surfaces. Sunday evening The KW Chamber Music Society had a new to-Canadaimmigrant pianist, alexander tselyakov. Advance billing
    http://www.information.uwaterloo.ca/Gazette/1995/Gazette, September 20, 1995/Cec
UW Gazette, September 20, 1995 Conducted by Jan Narveson September 13: The Canadian Chamber Ensemble's first of five chamber music concerts was at WLU's Maureen Forrester Recital Hall, and we were delighted to see that the stage set-up remained as it had been for last May's winds concert - wood panels all around. The concert opened with a piece we hadn't known about last week: Elizabethan Concert Music, a suite arranged for modern brasses by a member of the American Brass Quintet. Our brass players are top-drawer, and were in their best form as well for the occasion. It was nice to see Daniel Warren back, and his performance on the piccolo trumpet in a couple of the pieces was breathtaking. This is a dandy selection, and the bright, clean playing of our quintet was just what this kind of music wanted. It's a bit raucous in the bright acoustic, but that's far better than the deadness of previous years. A lovely opener. Next came Bach's Cantata #82, "Ich habe genug", with Daniel Lichti, baritone. He has a gorgeous voice, and the main arias have one of Bach's fine obbligato parts, for oboe, with James Mason doing the honours in his usual superb fashion, and with good balance. This is a mighty serious work, mainly, and perhaps bordering on too much so, but with such beautiful vocalism as quite to make up for it. To balance that, there was Poulenc's "profane cantata", La Bal MasquŽ, in which Lichti's French was as effective as his German in the Bach. This is one of Poulenc's delightfully saucy pieces, and the catchy, intricate writing for a half- dozen instruments was brilliantly played, and very effectively directed by Chosei Komatsu. This piece, indeed, is a "find" - let's hope it stays in their repertoire. The program concluded with the Suite from Samuel Barber's Medea, originally a ballet and then an orchestral work. Set for twelve instruments in this form, we felt that the emotional intensity of the work got a bit overly much after awhile; it's just too long and too reminiscent of its orchestral forerunner for effective chamber music; again, though, the performance was simply superb. Sunday: The K-W Symphony's Serenade Series opened with Respighi's delightful suite, The Birds - beautifully played and shaped just so, and a little lacking in warmth. Guest artist Susan Hoeppner, flute, then joined the orchestra in Rodrigo's Concerto pastorale, which is a twenty-minute moto perpetuo. Undaunted, Ms. Hoeppner managed to get all those notes tossed off without ruffling a feather. The work also has a lovely slow movement with extensive solos for English horn, which were finely played by Faith Levene; the other two movements make extensive use of the oboe, in James Mason's capable hands. It's a very good concerto, but even if you can scare up a flutist who can actually play the thing, there's the question whether he or she will also be willing to devote the necessary energy. Fortunately, Ms. Hoeppner was, and she certainly has the virtuoso command necessary to bring it all off with fluency and vitality. Beethoven's Prometheus Overture isn't exactly top drawer Beethoven, but it is a good enough one to deserve the occasional airing, and Komatsu developed it very nicely. The next item, Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony, is a lot more than just a "good piece", though, and here we were very pleased with Komatsu's way with it. This work is brilliant and charming, but it is also full of pitfalls for the conductor, notably the temptation to make it all sound rather staid. Komatsu's choice of tempo, we thought, was excellent: he maintained that clear, regular beat needed to make the first movement sound "classical", and yet kept everything interesting and lifelike. Likewise the beautiful Larghetto, in which the KWS violins sounded very lovely - aided in this by the presence of Moshe Hammer in the leader's chair. The menuetto could perhaps have been a little more mock-grand, though admirably controlled. And the finale sizzled away effectively. Fine job on one of the unique pieces of our century. Rossini's Overture to the Barber of Seville brought things to a close, and while it seemed odd to end with an overture, it does end with a nice burst of good-humoured sound for exiting to a lovely Sunday afternoon. Full marks for this opening concert, then. Well, not quite: after the revolution effect in the WLU hall for the chamber series, how about getting back to the best acoustic setup for the Masterworks? Perhaps the missing sparkle in the Respighi, and slight lack of impact in parts of the Prokofiev, would all have been restored by a proper arrangement of the reflecting surfaces. Sunday evening: The K-W Chamber Music Society had a new- to-Canada immigrant pianist, Alexander Tselyakov. Advance billing ran to superlatives - "phenomenal", "superhuman!", "intoxicating!" - and so we, plus a goodly house on hand, were very curious to see how the man himself would do. Answer: we can report that the superlatives are right on track. This is one truly extraordinary pianist! Several of his selections were virtuoso powerhouses, and there are people who can play these - how they can do it is a question we ordinary folk simply give up on - but among technically fantastic pianists, Mr. Tselyakov stands out. Most super- virtuosity can execute a smoking run with steely brilliance, but Tselyakov makes it sound musical and warm while he's at it - amazing! The opening Haydn, Sonata No. 33 in D (not G) showed him to be both a thoughtful and very human interpreter of the classics, achieving a big, clear, but warm sound without making it sound outsized and from the wrong century. And he can play so softly that one can barely hear the notes, yet they all sound fully present and even. Magical. In Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit, the shimming waters of Ondine, the horror-struck desolation of Le Gibet, and the menacing pirouettes of Scarbo emerged with power and drama, as well as presenting us all with technical lessons on the highest plane. Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody - No. 13 rather than the warhorse No. 15 - had lots of gypsy swagger and a fistful of ultra-high-velocity runs to awe the aficionado, and S. Irving Glick's Nistar (Secret) came off as one of his very strongest pieces, a meditation on the Holocaust that we found deeply moving - many such efforts do not. Last on the regular program was the three movements set by Stravinsky himself from his famous ballet Petrouchka. To say that these are technically challenging is an absurd understatement, and Mr. Tselyakov performed miracles from start to finish in it. One could easily enough have believed that there was a full symphony orchestra at work in his statement of the main Shrovetide music, and his portrayal of the dance segments were so lifelike that one member of the audience, a sometime dancer, allowed that she had to grasp the sides of her chair to keep from joining the scene. This was simply overwhelming pianism, and we've never been more impressed. Three interesting encores from this generous artist put a nice seal on things: a simple, lovely Air by Scarlatti rendered with perfect grace; the Flight of the Bumblebee tracking in at less than 1 minute and leaving us all gaping; and a finely wrought Rachmaninoff Etude, limpid and wistful. He's a pianist of many talents, and it's a rare pleasure to encounter such an artist for the first time. We'll certainly look forward to more from Alexander Tselyakov - keep an eye out! Forthcoming: Thursday through Saturday: The K-W Symphony's Pops series opens with a concert of "favourite music" of Michael Burgess, star of a thousand or so performances of "Les Miser ables". Program is a mystery to us. Centre in the Square, Box office is 579 1570. Friday: The Lewin-Chang-Diaz Trio, from Boston, at the KWCMS Music Room. Pianist Michael Lewin, violinist Lynn Chang, and cellist AndrŽs Diaz, all acclaimed international- known soloists in their own right, proved also to be a wonderfully integrated and insightful team in their first appearance a year ago. Beethoven, Op. 1, #1 in Eb; Aaron Cop land, "Vtebsk - Study on a Jewish Theme", and Dvorak's beloved "Dumky" Trio are on othe program. Tickets $23; sr., $18; st., $15; Subscribers 'A+'. 886-1673 for information and reservations; advance tickets from UW. box office, Provident and WordsWorth bookstores in Waterloo, Music Plus in Kitchener. Tuesday, September 26: The noon-hour concert at WLU (Maureen Forrester Recital Hall, 12:00) features Lennart Ogren, baritone, and Lennart Rabes, piano, two outstanding Swedish artists, in Schumann's Dichterliebe, and presumably some other things. Wednesday, September 27: The Conrad Grebel College Noon Hour Concerts (12:30, CG Chapel, free) open with the Ardeleana Trio and the CG Chapel Choir, in a program of African and African-inspired music by Carol Ann Weaver. Also Wednesday, in the evening: at UW's Theatre of the Arts: What used to be called the "Baroque and Beyond Series" of the K-W Symphony is now the "Focus" series, and on this occasion the focus is on Vivaldi - and some other people, making it 100% baroque and beyond. Concertos for piccolo and bassoon, starring Thomas Kay and Cedric Coleman of the CCE, plus the delightful Alla rustica and another Sinfonia make up the Vivaldi component; bits by Torelli, Rameau, and Handel (Watermusic, Suite No. 3), and a newcomer, Grant ("Prelude and Fugue") round out what should be a dandy program. Tickets at the door - not the box office. There's a low price for students.

ENTERTAINMENT: From 'South Pacific' to offbeat sounds, the Saint John theatre lineup has it all

The Celtic harp duo of Ardyth and Jennifer will appear on Nov. 30 while Montreal Danse hits the stage of the Imperial Theatre in Saint John on Oct. 30. Both are part of the 24 acts lined up for the theatre in the upcoming season that runs from October, 2002, to May of next year. GRANT KERR
    Telegraph-Journal
For its 2002-03 season, the Imperial Theatre in Saint John is rolling out an array of programming that should appeal to fans of musicals, dance, a wide array of music and those with tastes that are a little more offbeat.
As has been the case with just about every season past, the Imperial is bringing in a big Broadway musical. This time it's Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific on Feb. 26 and 27. Some of the celebrated songwriting team's classics like I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair and Some Enchanted Evening are in this war-time romance.
Imperial Theatre general manager Peter Smith said programming the Professional Entertainment Series is a bit of a balancing act.
