I hope you all enjoyed the Chinese New Year party held at Wayne Township Fire Academic Conference Center on February 23, 2002. This event was sponsored by both IACA and FCC. A total of 490 people including 130 children participated to celebrate the year of the horse. One of the reasons you came to the party was the dinner. Numerous dishes of Chinese food were provided. Many of us piled food as high as small mountains. There was an urgent food shortage for a short period of time, fortunately, more food arrived before the entertainment started. Chinese folk songs and opera were performed. Many expressed that Chinese arts are unique and very enjoyable. The performers we invited were magnificent. Thank you for the comments.

Jazz Fest highlights
Cellar Buy a Key campaign
As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival asked people to share stories about magical moments they experienced at the festival. Some of those stories will appear on the festival's website, www.thefestival.bc.ca. A specific story doesn't come to mind from my many years of attending the folk fest, but I can recall miscellaneous fragments, such as the following: Experiencing the outrageous English poet Attila the Stockbroker and then interviewing him, along with his relatively proper mum, on a patch of grass at Jericho Beach Park; doing the early morning run to secure prime blanket space in front of the main stage; listening to Tuvan throat singing for the first time; seeing Celso Machado and musicians from different parts of the world take part in a wild percussion jam; and hearing countless Celtic bands create vigorous grooves. It's hard to predict which artists at the 25th folk festival, July 19-21, will provide transcendent moments. But here are some potential candidates:

Mike Zilber
As far as I know, no one has written a thorough history of jazz in Vancouver. It should be done not only to document the accomplishments of musicians who had a long-term impact on our scene, but also to note the contributions of many others who played here before moving elsewhere. I realized how my memory of the latter has faded while interviewing Mike Zilber. The Vancouver-born saxophonist was detailing his jazz journey of more than 20 years from here to Boston, New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area when I asked how he connected with Dave Liebman, the great but under appreciated sax player. A quote from the American appears on the back sleeve of Zilber’s third album, Two Coasts . Liebman called Zilber "one of the best-equipped musicians of his generation." It turns out that Zilber got a Canada Council grant to study with Liebman in the mid-’80s. They eventually played some gigs together and Liebman helped Zilber get his first record deal. I piped in that I saw his mentor perform at the Classical Joint in Gastown. Zilber said he played with Liebman at the Joint. Sure enough, I looked in my clippings file and found a review of the performance that I wrote for The Ubyssey in 1984. It said that Liebman was no "clone" of saxophone icon John Coltrane, and that Zilber was also trying to create a style outside of Coltrane’s shadow. "He is not quite there, but watch for his creative playing in the future," I wrote.

Clooney kicks out Beckham
MELBOURNE - Does actor George Clooney wield a more powerful marketing kick than footballer David Beckham? The Italian owners of the Police-brand designer sunglasses, De Rigo, apparently think so. They have booted out Beckham, 27, and taken on Clooney, 41, as their model, after the footballer - who has been the face of Police in Britain and Japan - demanded a huge fee rise. His spokesman claimed that the star - who earns millions advertising for brands like Vodafone, Brylcreem and Pepsi - simply had too many other commitments this year.

Spring concerts by Artist Diploma candidates
Free faculty concert: SFA faculty members (from left) Bayla Keyes, violin, Robert Merfeld, piano, and Michael Reynolds, cello, will present a free concert on Friday, February 18, at 8 p.m. at the Tsai Performance Center. The program will include Martinu's Duo for Violin and Cello, Brahms' Sonata in E minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 38, and Dvo˜rák's Piano Trio, Dumky, Op. 90. Artist Diploma candidates enjoy spotlight this spring By Eric McHenry When asked how many hours she spends practicing the violin each day, Catherine Wong replies, rather reticently, "Not that many." "Not that many" turns out to be about four, and those four turn out not to include time she spends rehearsing duets with pianist Ayako Yoda, chamber pieces with a quartet, and solo repertoire with her mentor, SFA Associate Professor Peter Zazofsky all things she does at least once a week. Still, Wong says, she sometimes feels as though she's cutting herself too much slack. "But the cellist in my quartet told me, ŒIt's not good to spend too many hours a day being self-critical.' And that's true. When you practice you're extremely critical of yourself. You're pointing out all your mistakes and trying to fix them. And if you're doing that six hours a day, you'll go crazy.

http://www.theobleckmann.com/biography.html
home upcoming performances reviews biography ... imprint Theo Bleckmann, a vocalist and composer performing in jazz, contemporary music and performance art who has recently been named a “local cult favorite” by the New Yorker, has toured throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. “A singer who's only recently fallen to earth” according to OUT Magazine, Bleckmann’s music has been associated with “humble elegance and technical brilliance. His intonation leaves no doubt and the diamond-sharp clarity of his three and a half octave-range undertakes great intervalic leaps, throwing in percussive phrases into semi dreamy harmonies" (FAZ).
Bleckmann's unique vocal and theatrical capabilities have inspired some of today's great composers such as Mark Dresser, John Hollenbeck, Phil Kline, Ben Monder, Meredith Monk, Kirk Nurock, Bob Ostertag, Randall Wong, David Lang, Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe, to create pieces especially for and with him.
Bleckmann has a long-standing track record of working closely with composer and performance artist Meredith Monk and her Vocal Ensemble since 1994 in numerous of her theater and concert works among them “Facing North” in duo with Ms. Monk, “The Politics of Quiet” (Bessie Award), “Magic Frequencies” and her most recent "mercy" in collaboration with installation artist Ann Hamilton, which can be heard on ECM. Bleckmann represented Ms. Monk in the first ever UNESCO concert in Beijing, China. Ms. Monk is currently working on her first commission for large orchestra featuring herself and Mr. Bleckmann, conducted by Michael Tilsom Thomas.
