Sherman's tone is at once informal and high-minded, which might limit the appeal of Piano Pieces to a particularly North American sensibility. Still, when I read it in the spring of 1996, I knew Piano Pieces would remain one of the most intellectually and creatively inspiring books that I would read on any subject. Sherman treats a range of issues related to performing the European piano literature by comparing it to, or locating it within, literary criticism, baseball, mythology, poetry, drama, aesthetic theory, art history, everyday life, personal experience, (American)consumer culture, and social history. In addition, Sherman's recollections of his own teacher, Eduard Steuermann, are touching and instructive. It is clear, too, that Sherman has learned as much from his students as he has imparted to them. Sherman has a searching, inquisitive mind that brings together disparate subjects and phenomena coherently and beautifully.

Rachmaninov at Locust Point, New Jersey, his summer home from 1922-23
Anecdotes
Rachmaninov was a notoriously stoic and quiet man who divulged little. The following anecdotes, stories, and quotes will hopefully give you a greater idea of his character.
In his own words...
" In my own compositions, no conscious effort has been made to be original, or Romantic or Nationalistic, or anything else. I write down on paper the music I hear within me, as naturally as possible...What I try to do, when writing down my music, is to make it say simply and directly that which is in my heart when I am composing. " " Music is enough for a lifetime; but a lifetime is never enough for music." " It goes without saying that technical proficiency should be the first accquistion of a student who would be a fine pianist." " Well, there's [Josef] Hofman...and then there's me. " -When asked about the most important pianists of the 20th century. " ...the performer must know how to approach it...because if it slips by, then the whole construction crumbles...and does not convey to the listener what must be conveyed. " -On the " culmination " (his term) of a performance " My hands, my precious hands "

Friends and an adopted son drive to the sea to carry out Jack Dodds' wish to have his ashes cast upon the waves. Along the way, in alternating first-person narratives, the living disclose predictable surprises and ponder the big questions what's it all about, anyway? While Swift deserves credit for trying to capture the day-to-day life of his lower-middle-class characters, the result is banal. The first-person voices are unconvincing, the competing narratives cumulatively unrevealing, and the pearls of wisdom paste. In this demotic novel, Swift grants his narrators the depth and complexity of characters in a television mini-series. Joseph Shea Blake
    Peter Ackroyd
    Alfred A. Knopf, $35
For all his inner fire and drama, William Blake lived a relatively uneventful life, and this turns out to be rather a blessing at a time when so many biographies (including Ackroyd's previous Dickens ) stifle the reader with superfluous facts. Ackroyd skillfully traces the larger outlines of Blake's life and underscores the consistency of his character: a more anxiety-ridden and self-destructive Blake than one expects, whose persistence in the face of adversity and misunderstanding comes to seem quietly heroic. Ackroyd treats Blake's visions and commerce with the spirit realm respectfully though he occasionally transposes them into a simpler, more psychological frame without shedding a great deal of light. Nor are his comments on the poetry especially helpful (he fares somewhat better with the art). His triumph, however, is his vivid evocation of working-class London "Human awful wonder of God," Blake's Jerusalem in all its chaotic, violent vitality. Against this background we see Blake as his contemporaries did: independent and puzzling and brilliant. A worthwhile book.

Talented pianist Genevieve Wong holds concerts at City Hall The following is issued on behalf of the Provisional Urban Council: Genevieve Wong, remarked as "gifted in the hand, soul and vision" by the renowned pianist Russell Sherman, will give a delightful piano recital at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre on January 8, 2000 (Saturday). She will serenade audience with famous pieces from celebrated composers, including two beautiful works by Mozart: the richly-varied "Rondo in A minor, K.511" and the lively "Sonata No.13 in B flat, K.333"; the imaginative "Faschingsschwank aus Wien, Op.26" by Schumann and the exquisite "Sonata No.3 in B minor, Op.58" by Chopin. The young talented pianist took her first piano lesson at the age of four. She was later admitted to the Junior Division of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where she began her studies with John Winther, the former Dean of Music of the Academy. She was a frequent prizewinner at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival competitions and the winner of the 1990 Kawai Competition and the Frances Schuman Award. She has also won the Minnie and David Schoenholtz Scholarship, the Paul Jocobs Memorial Scholarship, the Luba and George Goldberg Scholarship and the Bernard van Zuiden Scholarship and furthered her studies in the New England Conservatory and the Juilliard School, where she obtained her Bachelor and Masters degrees respectively.

He tells Steve Paulson why he took up the cello, and why it's important to play for pleasure, not profit.
