German pianist aims for next rung on ladder of success
What: A Piano and Friends recital by pianist Markus Pawlik.
When: tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Where: Tucson Convention Center Leo Rich Theatre, 260 S. Church Ave.
Admission: $10 general, $4 for full-time students.
Markus Pawlik will perform tomorrow at the Leo Rich Theatre.
By Ken Keuffel Jr.
The Arizona Daily Star You've probably never heard of Markus Pawlik. But he's doing his best to change that - and against unbelievable odds. The German pianist, who tomorrow performs at the Leo Rich Theatre, belongs to an ever-increasing pool of talented recitalists for whom just surviving in music is an accomplishment. At 31, Pawlik faces an all-too-typical challenge: how to sustain a career beyond the initial momentum supplied by a couple of big competition wins. It is a daunting task. ``What do you do?'' Pawlik said. ``You try to get as many supporters as possible. It's always up and down.'' Specifically, you (or your management) pester presenters, conductors - anyone with the clout to give you a chance. Maybe, an influential teacher might put a word in for you. Piano and Friends, designed expressly to expose young and emerging talent, routinely relies on recommendations of established pianists such as Russell Sherman, a New England Conservatory professor who taught at the University of Arizona in the 1960s.

Tian Ying
Poetry and heroics from a bold pianist
By ANDREW ADLER Jan. 31, 2002
The Courier-Journal If being a successful musician means plying the relationship business, then pianist Tian Ying is doing very well indeed. For the past couple of years, he has been a visiting guest artist at the University of Louisville School of Music, combining master classes and public performances covering considerable expressive territory. Last night Ying played the last of these recitals before a large and appreciative audience in Comstock Concert Hall. His program was unflinching: a first half devoted to works by Chopin, followed by a heroic confrontation with Liszt's Sonata in B Minor. Throughout the evening Ying displayed a temperament equal to the challenges at hand full of ideas, yet seldom full of himself. Ying concentrated on two of Chopin's freest works, the Polonaise-Fantasie in A-flat major, Op. 61; and the Fantasy in F Minor, Op. 49. Separating these was a pair of Nocturnes and four Mazurkas, Op. 67. Little about this arrangement was easy. Such is the life of a professional concertizer. A "fantasy" is not an excuse for a pianist to completely de-emphasize structure, and Ying managed to convey a significant sense of organization in music that can resist ordinary logic. Especially in Op. 61, which can be as confounding a piece as any in the Chopin canon, Ying pulled together disparate elements within an interpretation of undeniable weight.

Review: Mondavi's lively accoustics help the philharmonic outshine itself
By Patricia Beach Smith Bee Arts Critic
Pianist Tian Ying earned three curtain calls on Saturday.
Sacramento Philharmonic
Any skeptic who heard the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra's thrilling debut concert at the Mondavi Center on Saturday surely should be able to set aside doubts about the legitimacy of this ensemble. Those who still hold onto the counterproductive view that this is not a "real" orchestra were not at this sold-out concert in Davis or they simply want to live in the past. In an era of tough sales, talk of dwindling audiences and old habits, being able to hang up the "Sold out!" sign would have been reason enough for the orchestra and its management to crow before it even played a note. After Saturday's triumphant performances of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 powerfully played by pianist Tian Ying; the orchestra's winning version of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 2; and Darius Milhaud's charming "Le Boeuf sur le Toit" (the ox on the roof), there was sound evidence of the orchestra's professional and artistic mien. (That the orchestra only plays five concerts or so a year is sad, considering performances such as Saturday's are clearly possible, but financially out of reach.) Contributing to Saturday's success was a varied, listenable program, chosen and expertly conducted by the philharmonic's music director, Michael Morgan.

With its lively acoustics, Jackson Hall provided the orchestra with a royal chance to be heard properly. Maybe the orchestra has sounded this great all along. It is hard to know. The Community Center Theater is no friend of unamplified sound.
