Independence Jazz Reunion
Friday, October 12, 2001
Independence Jazz Reunion is a professional, six-piece jazz ensemble made up of prominent musicians and lifelong friends who play the spectrum of jazz: swing to Dixieland, classic jazz to mainstream. IJR began playing together over forty years ago as young men in high school and college, but disbanded in the early ‘60’s after their leader, Rick Lundquist, was drafted into the army. In 1997, they reunited, (four original members strong) cut a CD and began performing again. Their program blends jazz music with humour, satire and love - and is entertaining for people of all ages. The band has played at Carnegie Hall, Jimmy Ryan’s night club, the Village Gate in New York and has toured Europe. Individually, these professional jazz players have played with everyone from Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, and the Buddy Rich Band, to James Taylor, Dave Grusin, and Carly Simon. Even the briefest glance at the spring programme for Music at the University of Leicester reveals a rich variety of entertainment, from internationally acclaimed musicians to the infectious enthusiasm of student concerts. Global Variations (9 March) promises to be an occasion to remember, with an exuberant mix of the University’s Big Band, Wind Band, Umoja Gospel Choir, the Choral and Orchestral Societies and – unlikely as it sounds - the Modern Languages Choir, known and loved for its Christmas and summer concerts under the baton of the inimitable Robert Kenny. Martyn Hill returns to the University to take the part of the Evangelist in J S Bach’s St John Passion (16 February) and the University Sinfonia includes a premiere of Luke Ottevenger’s The Chant of Camus as well as Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto with pianist Ron Abramski (2 February). Wednesday Lunchtime Concerts include leader of the Lindsays Peter Cropper, and Leon Bosch, one of the foremost double bass players of our time, as well as musicians with a Leicester connection, The Courtenay String Quartet, and David Bretherton, pianist. Among the Richard Attenborough Centre Soundbites on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime, many are given by local musicians and display a variety of musical styles from classical to blues, jazz and folk.
