Graduate Course Numbers: Prerequisite First Year Second Year Third Year Doctoral Dissertation Clinical/Counseling Psychology (M.A.) Department of Psychology Maxwell Becton College of Arts and Sciences College at Florham The program prepares its graduates to have a significant impact on the mental health field as counselors, program directors, researchers, grant writers and policy makers on the local, state and national levels. With those goals in mind, the curriculum focuses on a broad spectrum of issues including the antecedent conditions that predispose people to psychological disorders, the nature and treatment of those disorders, crisis intervention strategies and the influence of various family and group dynamics, gender differences, cultural diversity, social problems and age on the emergence of various symptoms. Students will be trained to conduct intake and assessment interviews and to utilize the appropriate diagnostic categories. Students also will acquire a knowledge of research and evaluation techniques and the ethical and pragmatic concerns (e.g., managed care and budget constraints) facing the mental health field today. Since many of the program's graduates are expected to become administrators, they will be instructed in the techniques of supervision. The electives include Gerontology, Counseling in the Criminal Justice System, Counseling for Sexual Issues, Trauma Response and a concentration in alcohol and drug abuse. In order to apply what they have learned in the classroom, students will be placed in practica and internships arranged by the program's field director and supervised both “on site” and on campus by licensed personnel. All of the full-time faculty teaching in the program are licensed either as psychologists or as professional counselors.

This has provided a valuable opportunity for collaboration and cooperation between faculty and students in these two closely related subdisciplines of psychology. In addition, the State of Illinois now recognizes a license for master's degree level mental health professionals, the Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). In light of the new LCPC requirements and to facilitate even more fruitful cooperation, we have joined forces as one combined faculty, working together as a Clinical-Counseling Area, with the goal of developing a new Clinical-Counseling Sequence which combines the best we have to offer from both Clinical and Counseling Psychology while helping our students prepare for LCPC eligibility. Current Status of the Merged Area This year (2001-2002) will be our second year as a Clinical-Counseling sequence. Our initial class has moved into their second year of coursework and practicum experience. Those students admitted for FALL 2001 will be the second group of students enrolled in the combined curriculum working toward a MA/MS degree in Psychology, Clinical-Counseling sequence. The Clinical-Counseling Coordinating Committee will be proposing a new program a MA/MS in Clinical-Counseling Psychology but this will be some time in realization. Present plans are to continue to admit a third group of applicants in the SPRING of 2002 to begin in the FALL 2002 with a target goal of 15-16 students. The Clinical-Counseling sequence will continue to offer training in the traditional areas and methods of clinical and counseling psychology. The sequence curriculum has been planned to be in accord with the requirements of the LCPC eligibility cirteria.

    1. What are the minimum eligibility requirements for admission to the program, such as GRE scores and grades? The committee reviews all elements of the application. We recommend that applicants use the essay to explain anything that they feel does not adequately reflect their potential to succeed in the program. Also, note that prior work experience in human services is highly valued for applicants to the Standard Curriculum.

    2. Can I work while in the program? Yes. Many of our students work while in the program, but we discourage full-time matriculation with a full-time job. The most optimal job is one with flexibility - especially when one is engaged in clinical fieldwork. Remember, fieldwork training requires solid blocks of daytime and/or evening hours, so a job must be able to accommodate that commitment.

Dr. Linda L. Morrison COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to expose you to a variety of contrasting theoretical models underlying both individual and group practice in clinical and counseling psychology. Additionally, research supporting the various theoretical models will be examined. A second objective of this course is to expose you to ethical and professional issues in counseling and psychotherapy and assist you in developing a position on some of these issues. Finally, portions of this course will be experiential in naturethat is you will learn by doing. PREREQUISITES: Introductory Psychology and Junior or Senior standing are the stated prerequisites for this course. It is also desirable for students to have had Personality Theories before they take this course, although for this year that prerequisite will not be enforced. TEXTS: The two books listed below are required reading for all students in this course. These two books should be shrink-wrapped together and available at the bookstore. I am appalled at the price- but it is twelve dollars cheaper for you since I had them shrink-wrapped. Lectures and discussions will assume that you have done the assigned readings prior to class. I reserve the right to assign you readings outside of the texts and these will be available either through class or on reserve in the library.

It is designed for the student who is interested in working with individuals, families and groups in a clinical setting. In addition, this degree meets the educational requirements for the California Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license This innovative program emphasizes clinical counseling theory and practice, along with an integration of transpersonal and somatic psychology. The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology with a Specialization in Somatic Psychology brings the body, body processes and body experience into the foreground of psychotherapeutic inquiry and clinical training. The course of study focuses on the dynamic integrity and unity of psychological and somatic processes. From a somatic psychology perspective, life experiences are embodied experiences; breath flow, movement habits, musculature tone, cognitive style, affective expression, and relational patterns are shaped by past and present experiences. Courses explore the body/mind/spirit connection and integrate somatic-oriented material with contemporary psychological and developmental theories and practices. The goal is for Somatic Psychology students to graduate with the skills, training and experience necessary to become competent somatic psychotherapists, and to bring this innovative and important perspective to the profession of psychotherapy.

    Department Description
Psychology is the science of behavior and thought processes.
Although psychology is a broad field, many people think of psychologists only as psychotherapists working with clients. In fact, these clinical or counseling psychologist, who specialize in understanding and treating psychological disorders, represent only one facet of the field: Developmental psychologists study children and changes in people through the life cycle; cognitive psychologists examine how people generate, organize, and use thoughts; social psychologists look at the way people interact with and influence each other; physiological psychologists study biological influences on behavior; and health psychologists examine the many ways behavior influences physical well-being. These are just a few examples of the many areas of specialization available to psychologists.
    The Curriculum
The psychology major at Santa Clara provides students with a broad background for understanding behavior through exposure to many of the subfields within the discipline of psychology. Psychology majors take classes in the natural science side of psychology, such as physiological psychology, cognitive psychology, perception, and learning and motivation; and they also study the social science half of the discipline, which encompasses developmental, social, abnormal and clinical psychology, and personality.

D. , COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK GRADUATE STUDENTS On November 17th, a panel of nine graduate students from clinical psychology programs at Temple, Penn, Hahnemann; Schools of Social Work S at Bryn Mawr and Penn; a Psy. D. program at Widener; and a Counseling Psychology program from the University of Nebraska, met with undergraduates. The panelists explained the differences between the various types of degrees available in the mental health field, and covered such topics as preparing for graduate school, the application process, acquiring internships, and the types of jobs that one can get upon completion of the programs.
For undergraduates interested clinical psychology, you should be thinking in terms of a five to six year commitment to graduate study, i.e. four years for coursework and dissertation requirements and a one year internship. Panelists strongly recommended Sayette, M., Mayne, T. and Norcross, J.
