PETER SERKIN TO PERFORM ALL-BEETHOVEN SOLO RECITAL DUE TO PAMELA FRANK INJURY ON LA JOLLA CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY'S REVELLE SERIES WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2002

La Jolla, CA - Due to a recurring hand injury, violinist Pamela Frank has been forced to cancel her nationwide tour with pianist, Peter Serkin, including her upcoming concert on the La Jolla Chamber Music Society's Revelle Series on Wednesday, April 17. Mr. Serkin will instead, be featured in solo recital in a special All-Beethoven program. The performance will be at 8:00 p.m. at the Sherwood Auditorium of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, 700 Prospect Street, La Jolla.
Ms. Frank's injury has prevented her from performing consistently for the past 9 months. While it was her hope that she would be ready for the upcoming spring tour, the severity of the injury has left her with no choice but to cancel.
"We are disappointed that Ms. Frank has canceled," said La Jolla Chamber Music Society Executive Director Neale Perl. "But we wish her a speedy recovery and return to performing. We are thrilled to be able to present such an exciting alternate to the original duo recital. Serkin is a brilliant musician and it will be a privilege to hear him in a 500-seat hall!"

Curtis Symphony Orchestra
Robert Spano, conductor; Peter Serkin, piano; Sunday, Feb. 28, Academy of Music Pianist Peter Serkin
This invigorating program featuring Mozart, Barber, Stravinsky and Strauss was an ample demonstration that Mozart is the mother's milk for all who followed him. When Beethoven heard the 24th Piano Concerto, which was played by Peter Serkin on this evening, he was said to have despaired of ever writing music so eloquent and finely wrought. In Stravinsky's late Movements for Piano and Orchestra, the composer sounds tentative in his use of serialism, a style he employed only after the death of Arnold Schoenberg, his great ideological rival in the world of modern music. It is the Mozartean manipulation of woodwind sounds that cements this tentative dance with the serial method. Even amid the tumult and bombast of Strauss, in this case, "Also Sprach Zarathustra," there is a sense of color and timbral balance that the 20th-century German composer openly attributes to his adoration of Mozart. These were glorious performances by this astonishingly talented band of teenagers. Guest conductor Robert Spano, Curtis Class of 1985, produced exceptionally lucid and buoyant musicmaking. He consistently demanded, and received, alert and brightly voiced playing. Peter Serkin, Curtis Class of 1964, was the soloist in the Stravinsky and Mozart works. In the Stravinsky, Serkin deferred to the overall scope of the music, sounding like a member of a chamber group rather than a soloist. But in the Mozart, the piano became a protagonist in an opera, playing against the broad canvas of the orchestra with great emotional and dramatic subtlety. Serkin has known this music for most of his life, and yet, he still performs with the score before him as a reference, and in his playing, still seeks to explore the fine hues of this magnificent score.

Unassuming Serkin offers afternoon delight
By Andrew Lindemann Malone
Diamondback staff writer
Pianist Peter Serkin is a star (in the classical music world, anyway) who has none of the normal star attributes.
He doesn't dress like a star; when he came to the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center's Concert Hall Sunday afternoon, he wore spectacles and a three-piece suit which made him look more like an investment banker than a world-renowned ivory tinkler.
He doesn't have a star's ego; he seemed almost embarrassed when he and his all-star team of chamber musicians garnered thunderous applause for the performance of the final work on the program. And he doesn't play like a star; he never indulges in mere display for Peter's sake, instead serving the music and only the music.
In fact, it's probably the fact that Serkin is not a "star" that makes him so damn good, and it's certainly a large part of what made Sunday's performance, presented under the auspices of Maryland Presents, so enjoyable. The program opened with Serkin and a string quartet composed of Ida Kafavian and Jennifer Frautschi on violins, Steven Tenenbom on viola and Fred Sherry on cello a starry lineup indeed accompanying speaker Mary Nessinger in Schšnberg's setting of Lord Byron's "Ode to Napoleon."

BY MATT PEIKEN

A European tour, four world premieres and a performance and recording cycle of Beethoven symphonies highlight the Minnesota Orchestra's 2003-04 calendar. Osmo Vanska, beginning his reign as the orchestra's 10th music director, will lead the symphony to Austria, Germany, England, Scotland and his native Finland next February. Acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell is the guest soloist throughout the 13-day tour. Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg will help send the orchestra off in grand style by performing with the symphony Feb. 11 at Carnegie Hall. "Even if people in Orchestra Hall are hearing great playing, they want to know how we compare to other orchestras," Vanska says. "If we want to be well-known, we can't only do it from Minneapolis. If we're getting good reviews and good feedback outside Minnesota, it's some kind of guarantee for the quality. People back home can be more proud of the orchestra and, hopefully, we can win new friends to the orchestra." Along with Bell, who appears here the week before going on tour with the orchestra, other prominent guest soloists next season are cellist Steven Isserlis (Oct. 9-11), pianist Peter Serkin (Nov. 26 and 28), Salerno-Sonnenberg (Jan. 22-24, 2004) and percussionist Evelyn Glennie (April 15-17, 2004).

