THE ART OF INFLUENCE U.S. 1997 DIRECTOR: DEBORAH DICKSON PORTLAND PREMIERE SUPERSTAR: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ANDY WARHOL U.S. 1990 DIRECTOR: CHUCK WORKMAN
Chuck Workman's (THE SOURCE) film is a fascinating portrait of Andy Warhol, his art, films and the world he was part of and created. Weaving together varied, and often enigmatic, interviews with the artist shot over three decades, images of his art and films along with interviews and appearances with such observers and participants as Viva, Dennis Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, Gerald Malanga, David Hockney, Taylor Mead and many others in the Warhol "family," Workman takes no overt stand toward Warhol other than to confirm his place as a true visionary. The complex interaction between Warhol's personal, artistic and celebrity lives, and his profound impact on the culture of our time, emerge to further illuminate one of the most creative minds of the century. Naughty Marietta, operetta
"Considering the long-established popularity of Herbert's operetta, it is rather surprising that this is its first complete recording. The work is a veritable cornucopia of melody... Suzanne Woods is a total delight in the title role, dispatching the coloratura intricacies with ease and adjusting with ease to the spoken dialog... The diction of all is remarkably clear and intelligible, but Albany has thoughtfully supplied a complete English libretto, including the dialog..." -ARG DDD 2 CD Set ALB-432 $34.60

News of the Society
Letter from the President
Greetings! My, how two years have flown. How well I remember standing at the podium in Fort Worth shaking in my boots wondering how on earth I could ever follow Anne McLucas as President of this great Society. The time has come for me to pass on the gavel to Paul Wells, who, I am sure, will have an equally busy but rewarding two years. I have truly enjoyed the challenges and opportunities of the past couple of years. I wish to thank all of the committee chairs and members, the editors of the Bulletin and American Music, conference manager Jim Hines, and the Executive Directors Kitty Keller and Mariana Whitmer. Their hard work and dedicaton to the Society is astounding. Absolutely nothing could have been accomplished without you. You have made my job so much easier by your good will, your humor, support, and above all, your readiness to step in and do whatever is necessary, whenever necessary.
The Toronto Conference was a huge success. Many thanks to Kitty Keller, Mariana Whitmer, Kitty Preston and the Program Committee for their efforts. SAM was a major presence at the conference, one of the "Big Five" societies involved in every aspect of planning and producing this once-in-a-lifetime event. Our sessions were well attended and well received. It is awesome to think about our society, smaller in size than the others yet so powerful in its impact. Our presence at the conference was noted everywhere and we can be proud of our visible involvement in the dissemination of American music internationally.

Seattle Chamber Music Society Announces Fifth Annual Winter Interlude Mini-Festival
Three-Day Chamber Music Event at Benaroya Hall The Seattle Chamber Music Society presents its fifth annual winter mini-festival, Winter Interlude, January 10-12, 2003 at the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle ( click here for directions) . The three-day concert series includes three different chamber music concerts, and a family concert. The main concerts take place on Friday and Saturday, January 10th and 11th, at 8:00 PM, and on Sunday afternoon, January 12th, at 3:00 PM. Each will be preceded (at 7:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, 2:00 PM on Sunday) by a free recital. The Family Concert takes place on Saturday, January 11th, at 4:00 PM. It will be hosted by Classical KING FM's "Miss Marta", and will showcase faculty ensembles from the Music Center of the Northwest in a program created specially for kids. The family concert will be preceded by a musical instrument "petting zoo" at 3:00 PM in the lobby. Individual musicians of international stature form small ensembles (unique to these concerts) to perform standard chamber music repertoire as well as less familiar pieces. The 2003 Winter Interlude roster boasts 14 acclaimed artists, including many Seattle audience favorites from past Festival events. Among the musicians scheduled to participate are Festival regulars such as pianists Anton Nel, William Wolfram, and Adam Neiman; violinists Aloysia Friedmann, Ida Levin, and Scott Yoo; violist Toby Appel; bassoonist Arthur Grossman; clarinetist Frank Kowalsky; and cellists Toby Saks and Bion Tsang. Making their Seattle Chamber Music Society debuts are double bassist Jordan Anderson (a member of the Seattle Symphony); pianist Laura Vizzutti; and Allen Vizzutti, trumpet (a faculty member of the University of Washington's School of Music).

Artist Bio
The youngest of four, John Trones was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From an early age his parents encouraged the musical talents of John and his three sisters; Julie, Debbie, and Mary Beth. With Mary Beth at the piano, the siblings began performing at a variety of venues; coffee houses, churches, and special events, including the 1991 International Special Olympic Games.
Their tightly woven harmonies and melodic vocals gained them generous acclaim and they were soon dubbed, "The Trones Family Singers." "No," Trones emphasizes, "there were no lederhosen or performance costumes made from old draperies," referring to any comparisons to the Von Trapp Family Singers of The Sound Of Music fame.
Trones attended college in Santa Barbara where he initially studied psychology, but shifted his focus to theatre arts and graduated from the University of Minnesota. Combining his love of music and acting, he immersed himself in musical theatre, playing leads such as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , Curley in Oklahoma!
