CURB YOUR SUV
Laurie David is not your typical Think Globally, Act Locally sort of environmentalist. Her husband, Larry David, co- created Seinfeld , for one thing, and now stars in his own series, Curb Your Enthusiasm . And David herself travels in privileged Hollywood circles. But she flips their good fortune on its head, mining her connections to actors, producers and movie execs to advance populist environmental campaigns. She’s the engine behind the Detroit Project and its controversial anti-SUV ads, and without her, one Santa Monica dealership would not be leading the country in sales of Toyota’s gas/electric hybrid, the Prius. DEBORAH VANKIN tells us how David puts celebrity activism in the driver’s seat.
Plus, LARRY DAVID on the perils of being married to an environmentalist.

CD Review: Arcadi Volodos: Schubert: Solo Piano Works (Sony Classical) Buy it here In his prodigious career, Schubert came late - in terms of pieces previously written - to the sonata as a means of expression. By the time he reached his greatest heights as a composer, he had not only mastered the form but developed a complex and exquisitely lyrical vocabulary for it.
On this CD, Russian pianist Volodos opens with the composer's earliest effort, the Sonata in E major and outlines the evolution of Schubert's train of musical thought through, arguably, his finest, the Sonata in G major which was composed 11 years later.
The E major is a problematic work in many ways, not the least of which is the tentative manner in which Schubert explores the form. Themes and phrases lack finesse, yet they are endowed with the inate musicality that marks his finer works. Volodos plays with an ease and assurance throughout, capturing what Schubert was trying to say without emphasizing the labors it takes to get through it. Conversely, on the G major , both pianist and composer reach a sublime state of expression in which the music unfolds with an almost improvisational spontaniety and eloquence.

Dmitri Bashkirow

Volodos vanquishes Prokofiev's Second
BY JOSEPHINE YUN
The Johns Hopkins News-Letter Prokofiev's second piano concerto is more than just powerful. It can be a technical roadblock for many pianists. It requires iron stamina. And, as with any piece, it demands that the soloist be connected not only to the notes but to the nuances that lie within them. The Concerto in g minor holds tenderness, melancholy, fury and a quick humor. That said, Arcadi Volodos is its master. The second movement saw his fingers become incredibly flexible, flying through the non-stop sixteenth notes like miniature octopi on crack. He was all bit lip and concentration. At times, it seemed like the movement was an exercise, yet his control over the piece was unquestionable. The third movement deserved more phrasing and contrast; the orchestra could have been heavier, more robust. Mr. Volodos, again, took much care with his upward sweeps, grimacing; however, his return-trip glissandi were easily executed, his fingers supple and sure. The lower strings were exceptional in the last movement. Mr. Volodos continued to dazzle both technically and musically, looking as if he would burst the seams of his jacket or explode out of his chair. His background in voice and conducting could explain his lyricism and physical flair throughout the performance. Conductor James DePreist guided the orchestra effortlessly and with finesse, though they were not always together, particularly toward the ends of movements. The orchestra was clearly happy to perform the refreshing, enjoyable Prokofiev. It should be noted that despite all his pained expressions, Mr. Volodos never broke a sweat. The audience gave him a standing ovation.

Web Search On the Aisle INDEX Olli Mustonen: Mannerism Over Music By Philip Anson / January 12, 2001 On the Aisle Olli Mustonen, piano Solo Recital Carnegie Hall Jan. 12, 2001 The young Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen is one of the classical piano world's new brat pack who seem to be trying to redefine classical pianism through willful "derangement of the senses", to use a Rimbaudesque phrase. Listening to these technically impeccable performers, one wonders if their experimentation is motivated by boredom with the old or fascination with the new. Along with the provocative Croation Ivo Pogorelich and the flamboyant Russian Arcadi Volodos, Mustonen uses the score as a springboard for his own aleatory experiments with tempo, phrasing, and dynamics. I guess Glenn Gould is the father of this eccentric school of young rebels who wilfully alienate conservative listeners, while building a small but vociferous following among the cognoscenti. Pogorelich's slow tempos and weird silences turn his concerts into sessions of mental torture or sublime zen meditation, depending on your expectations. Volodos is the idiot savant of the Steinway, performing astounding digital acrobatics that verge on a circus act.