Two Estonians conduct Cincinnati Symphony
Two Estonians conduct Cincinnati Symphony
By Mary Ellyn Hutton
Post music writer
There are two Estonians conducting Cincinnati Symphony concerts this year. One, of course, is CSO music director Paavo Jarvi. The other is Eri Klas. One of Estonia's most distinguished musicians, Klas leads the CSO at 8 p.m. Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday at Music Hall. Guest artist is pianist Peter Serkin in Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1. Klas, who made his CSO debut in 1992, is not bringing Estonian music with him. "The concert already has two long pieces," he said. However, the other one, Richard Strauss' "Ein Heldenleben" ("A Hero's Life"), sounds a bit like Klas himself. A native of Tallinn who led the premiere of Bernstein's "West Side Story" in the Soviet Union in 1964, Klas, 63, is chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Symphony and Tampere (Finland) Philharmonic. He is principal guest conductor of the Finnish National Opera and music adviser of the Israel Sinfonietta.

Mastering a New Instrument: The Web

By NANCY BETH JACKSON
The Orion String Quartet (www .orionquartet.com), organized as an ensemble in 1987, was one of the first chamber groups to recognize what the Web could offer classical musicians. Its professionally designed site, started in 1997, provides news about performances and recordings and links to online vendors of four of its CD's. But the site does far more than sell music for the Orion, the quartet in residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. It builds an audience.
Visitors can send e-mail to each of the musicians, vote for their favorite pair of socks in the wild array worn by the violinist Todd Phillips and pick up chatty restaurant recommendations gathered between performances around the country.
''The way the world is now with so many great players out there, you want to be noticed in a new way,'' said Steven Tenenbom, the quartet's violist, adding that some people have discovered the Orion while browsing online for a Chinese restaurant.

A CONCERT FOR PIANO AND VIOLIN
Father/Daughter Duo Claude and Pamela Frank To Perform March 27 at SU
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Residents of the Susquehanna Valley have an unusual opportunity this month to hear one of the world's most distinguished musical families live in concert. The Stella Freeman Weis Cultural Endowment is bringing renowned pianist Claude Frank and his daughter, Pamela Frank, one of today's most brilliant young violinists, to the campus of Susquehanna University on Monday, March 27, at 8 p.m. The concert, which will be held in Weber Chapel Auditorium, will be presented free of charge as a gift to the community. Last month, a Miami Herald review described the father-daughter team as "perfect partners" who play with "infectious spirit" and drama. The New York Times recently noted that "their unanimity of purpose made for the lively interplay that is chamber music at its best." Leading one of the most distinguished careers of any pianist, Claude Frank has repeatedly appeared with the world's foremost orchestras, at major festivals and at its most prestigious universities since his debut with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in 1959. He is an internationally acclaimed interpreter of the piano literature of Beethoven, and has recorded a CD featuring 32 of the composer's sonatas.

A preview of the season's most promising musical moments
Oct. 15: Peter Serkin, Persons Auditorium, Marlboro College, Marlboro, Vt. 8 p.m. Understatement of the afternoon: pianist Peter Serkin has seen the Marlboro campus before. Indeed, the artist as a young man debuted at Marlboro College in 1959 when he was 12. Serkin returns frequently to the site of his introduction to the classical music world, and this year he brings his Bach scores with him.
While the evening's set has not yet been announced, Serkin has recently recorded Bach's Goldberg Variations, a set of 32 short pieces originally composed as exercises that have become the benchmark works for any pianist seeking to measure her interpretation of Bach against this century's great performers. These three acts are part of the "Young, Gifted and Atoning" second anniversary of the Million Man March. And say what you will about the other events going on during the afternoon one of the features will be a satellite broadcast of Minister Louis Farrakhan's keynote address in Washington the three acts listed here have made some amusing, funky and enduring hip-hop (respectively) in their years of rhymes, beats and funky grooves. Oct. 16: Steve Winwood, Paramount Theater, Springfield. 8 p.m.
