intern's skill level, supervisors function more as available and consultative mentors.

  • Department Information Master's Degree Information D EPARTMENT I NFORMATION The M.S. Psychology degree at Cal Poly has about forty students currently enrolled in the program, in a department with a total enrollment of 550 students. Graduate courses are scheduled so that a full-time student carrying 12-16 units per quarter could complete degree requirements in two years. A more realistic time-table, however, is three years. There are 22 tenure-track faculty in the Psychology and Child Development Department with degrees in a variety of disciplines including Psychology, Education, Child Development, Family Studies, and Human Development. Three faculty coordinate the M.S. program and regularly teach graduate classes. The faculty are diverse in terms of professional degrees, clinical training, ethnic background, and gender. Three of them are licensed psychologists, and have active clinical practices. Our graduate classes are always small and our graduate students receive much individual attention in our on-campus practicum clinic and in community fieldwork sites.

In addition to the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, the program offers Masters degrees in Community/Agency Counseling School Counseling Career Counseling and Development , and Rehabilitation Counseling . http://www.nd.edu/~psych/counseling/clinicaltraining.htm
CLINICAL TRAINING The goal of clinical training in the Counseling/Clinical Program is to prepare students to be effective professionals with a wide variety of clients and client systems and to implement an evidence-based model of effectiveness. We view culture and diversity as critical aspects of our training; moreover in our community placements, we seek to provide service to those who are underserved or marginalized in our society. Although the Counseling Psychology Program focuses on the training of research scholars, in keeping with its scientist-practitioner orientation, focused attention is also given to developing students' clinical skills. Through coursework and practicum experiences, guided by intensive supervision, students develop a framework and the requisite skills for internship and applying the science of psychology to the practice of psychology. Students are expected to develop high quality clinical skills rather than simply accruing a large quantity of hours in practica. In every clinical endeavor we support: a) a multicultural understanding of the client and the therapeutic relationship, b) the implementation and/or adaptation of empirically-supported interventions, and c) the use of designs and methodologies that provide empirical support for the effectiveness of the treatments provided.

GRE What area of psych? Grad School Guides Grad School Forum Applying for graduate school is a much more involved process than many may realize. However, if you set up a plan and stick to it the process can be quite rewarding! Some things you will need to do: 1) Find out what you want to do. You don't need to be really specific, but have some general idea. (e.g. I want a counseling psych PhD program and have some interests in vocational psych). 2) Find programs that meet your needs in regards to training, research interests, geography, etc. 3) Find out what each program requires for admission. 4) Devise a plan to have those materials in well before the application deadline.
The GRE Every grad program will want you to take the GRE. Now that its done on computer you can take it whenever you would like. However it is a good idea to set the appointment several months in advance to give you a deadline to be prepared by and take it early enough in the year that you can take it a second time well before the application deadline. Once September hits, spots fill up fast!! And if you wait to take it until mid-November and you need to take it again you may not be able to fit it in by the January or December deadlines. You can take the GRE more than once, but test dates must be 30 - days apart.
