Walters Internationally acclaimed pianist plans performance at Hope College
It will be a full evening of Liszt when concert pianist Teresa Walters performs at 8 p.m., Monday, in Dimnent Memorial Chapel at Hope College. The public is invited. Admission is free. Walters has performed in almost all 50 states, and has toured in Australia, Japan and Hungary. She has also performed at New York's Carnegie Recital Hall, Wigmore Hall in London, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and several other prominent international locations. Her Hope performance will consist entirely of pieces by Franz Liszt, the Hungarian composer and pianist who lived from 1811 to 1886. Although known for his flamboyant lifestyle and performances, many of Liszt's works reflect his spiritual beliefs, which came to the forefront when he took minor orders in Rome in 1865. The evening will open with his "Harmonies Poetiques et Religieuses," which underwent a metamorphosis of almost 20 years. In its final form, the collection contains 10 musical meditations introduced by the "Invocation." The next movements are the "Pensee des morts" and the "Benediction."

Jim Jarrett portrays artist Vincent van Gogh, creator of the famed Starry Nights painting, and van Gogh's brother Theo in this critically acclaimed one-man show. Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame wrote and starred in the original production, which depicts van Gogh's brief and tortured career with pathos and humor. Teresa Walters

Pianist to play Liszt music
RACHEL DVORAK
Layout Assistant While speaking with pianist Teresa Walters, the next performer in the Artist Series, one can immediately sense how much she loves her career.
MUSIC FROM THE SOUL-Teresa Walters will play the piano in the next Artist Series performance Saturday at 8 p.m.
"'Playing the piano' is an appropriate term," Walters said. "It really is play. It doesn't feel like work." But for every second she performs, Walters has spent countless hours perfecting each phrase in the music of Franz Liszt. Liszt, a composer from the Romantic period, is known for his challenging and dramatic piano music. Walters said for her, it is a passionate display of poetry from the soul. "I'm still exploring the richness of his pieces," she said. "To me, his music has everything. It is beautifully designed for the hands." Walters said the journey of performing Liszt's music all over the world is the most fulfilling part of her career. Her music has taken her from a Nebraska farm, where she randomly played a song from the radio on her grandmother's piano at the age of four, to Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore to earn a doctorate, to touring Europe as the first American to play in recitals honoring Liszt's birthday. In her travels, Walters encounters "signs" and coincidences which convince her that playing the piano is her calling.
