Texas Tech Health Science Center President Dr. Smith. (A-J Photo / Brad Farris) Billed as a concert titled "Celebrate," the program also boasted an ongoing tale revolving around a despondent Tech mascot, a tuxedo-clad Raider Red. Happily for Raider Red, the finale found Tech Chancellor John Montford announcing from center stage that the initial $162 million of his $300 million Horizon Campaign for Tech already has been raised. Montford also pulled a few rabbits out of his figurative hat, making sure that the show - and financial figures - were heard in person by Texas Speaker of the House Pete Laney and former Texas governors Preston Smith, Dolph Briscoe, Mark White and Ann Richards. Co-hosts Ann Sanders Oliver and G.W. Bailey earned a plethora of laughs, though it was difficult to determine how much was scripted by Norman A. Bert and how many ad libs were hilariously tossed in by Bailey.

ERIC BOOTH
Music and More: The Artist, the Audience and the Skills of Art

Eric Booth has had four careerssometimes at the same time. As an actor, he performed in many plays on Broadway and around the country, played over 23 Shakespearean roles, made dozens of TV appearances and won acting awards on both coasts. As a businessman, he started a small company that in seven years became the largest of its kind in the U.S.. It made him a frequent public spokesperson on trends in America with a nationally syndicated radio program, and with regular appearances on CNN, NBC, and other major media. As a teacher, he has taught at Stanford University, NYU, has given workshops at over fifty different universities, museums and cultural organizations as well as leading workshops for teachers and students at every grade level from kindergarten through graduate school. He is now on the faculty of Juilliard, where he leads their arts-in-education program and directs the Morse Fellowship, and he works on the faculties of Lincoln Center Institute, The Kennedy Center, and Tanglewood. As an author, he has had four books published, the most recent, entitled The Everyday Work of Art, was a Book of the Month Club selection, has won awards, and has sold well across the country. He is a frequent speaker and consultant to arts organizations and schools across the country.
And on a personal note: he is a little eccentric. He takes wild adventure expeditions every year, like dogsledding in northern Alaska in midwinter, solo wildnerness camping in the Rockies, and horseback riding across Ireland; he is a former New York City Volunteer Police Officer, a published poet, a former marathon runner, and a fanatical gardener.

Etude: floating and then not (piano solo)
The composer writes: "Etude grew out of a conversation I had with a colleague. We were contemplating what it is about some pieces of music that makes them feel like they are floating on air, and what it is about some other pieces that makes them seem to be so close to the earth. Although there are many other elements at work, one important element seemed to be the nature of the rhythmic resolution. It is the treatment of rhythm that I chose to explore in this piece. The form is ABA, where each A section is mostly floating and the B section is mostly not."
Story Closet-divertimento for piano
The piece was written in 1986 in five movements: Opening Music, Tennis Racket/Unstrung, Wool Blazer/Circa 1978, Useless Gift, Costume Jewelry . The composer describes her piece as "short sketches of found memories, a light-hearted travelogue through fond childhood thoughts."

I began studying piano at the age of nine. My first year of lessons was from a country piano teacher in rural South Carolina - Mrs. Palmer. I was awarded for being the best student after my first year of lessons. Mrs. Palmer was a very kind southern belle who never raised her voice and was always sweet with her students. The harshest words from her mouth if I made a mistake were something along this line, "Cherry, I believe you played a little A instead of a little B." I loved playing the piano and by the end of my first year of lessons I was playing all the hymns in the Methodist and Baptist hymnals, and all the latest pop music. Mrs. Palmer taught me how to read music, not just memorize and perform a piece. State Solo Contest while in high school, performed as soloist with the Lubbock High School Orchestra performing Camille Saint-Seans' Carnival of the Animals , and won a music scholarship to Texas Tech University under Mrs. Catuogno's instruction.

dreams” he resurrected his youthful desire to become a concert pianist After twoyears studying piano under Dr. william westney, Browning Artistin-Residence
http://www.bibleandanthroposophy.com/Smith/main/disciple/introduction.html
Introduction
by Christopher Bamford It is a privilege to write a few words to introduce this pithy, far-reaching essay by Edward Reaugh Smith The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved focuses (with many fascinating asides) on the identity of the “beloved disciple”: the one “leaning on Jesus’ bosom, whom Jesus loved”—the one to whom Jesus “gave” His mother—not to mention the one who wrote the Fourth Gospel, the Apocalypse, and certain Letters that expound the Christian teaching of love more perfectly than any other human text. Ordinary Christians have always called this author “John,” which tradition has sometimes interpreted to mean “to whom is given” and which Smith tells us comes from a conflation of two Hebrew words “Yah” (or Yahweh) with “Anna,” meaning “grace.” In other words, John manifests and bears witness to God’s grace. Certainly no Christian texts have exerted a comparable initiatory influence. Indeed, whether or not it is justifiable to speak of a “Johannine” spiritual (esoteric) Church, in contrast to the Petrine or institutional (exoteric) Church, St. John has always stood for the heights of mystical theology: the deepest Christian initiation. His identity, therefore, is a matter of more than passing interest. This is one reason why, when asked by the New York Open Center and the Anthroposophical Society to contribute to a lecture series celebrating Christianity at the beginning of the new millennium, Ed Smith chose the theme of the identity of John: it would allow him to talk of Christian initiation in a new way, one whose time he felt had come. Another reason surely was that it allowed him to bring together a number of
