Pianist XIE Ya-ou, born in southwestern China, began learning the piano in early childhood from her mother. Continuing her education she matriculated into the School of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Subsequently, she studied both piano with LI Mingqiang, LIN Eryao and conducting with HUANG Xiaotong in Shanghai. In Europe, Ms. Xie has studied with Wan-Ing Ong in Stuttgart, with Hans Leygraf Pascal Devoyon in Berlin and with Pierre-Laurent Aimard in Paris. Important stimuli in Ms. Xie's artistic development have been her participation in master classes given by prestigious musicians, as well as her study of New Music with Gunilde Cramer and Lieder classes with Axel Bauni and Wolfram Rieger. The diverse musical interests of XIE Ya-ou are revealed by her extensive familiarity with not only the classical repertory, but of twentieth-century music as well.
She won numerous prizes and was specially awarded for the compositions of Luciano Berio (Kranichsteiner Musikpreis of International Musikinstitut Darmstadt 1996)

Press Democrat Santa Rosa, California October 16, 2000 SR Symphony Opens Season in Style By Diane Peterson
Staff Writer
The Santa Rosa Symphony opened its season with a splash of color Saturday night, creating a soundscape even more vibrant than the new seats and carpet welcoming it back to the Burbank Center for the Arts.
Like the recently refurbished auditorium, the concert's thrust was decidedly modern, with a world premiere of Kenneth Frazelle's ``From the Air'' lending a touch of homespun Americana to the predominantly Slavic program of Chopin and Prokofiev. While contemporary works do not always sell many tickets, the auditorium was packed with patrons most of whom stayed through the second half to hear Prokofiev's powerful Symphony No. 5.
Not surprisingly, this hefty and challenging work was the highlight of the evening, tossed off with verve and not a little madness by the symphony under Music Director Jeffrey Kahane.
With his affinity for large, Slavic works a recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 performed last year by the symphony is due out in November Kahane is carving out an impressive niche at the headwaters of 20th-century innovation.
By commissioning new works such as ``From the Air,'' the Santa Rosa Symphony also is ensuring that classical music stays vital well into the 21st century.

Who Writes This Stuff, Anyway?
You see their names every day. You either love 'em or hate 'em. They've always got an opinion and on any given day they can be counted on to annoy at least a small percentage of readers. They're newspaper columnists and, tonight, we'll have a live panel discussion with three of them - the Star Tribune's Doug Grow, Laura Billings of the Pioneer Press and the Cook County News Herald's Adam Moe.
