What is Argerich?
Many people have asked me why the computer in my office is named "argerich" (full name argerich.colorado.edu). That's a long story that I won't get into here, but I will say that the name comes from the Argentine-born pianist Martha Argerich who is pictured above. Martha Argerich was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1941, and gave her first public performance at the age of 8 (some sources say 5). She studied in Europe with Friedrich Gulda, Nikita Magaloff, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, among others, and gave her debut recital in 1960 (a recording of this recital has recently been re-released by DG.) Some of my other favorite living pianists include Grigory Sokolov Helene Grimaud Radu Lupu , and Olli Mustonen. For sheer technical virtuosity no one can match the young Marc-Andre Hamelin . My most recent discovery is Eliso Virsaladze (thanks to BMG/Melodiya's Russian Piano School series). My favorite historical pianists change with time: right now, the list is headed by Sviatoslav Richter Emil Gilels , Arthur Rubenstein, Dinu Lipatti, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli , and Julius Katchen. Next year it will probably be different.

Ondine ODE1008-2 DDD 56:37
At least on disc, Perahia has moved through the piano repertoire methodically, starting with Schumann and Mozart. Lately, Bach has been on the menu; might a thorough overview of Chopin be next? Perahia has paid less attention to the Polish master than one might have expected. It is all the more surprising, then, to find him tackling works that intimidated even Artur Rubinstein, whose Chopin-playing was in a class of its own for many decades. These recordings were made in London in the early summer of 2001, and the engineering is superb. Sony tells us the names of the piano technicians, but not the name of the piano! The Hungarian pianist was recorded in January 2002 in Finland. Ondine's engineering strikes me as being relatively non-interventionist, which is in contrast to Sony's x-ray clarity. "New York Renaissance" is the title of the long-awaited exhibition also hosted at Palazzo Reale from March 21 until September 15, showing 95 pieces from the Whitney Museum of New York. The event was made possible through the generous cooperation of the famous New York museum, established in 1930 to promote modern art in America, and now undergoing major restoration. The masterpieces by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Georgia O'Keeffee, Edward Hopper, Jasper Jones, Rauschenberg and other artists will cross the Atlantic Ocean to bring one of the most significant chapter of American art history to Milan. Terry Gibbs Welcome to AAJ! New to Jazz? Building a Jazz Library History of Jazz ... Jazz Humor Concert Posters Column: Concert/Festival Review Lucerne Piano Festival
Lucerne, Switzerland Concert Hall, Cultural and Congress Center November 20-25, 2001 By David R. Adler There is nothing like hearing European classical music played on European soil. Yet jazz has become a strong presence in Europe as well, and it’s certainly an important element of Lucerne’s musical culture. The Musikhochschule Luzern (the city’s conservatory) has expanded its longstanding classical and church music faculties to include "Fakultät III," the jazz faculty, directed by bassist Hämi Hämmerli. My journalist colleagues and I toured the spanking-new facilities, observed a few ensemble classes, and scoped out the Jazzkantine, the school’s very own jazz club and hangout. Clearly, jazz’s representation at the piano festival is part of a larger phenomenon. Jazz artists, it should be noted, perform at the KKL during the off-season as well. Brad Mehldau was there in June, for instance; the Maria Schneider Orchestra will play there in December. Markus Willinger’s organ recital, perhaps the festival’s most striking and memorable highlight, included music by Bach, Staden, Bruhns, and Scheit, along with three improvised choral preludes and — most impressive of all — an improvised symphony "in the Romantic style." The sonic capabilities and sheer volume of the organ enabled the 34-year-old Willinger to simulate entire orchestral sections, and the room practically shook with his creative energy. This particular concert started at 11pm; by the time Willinger began the symphony it was past midnight, adding another magical dimension to the performance. Here was another, less expected link between classical and jazz music — not in terms of content but in terms of spirit and self-expression. Willinger gave us an exhilarating tour through an antediluvian yet incredibly vibrant and relevant discipline.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Piano Concerto No.11, K.413; No.12, K.414; No.13, K.415 Patrick Dechorgnat, piano / Henschel Quartet (EMI 7243 5 72525 2 2) Category : Classical - Chamber Personally, I've always felt that using a full orchestra for a Mozart piano concerto is a little of an overkill, and even overwhelms the listener, preventing him or her from discerning the more delicate and subtle details inherent in the works. By breaking away from this tradition, and by employing a quartet in place of the more unwieldy string orchestra, this disc breaks new ground in a very pleasant and welcome fashion. Apart from its novelty (which you hardly notice after a while), this disc excels in many other ways. The soloist, Patrick Dechorgnat, is as yet relatively unknown, but I reckon that if he can record the entire cycle of Mozart's piano concertos with the quality displayed in this disc, he will be a force to be reckoned with, threatening stalwarts such as Perahia and Bilson. Some pianists consider Mozart "easy", and their playing often descends into the perfunctory and mechanical. Dechorgnat's playing, however, exudes tremendous charm, freshness and beauty, like a breath of fresh air. Because he does not have to compete with an orchestra, the dialogue between soloist and the Henschel quartet is more like the partnership of equals rather than like a frustrated loner struggling to be heard against a sea of sound. The account of the 11 th piano concerto can scarcely be more luminous, and it is played with a rare kind of warm elegance. That is to say, the stylishness of the playing never becomes cool, the precision never becomes clinical. It is surprising how little you miss the orchestra in the light of Mozart's masterly adaptations of his piano concertos for the piano and string quartet. This is especially evident in the introduction of the 12
